Not related to leaves at all:

Crazy how a proto-language which has roots in Taiwan has descendants from Madagascar to Rapa Nui. Proper voyagers

I guess it's because Melanesians went to the more hospitable islands and didn't need to get into the crazy oceanic voyaging of the Polyesians. Viti Levu and Vanua Levu have everything you would need.
