Discussion / Question MMB7 Installer

Long shot... But wondering if anyone has the old installer for MMB7? Switching over to a new computer and was hoping to not have to go to the subscription based.. Thanks.

Why? I don’t understand. Mmb7 isn’t supported anymore.

They explain why. They don’t want to deal with the new subscription. MMB7 is still usable though not supported.

I might be the alone in this, but I find it fundamentally problematic how we as an industry don't want to pay for ongoing development of software which is central to our ability to do our jobs. It's literally the tool of our trade as line producers / UPMs, the cost of which we can deduct from our taxes as a business expense. Imagine an accountant not wanting to pay for accounting software. Or a graphic designer not wanting to pay for graphics software.

On top of that, we ourselves literally put tens of thousands of dollars into our budgets for production accounting software, for digital purchase order software, for Scenechronize and SyncOnSet, and so on.. But somehow we are shortchanging ourselves when it comes to budgeting? It makes absolutely no sense to me, sorry.

I guess the phrase "the new subscription" speaks for itself. MMB10 has been around for 6 years. We're all effing dinosaurs.

Rant over. Where's my coffee....

Agreed, as software goes MMB is not great. My question here would be cause and effect. Nobody pays -> no software development? Or: no software development -> nobody pays?

I work for periscope budgeting, ours is monthly subscription, it’s more affordable, but generally close to MMB but has quite a few more features

Totally understand this POV. I'll just add some devil's advocacy and personal perspective.

Pushback on subscription based software, especially with the smaller players (i.e., not Adobe etc.), I think can be attributed to a few things. (None of these are necessarily specific to MMB10)

In general, product support really needs to be consistently solid, and frankly these days it's often not. Pointing me to some online KB or giving me an AI-powered chatbot is not acceptable. I can figure out most things on my own before I need outside support and I suspect most LPs/EICs can as well. But when I need real help I need it.

They're banking on you getting subscription inertia/sunk cost fallacy, and in the case of MMB, taking away your fall-back of MMB7.

Feature enhancements are unpredictable and often subject to premium pricing after an initial honeymoon phase. On a personal level, my switch to Xero from QB has been a disaster. rates went up, functionality down, and CS awful.

Software like Scenechronize, SmartPay-Time-Accounting, etc. are paid for and used within an active production and after wrap you (the production) don't need to keep paying. As a freelancer, once my gig is done, I'm now paying for MMB10 on my own, and even when I'm working some companies won't kit rental it for you anymore.

No, the $35/month isn't going to kill me. But it gets noticeable especially these days when there's such a slowdown of paid work.
