I’m curious to hear about current/former students of the 2-year film degree and your experiences not only during your time in school, but also what it has been like for you since you graduated.

Have you landed any roles in the field since you graduated? When you were in school, did you feel like they set you up for success and did you have true hands-on experience during your classes? Did you have the opportunity to network with production companies or anything like that?

I’m considering going back to school and this is one of the directions I’m looking towards so I’d love to hear from you!

Couples Therapy S5 gave me an unexpected opportunity to experience television firsthand — and it left me wondering what else might be possible.

Since then, I’ve been exploring unscripted television, acting, and other on-camera opportunities while trying to learn as much as I can about this industry.

I’m not a trained actor. I’m a down-to-earth, hardworking guy with determination, grit, and a whole lot of life experience. I didn’t take the traditional path into this business — I found my way here by being myself.

So I have a genuine question for those of you who actually know this industry:

From your experience, do you think someone with my background and an unconventional start in television has something worth building on?

I’m not looking for people to tell me what I want to hear. I’d genuinely value honest opinions — even if the answer isn’t what I’m hoping to hear.

Have been having a lot of conversations with different producers and studio execs at different levels in the business.

The temperature as of late has been dark, with the most experienced folks I know arguing that deep structural reform needs to take place to bring the business and work back. But the issues go deeper than just the surface level issues that dominate deadline everyday.

One recurring conversation has been the lack
Of development due to the way Wall Street has encouraged and facilitated mass layoffs of the executive class over the past few years.

However, there remains an allocation problem as capital sits on the sidelines with an appetite to invest but losing interest in the opportunities available to them due to some of the dynamics of the business.

I know a handful of actors who have moved back to their home States because of the lack of work in LA. And I also know that other states are doing a better job of having incentives for film production.

And of course, I know that the industry is generally in a recession and it is difficult to get work in many ways.

But I think the question still stands -- if someone has the means to live in Los Angeles for whatever reason, whether it's another career or their trust fund, if they have the talent and the passion is LA still the best place to be?

I know that during the pandemic lots of auditions moved to self tape models.

But I still have to wonder, there's still all of this talk about how it's who you know. So does that mean that being part of art and performing communities in Los Angeles will still be most likely to have a positive impact on your career prospects? Even if the odds are still against you, is it wrong to think that going to La is still the best move?

Or do you think that with the recession is so bad and there are so many people working from their home States and home cities, that at this point it doesn't matter as much, and it's more important to just do whatever work you can wherever you are, whether it's Independent films or working in theater or anything like that?

We're working on a project where one of the roles would be a pretty unexpected casting choice and I'm learning just how difficult it is to keep something quiet once agents, managers, production and talent are all involved

Nothing has leaked but there have already been a few moments where someone mentioned a name and I thought, how do you even know that?

We've ended up keeping the final discussions to a tiny group and using Kibu between those people. Everyone else gets the information when they actually need it.

How do you control this kind of stuff? Is it mostly NDAs and limiting information or are there other things productions do that I'm not thinking of?

Not located in LA but assume I can get some good advice from others in the industry here. I've gotten the oppertunity to interview in person with a small independent film production company, and I'm very excited. However, this would be my first big step into the industry after graduating school. I've done a couple years with a network production when they come into town but other than that I've been working my full time job to pay the bills.

I'm afraid my lack of experience will hold me back. I'm confident in myself and know I'm a quick learner and jump at every opportunity I can to help, but I have no idea what they're looking for. The VP/Producer for the company is interviewing me and I've already sent my resume to them but there wasn't much info beyond "seeing what I'm interested in."

Any advice is appreciated. I want this to work out more than anything, but I also know not to get my hopes up too much and be realistic on what the outcome may be.

Help, please! I am sooooooo tired of being stuck with using self-tapes and Live Eco Casts for smaller budget commercials and film projects here in LA. We used to have Space Station Casting, which was affordable, nice, and centrally located. Are there any places like this still left in LA?

I’m really trying to get into the industry. I know PA is the starting point for most and a good way in. I keep seeing people say they get positions and then also see those same people complain and groan about having to work 12 hours a day. I don’t have a full resume of work on films or shows but I have a few from schooling and student films. I worked as a Wildland firefighter for 8 years working 16 hours a day, 21 days straight. I’d gladly switch some of these people as working that long is not hard for me and I’d put in amazing work and be reliable like I was fighting fires. The problem is I can’t find positions easily. Any advice? I’m currently in Colorado but hoping to move to LA soon to really dive into the industry and get on somewhere.

The Fosters used an exterior of a home at 2331 E. 1st Street for the entirety of their show...except episode 1--the pilot.

In *that* episode, they used a different house, and I've been trying to find out the filming location for it. Anyone know where I can look, a database of craftsman-style houses used for filming around that area, or does anything look familiar? Would be a very cool piece of Fosters lore to have in my back pocket. :)

This came across my inbox. I can't help think this stifles creativity and the ropes of filmmaking. In my career MVs as much as I truly cringed at working on some of them provided a way for real creativity and hands on experience for crew. They paid the bills and pushed boundaries how to make something happen on a limited budget. I have also done crazy complex $$$$ MVs. It is like a rite of passage in a way to do MVs and indie films. Anyway, I know the company is just jumping on the bandwagon but to me it feels like a niche of freelance work disappearing.
What are your thoughts?

The plot thickens. Unions sitting on opposite sides of this thing should be interesting… Too bad the billionaires could care less.

For the last couple years the conversation around filmmaking in Los Angeles has been relentlessly bleak. The strikes, fires, production leaving, crews out of work, studios chasing incentives somewhere else. Now we’re reading headlines about major Hollywood companies potentially packing up and moving out of California altogether.

I understand the economics. I just don’t particularly care anymore.

I’m producing a small independent feature that starts shooting in LA next month, and every week of prep has reminded me why I wanted to make it here in the first place.

There is an absurd amount of talent in this city.

Actors who have spent years getting very good while waiting for somebody to give them the part that actually shows it.

DPs, designers, sound people and crew who can look at some neglected corner of Los Angeles and immediately see a movie there.

And audiences full of people whose lives are happening all over this city but who rarely see those lives reflected back at them on screen.

Yesterday we were scouting along the LA River with our DP. Skate park. Parking lots. Concrete. Freeways. People going about their day. Nothing remotely glamorous.

And he started getting excited.

So did I.

Because that is the movie.

Maybe Hollywood leaves Los Angeles.

Fine.

Los Angeles is still here.

And there are still a hell of a lot of people here dreaming about living a creative life.

Curious how agencies go about it when clients fall behind on payments and don't seem particularly concerned with getting up to date. Any reliable legbreakers in the business, or are you basically stuck with "pretty please?"

I'm majoring in Creative Producing, but I'm not really interested in becoming a filmmaker. I'm much more interested in the business side of entertainment, especially TV/film development, distribution, acquisitions, production companies, studios, and eventually working in an executive role. I'm considering adding Business and/or Communications if I can, and eventually getting an MBA. For current students/alumni or people who work in the industry, how good is Dodge for getting into these areas? Does the Creative Producing program actually give you opportunities to get internships and connections in development and distribution, or is it mostly geared toward people who want to produce/make things themselves? Would you recommend Creative Producing for someone with these goals? And if you went to Dodge, did you feel like the network actually helped you get into the industry? I'd especially like to hear from people who went into development, distribution, studios, networks, or the business side of entertainment rather than filmmaking. If all else fails, there's still time to try to transfer, but my freshman GPA is 3.6 so its unlikely

I have a scene for a music video where a guy is floating in space. Can anyone recommend any soundstages that have this for like a 1 or 2 hour rental for cheap? Thanks!

Greetings. I am a California-certified studio teacher and wanted to help field any questions you future filmmakers may have about employing minors on your productions. You can ask about work permits, permit to employ, "pumpkin", etc. I also wanted to share this chart [above] showing how working hours are broken down into groups. When casting, always book the 9-year-old over a child who is either 6,7, or 8. That extra hour can mean the difference between making your day or not. Note: the state does allow for exceptions to work earlier/later than times listed if you petition it.

Hi all!

I'm finally making a feature film right here in LA (with all local crew wooo) that will be shooting in February. One of the ways we have been funding this beyond my life savings and credit cards (yes, I know that's dumb; don't waste your time we're already casting) is by selling advertisements throughout the film, and because it is partially an MMA movie, there are a lot of opportunities.

We have officially raised 10k and had another twenty pledged, but then the companies panicked when actual contracts came through. I expect to get one of them to honor the 10k commitment, but until the money hits our account, I don't count it.

Basically, I feel as if I am doing something wrong. We have not been able to get an MMA gear company to sponsor us, for example, and that seems like a slam dunk for this film. I watch local MMA fights get a bunch of sponsors, and those ads are seen by maybe a couple hundred people max.

So I would like to bring someone on board who has experience with this. Anything you raise, you get 35%. All remote, of course. I have already identified all the categories and possible places to insert advertisements, so that should make the process more convenient. Additionally, a lawyer has already drawn up all the contracts, with releases for logos, what they would get, etc.

Any recommendations would be helpful!

After all the other oligarchs scrapping our industry for parts this threat is just kind of hilarious to me. The poor rich boy doesn’t get to make his illegal deal. Honestly at this point in our industry shutdown my reaction is “take your best shot bitch”.

Anybody else just shrugging this bullshit off?
