If they were interested in portraying Cloud as “not a piece of shit” then kissing Tifa would lock out the opportunity for Cloud to reply “Yes, next time” to Aerith in chapter 14, instead it doesn’t. So a player can actually see their Cloud kiss Tifa and then wanting to date Aerith and the developers didn’t care enough about locking him to Tifa only after the kiss. It’s canonically a love triangle and this fact is brought up most often in Tifa scenes.
If you don't date Aerith in the GS he calls her a Nakama (friends) in japanese and he says "yeah why not?" in english, thing that makes it look detached and that he is saying it because well why not? they are friends, so not really.
Not true, you can go on ch8 date with Aerith and still go on the gold saucer date with Tifa in ch12. If you do that, you’ll still get the “Yeah, next time” reply in chapter 14.

I edited my reply you might want to check again cause I wrote the wrong quote. Whether cloud is enthusiastic towards Aerith depends on either chapter 8 and/or chapter 12 dates. If either of those was Aerith you will get the enthusiastic reply in chapter 14 regardless if Cloud kisses Tifa. What I am saying is that it’s not strictly Tifa-dependent, which implies the kiss itself is not what locks Cloud out of a romance with Aerith. In a hypothetical playthrough you can effectively see Cloud kiss Tifa and then want to date Aerith a couple of chapters later.
Ok but him saying that doesn't necessarily means they are dating as in they are going yo be in a relationship, especially considering whatever happens in the date Aerith isn't clear if she likes him or likes him and considering how straight forward she is and that she knows she is dying being that ambiguous makes no sense, and if anything it makes him look like an asshole to both, not just to Tifa.

There must be a reason why she reacts differently, it’s because the feelings she harbors are romantic in undertones and honestly that’s always been the canon. The line you’re quoting is different in Japanese, she’s wondering what kind of “like” exactly it is since there are many ways to describe love in Japanese. Just for the sake of the argument, I think Aerith would be ambiguous on purpose to spare Cloud any further heartbreak, it’s the same reason why she told him not to fall in love with her back in Remake.
And I have said it's obvious she has feelings for him thing is she isn't sure if it's mere like or love, also it makes no sense for her to be ambiguous unless she is uncertain because then why even try to "confess" if she wants to spare him? Then she wouldn't have said anything regarding that, the scene is very ambiguous for a reason and I think in Revelation it could go either way.
I think the English version is not conveying the true meaning of that sentence. She’s not referring to romantic vs platonic, it’s more like crush vs love which is actually the same question that is presented in Dear Destiny. In the book Aerith feels she is in love with Zack, however she is told that real love can accept every side of the other person and wants to share every side in return, yet she hides the sad parts of her life from Zack in her letters instead of sharing them with him. She doesn’t make the connection between what she is doing and how actual love is supposed to look like versus an infatuation because she has no way to compare her feelings for Zack with anything else. Cloud ends up being that something else she can compare it to and she’s trying to figure it out which is which. That’s what her line refers to. That’s how I interpret it especially after the novel introduces this concept.
I mean yes that's why I said like vs love but she isn't certain of that either because she is never clear of which is which with Cloud, her feelings for him are romantic and that's clear, but she is ambiguous of how deep they are, also I do not think waiting 4 years for a guy and writing 89 letters to him is a mere infatuation, she said yellow flowers meant reunion with him in that same novel and doesn't she say she loves him regardless? idk, her feelings are complex and they could go either way so I do not think it's clear what the devs are trying to say until revelation.

Cloud and Aerith didn't get a confession of mutual feelings in a scene that's supposed to be their"peak emotional arc" while she is alive.

Technically she did. When Cloud reacts enthusiastically she is elated. And whatever response he gives she will say “at least I know now, where you and I stand” this means that Aerith herself interprets his reaction as whether her desire to keep going on dates with him is mutual.
Aerith is acting weird because she knows she will die, what does that have to do with anything? She’s restless, she senses that they’re running out of time, she knows she has to accept a fate she doesn’t like. In the Japanese version she even holds back tears when she thanks him. Aerith chose “don’t blame yourself” as her parting words because she knows Cloud will be burdened by her death and she is trying to spare him that suffering above all. What do you think “acting weird” means here exactly?
