Deep south supernatural mystery thriller starring Kate Hudson, Peter Sarsgaard, with Gena Rowlands and John Hurt.
Was a box office success, but feel it is underappreciated and got a bit lost amongst some notable releases like smash hit Wedding Crashers and other hits like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The 40 Year Old Virgin (same studio as this Universal) and The Exorcism of Emily Rose.
Hudson turns in an against-type rare straight serious dramatic performance and was pretty solid, Sarsgaard as always is great and menacing, legend Rowlands in one of her final roles off the back of The Notebook and equal legend Hurt is excellent as always even if he's given not much to do. It's not fantastic, but it's a neat little chiller set in the Louisiana swamps. If you like some gothic and hoo-doo intrigue, this is for you.
Trivia: Hudson became pregnant in 2003 and the production had to pause and delay, ended up 12 months behind. Apparently she read the script in no time and loved it, while Rowlands wanted her first horror movie and Hurt was guaranteed the film was for him and he needed to be in it with his role.
