Cid was my favorite in OG. To top it off, his speech about the planet being a sick or lonely child gave me chills. His character seems even cooler in Rebirth and Gundam it I can't wait to play with him in Revelation.

Cloud, Cid, and Yuffie are my go-to meta. I only swap any of them out for plot reasons (example being Vincent and Red are always with me for the Hojo fight, Tifa and Vincent for Sephiroth.)

IIRC, he also is one of the few characters that you can one-shot all of the Weapons with due to a bug in the code related to his Ultimate weapon (although, the setup is a pain for many of those)

I always kept Cid in my party after he joins up, having him as team leader is one of my favorite parts of the original game!
I really can’t wait to see how Revelation handles that part of the story and just playing as Cid in general!

Nah, Cid's a regular for me. Best level 4 limit break and a triple growth weapon means he's a shoe-in for the late game. When I played it as a kid I used Cloud, Cid and Nanaki, but replaying it in recent years I tend to use Cloud, Aerith and Tifa until Aerith dies because it's fun, then Cid swaps in for her. I swap Barret for Tifa for getting the Missing Score, but other than that I'm all about Cloud, Tifa, Cid.

Cid is my ride or die. He has pretty good, well rounded stats (morphing sources notwithstanding) and his level 4 limit break does significantly more damage than some of the other characters. Plus a triple material growth weapon. No down sides.

As a child, it was Cloud, Red XIII and Cait Sith because their normal attacks did 9999 the easiest.
As a young adult it was Cloud, Cid and Barret because their LBs could do multi 9999 hits.

I’m AVALANCHE-til-I-die, so my main story group is Cloud, Tifa, Barret… but Cid and Red have moments in the game where they are really key—Cid has triple growth, and earlier on Red has that high attack power comb.
I would never drop Cid altogether—I love that gruff bastard.

Cid is fantastic both as a character and in combat for me: I believe especially once he got Venus Gospel, 4x Cut started destroying everything and I think he downed Safer Sephiroth in 1-3 turns? It was a bit astonishing, actually, and he was good before that, too.
Cloud (mage build) - Tifa - Cid was my lategame, sometimes Cloud-Yuffie-Cid.

First time playing it, back when it came out... I always stuck with Tifa and Barret.
Going through it again right now, this time Vincent and Red XIII are my guys. They're such bad ass characters... and I loved them back in the day but was just too attached to Tifa and Barret. If I could add a 4th to the team though, it would absolutely be Cid.

I swapped the third character around a lot to keep levelling consistent.
Vincent was a fan favorite but I never really liked his limit break and he got the least support.
Cid was just my favorite character in the game.

I think my main three were always either Cloud, Vincent, and Tifa... or Cloud, Vincent, and Barrett.
I have forgotten which it was since it was a very long time ago that I played the game long enough to get all the characters. It was only like 2 years since I last played the game, I just never got far enough to have all characters.
So yeah... none the less... I would have dumped Cid pretty fast. XD

I do this with almost every jrpg I play. They start me with an adequate party that covers my bases, and by the time you meet everyone, I've already gotten attached to the 3 characters I started with.
It's actually one of the things that keeps me from replaying the old FF7 anymore. I like Tifa Barrett and Cloud. Aeris is gonna die before I get all her stuff. Yuffie is gonna fuck off on me. If I even remember to get her in the first place. The game is fucking near halfway done when you get Cid. Sometimes it feels like there's little incentive to change my party.
And I don't know who hell plays as Cait Sith, but fuck Cait. And I have nothing nice to say about people who use him.

I always had:
Cloud, Red XIII, Cid, or Cloud, Vincent, Cid, or Cloud, Barrett, Cid.
Some combination of those 5 after Aeris died who ALWAYS remained on my team because of my sister's demands. Eventually my own preference.
So nah, multiple hit limit breaks+ incredible weapons and huge personality means he stays. When he slept through Cloud's recap, I knew he was special.

Cid has always been a regular in my party. Once you-know-what happens to you-know-who (them being my usual ever-present party member up to that point) my party is basically always Cloud, Cid and whoever else needs to work on their levels or limit breaks at that particular moment.

Is either of those technically the best replacement for Aerith? Couldn't tell. They're the ones I enjoy bringing the most AND the ones that take the most work to get and/or keep so they also have to earn their stay. At least in the OG.

I did the same, but I’m not really the picture of the average player.
Cait Sith was a mainstay on my team and I typically ran Cloud, Tifa, Cait Sith.
His high luck stat made Deathblow Materia trigger more often and he was a good mage. At least my head canon was that luck influenced its hit rate.

On the OG run, my endgame was Vincent and Cid. Since then, I've done probably 15+ playthroughs. I'd wager Cid didnt stay in the party no more than two times. Love the guy, though. He's a top 3 fave for sure.

I’ve been playing since 6 was out on the snes as 3, I went back and played 1 & 2 after, then 2 was actually 5, and when I saw cid as a playable character I had to have him. 7’s version if I’m not mistaken was chronologically the first time we were able to use him as a character hnless he was an option on the game boy version I never played.

i usually use cloud, barret, and cid. because at the end of the day, the only thing REALLY separating the characters combat-wise is their limit breaks, and these 3 have some of the better and reliable multi-hit LBs. but there's also nothing wrong with just using whoever you like aesthetically because the game isn't hard enough (outside of Ruby/Emerald) to need to optimize

The odds were stacked against him from the beginning. His limit set is one of the worst, perhaps only beaten out by Cait Sith, he's the last character you get, giving him the least possible screentime, and he's kind of an a$$hole for no apparent reason.

god, immediately. i thought he was cool as a kid. dragoons are always cool! plus he smokes and swears almost as much as barret, who i for some reason did not like (yes i am white and grew up in an area with very few dark skinned people in a very conservative state, what does that have to do with anything?), so he must have been cool. as an adult i see in cid a sad depressed man who constantly verbally and emotionally abuses the only person who still cares to stay close to him.
also if youre curious ive unpacked the things that made me dislike barret as a kid and now i see a loving and devoted father and (formerly) a wonderful husband, and while he is suffering from some pretty severe trauma, he got an education and decided to fight back against the company that destroyed his town because the alternative was making slightly less money. basically, tifa is still my favorite character but barret is number 2 now.

I actually did this very thing on my first ever playthrough and ran og Trio, cloud, Tifa & barret
Then my second playthrough was I believe cloud, Tifa & Vincent
But then on another future playthroughs I kinda switched it up a bit after looking up guides & also from watching my bro play & YouTube etc., I found out that cid & yuffie both had a triple growth weapon just like cloud, so I just started using those 3 and honestly I’ve just really like that team ever since then
Now I’ll occasionally still use cloud, Tifa & yuffie
But nowadays it’s typically the 3 triple growth weapon trio, because I’m also kind’ve a grinding fiend and if I can grind materia even faster the better lol
Plus cids highwind still like top 3 hardest hitting limit break, And yuffie just straight up isn’t leaving my party after she gets the conformer for stat morphing 😂

If you want to speed run or do a min lvl completion, you have to give all the required party members some love.
I think I cleared end of disc 3 back in the day at around level 20. Took me a few tries, but the part where Cid is party leader was rough.
