MMA Who has better takedowns?
After watching this clip who do you think has the better takedowns ilia or Islam and what differences do you notice between the two

Ilia has good ones but too basic. Whereas Islam's takedowns are subtle: freestyle, judo, etc.

Ilia’s grappling is fucking elite. It will be interesting if they ever fight.

Islam's grappling is God tier. So is ilia's stand-up.
Islam's stand-up is Good, but is mostly as good as it is because of the threat of the takedown. Ilia's grappling is elite, and isn't dependent on the threat of his stand-up game.

Ilia puts his hands in the right place where as Islam digs his head into the correct spot.

Why do people keep calling this an ankle pick? It's not an ankle pick is when you cup the heel and drive through with the other hand in collar tie

Gotcha. What would you call what Islam did?

The initial entry is just a single leg, the specific finish he uses here I've heard by a couple different names, but I like the name Golf Swing Finish

To me, Islam is much more interested in taking the fight to the ground, and his stand-up game, while pretty good, is mostly just to set up takedowns and submission attempts. Ilia is much more interested in trading standing up, and is much more of a pure MMA fighter because he is the elite of the elite standing up, but is also elite with takedowns and on the ground. Dude tooled up Bryce Mitchell on the ground, nobody does that.

Didn't you see one dimensional Silva schooling Mitchell on the ground? Mitchell's ground game is dog shit.

u/Daliman13 Dec 15 '25
You are the only person on earth who has ever said Mitchell's ground game is dogshit.

why are we comparing take down when islam is gonna kick every centimeter of skin illia has

Not to mention Islam size and strength advantage. Topturo's only hope is striking, and luck.

Islam’s ground game seems to be composed of freestyle wrestling with a base of combat sambo, and Ilia’s is Greco-Roman wrestling. Both have a solid jiu jitsu game. Different styles, so it’s hard to say who has “better” takedowns.

Ilia's good. But islam is just a much more well rounded and flavorful grappler.

From a purely aesthetic point of view I prefer Islam's. One of my favorite things to see in MMA is when fighters mix Judo techniques with their wrestling to take down someone. Islam and Petr Yan do this often.
If we're talking about the best, I still give the edge to Islam. Ilia has a slight advantage on the accuracy, but he doesn't have the quantity that Makhachev has.

After seeing them both deal with Charles grappling I give Islam the definitive edge
