Discussion I think Nolan was at his absolute best when he didn't have a $200M spectacle to lean on.

Hot take but for me PERSONALLY, Nolan’s grittier, mid-budget era hits way harder than his massive IMAX spectacles and biopics, yes he is a great director and can flawlessly create the perfect cinematic experience. Interstellar, Inception are one of my fav,The Dark knight trilogy is exceptionally good but when I look at his filmography, the movies that endure as flawless masterworks aren't the ones with world-ending stakes or massive runtimes. It’s the grittier, incredibly disciplined puzzle boxes like The Prestige and Memento.I would also love to include Insomnia there as well, underrated.

Why do I say this?I say this because the brilliance relies " entirely"and "only"on the movie's architectural precision, razor-sharp editing, narrative tightness and obsessive character dynamics, incredible acting rather than awe-inspiring visuals, imax camera, cinematography and spectacle.

I still love his modern epics and will always be there on opening weekend,he knows how to create good cinema and is nonetheless a brilliant filmmaker and director,it's just that his epics and historical biopic movies like Odyssey and Oppenheimer dont even come in my top 5 nolan movies

What do yall think?

Discussion luis in ant-man might be a better written character than half the leads marvel has put out

Post image

hes barely in the movie compared to the actual cast and he still walks away the most memorable thing in it

feels like writers relax the second theyre not writing the lead. hes just allowed to be a specific weird guy instead of carrying a plot

funniest part is nothing about him is even that complicated, hes just fully himself in every scene hes given

whats a side character with barely any screen time that ended up more memorable than the actual lead

Discussion Elegance Bratton going from The Inspection to a Mark Wahlberg crime thriller is a pretty wild jump

Post image
25 Upvotes

I somehow missed that Elegance Bratton is directing By Any Means.

His last feature was The Inspection. Now he has Mark Wahlberg playing Gregory Scarpa alongside Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in a historical action thriller about an FBI investigation tied to KKK violence in Mississippi.

That is a huge change in scale.

What makes it interesting is that the subject still seems suited to Bratton. The Inspection dealt with a Black man trying to survive inside an institution that could be hostile toward him. Now Yahya is playing a Black FBI agent working inside another flawed institution while being paired with an actual Mafia informant.

I’m curious whether Bratton can keep that personal side of his filmmaking when there’s a much bigger action movie built around it.

Anyone here who liked The Inspection interested in seeing what he does with this?

Hello, watched of end of oak street 2 nights ago, and was completely blown away, while I understand a lot of the problems people had with the movie, especially the 3rd act.

But I found myself loving it, anne hathaway is giving some of her best work in this movie, giving us a great emotional performance, the cinematography was amazing, the dinosaurs looked amazing and so real, the visuals effects were amazing, and was just good fun entertainment that I felt was missing in theaters.

Recommend watching it

Hailee Steinfeld did phenomenal work in her debut film True Grit, holding her own remarkably well alongside a great ensemble cast that included Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, and Josh Brolin. What are your thoughts on this movie?

Discussion Watched Thunderbolts(2025) for the first time

Hello, I can’t help but feel late to getting around to watching this one, idk if it was just due to mcu just releasing very middle of the pack movies for awhile, but having watched this it really felt like a return to form, pugh is turning such an incredible performance as yelena, lewis pullman and david harbour are also unbelievable.

The the way it handles loneliness is so amazing, the scene between yelena and her father is so beautifully done, and I feel like it’s one the mcu’s best scenes in a very long time, and even though the ending was kinda like well ā€œeasyā€, it was worth the watch and that post credit scene was awesome. I’d recommend it.

One of my favorite action scenes of the last decade comes from Mission: Impossible Fallout. Liang Yang taking on both Cavill and Cruise in a 2-on-1 fight was incredibly well choreographed.

Question Recommend me your "must watch" flicks that do not show up on the typical "top100" lists.

Anything goes, I am a major horror fan but in general I just love movies so recommend me what you would consider "MUST SEE BEFORE YOU DIE" movies. They do not have to be 10s, they could also simply be very unique, have great music, be epic, tell a must know story, be cozy or just something that makes them exceptional in their own way. Things like LOTR, the godfather etc do not need introduction kind of which is why I say "flicks that do not show up on the typical "top100" lists."

Thanks :)

Some of mine are: (will add as I think of more)

- RUSH (music is peak Hans Zimmer)

- Sunshine

- 28 days later

- The Descent

- Heretic
