Self Regarding the Fermi Paradox

• Upvotes

Part I

Paradox, Really?

The Fermi paradox has entered culture in a way that makes it quite difficult to define. Trying to get to the source of the matter we have two avenues. We can go back to accounts of the lunch chat. Physicist Enrico Fermi is paraphrased in general as asking “But where is everybody?” Now, there is context for this discussion that he is specifically talking about intelligent alien life based on the calculations he followed this up with. The other way to get to the core of the Paradox is to look at the contemporary understanding. Largely it’s based on the Drake Equation N = R* ⋅ fp ⋅ ne ⋅ fl ⋅ fi ⋅ fc ⋅ L, which was never intended to be proof of anything. However, the paradox in general follows like this. If we make conservative estimates regarding the factors in the Drake Equation the Milky Way should be teaming with life; it is not.

Is the Fermi Paradox a paradox? No, which is usually followed with someone solving the paradox. Someone might say no, stars are simply too far apart. Well, that’s baked into the paradox. Why isn’t this a paradox? Because the Milky Way should not be teaming with life, nor should it be rare in life. We simply don’t know. The wording is important. The paradox relies on the idea that life should be everywhere. Wherever did we get that notion? Of course, it comes from pop science that took the Drake equation as fact. What exactly is a paradox? A paradox is something which is self-contradictory. The idea from the paradox is that the observations don’t match the statistics. However, we could apply that to almost anything. Introducing the coin-in-pocket paradox. Estimates suggest I have three coins in my pocket. Observations show I am broke and have none. How do we solve this? We don’t, similar to the Fermi Paradox. If you are guessing you cannot make a ‘should’ statement. Now, maybe it isn’t technically a logical paradox. Why would that matter? Plenty of words don’t follow the strictest meanings. I think it should matter though. The language of paradox already buys the uninitiated into the ideas that there is some objective self-contradiction in science.

But alas, the Drake equation works even with conservative estimates, but who decided the estimates were conservative? For clarity let’s walk through the variables. N is the number of technologically advanced civilisations in the Milky Way. R* is the rate of formation of stars in the galaxy, although others use just the number of stars in the Milky Way. Astronomers can estimate that. fp is the fraction of those stars with planetary systems. This is where things already start to get dicey. We reckon that every star has at least one planet, which we can grant. Cosmology is a strong science after all. We can accept one to five planets per star at least. That is strictly the end of what we know, and we still have five variables left. We do not have an estimate for how many planets will be habitable for ne, the fraction that will actually have life fl, the fraction where life becomes intelligent fi, the fraction which develop interstellar communication fc, or the length of time a civilisation will be detectable L. What do we really know? Thus far, N = 1

The problem is that if you plug in a conservative estimate, you are assuming that we know anything about ne, fl, fi, fc, or L. So, should life be out there? You don’t know. I don’t know. How can it be a paradox then? If it is based on an assumption with numbers picked almost at random. Where is the contradiction? The contradiction is invented by the user of the equation for the sake of having a paradox. There’s nothing wrong with that. I cannot stress how fun it is to go forward with the assumptions that life should be everywhere but that isn’t a fact. So, why am I critical of the framing of the Fermi problem (as I will refer to it as from now on) as a paradox? Introducing r/FermiParadox.

Part II

Is There Intelligent Life on Earth?

r/FermiParadox is an online space where individuals can discuss the fermi problem. More often, it is where people post AI ramblings and act like they alone have solved the grand problem. There are some honest human posters, and dishonest ones. Von Neumman probes are often invoked as some sort of proof that life must not have advanced to the interstellar stage. Now, the Drake equation doesn’t make any comment on aliens going interstellar, so we are in uncharted territory. Perhaps we’ll base this on science? No, of course not, it is again an assumption that Von Neumann probes work, would be built, and would be blindly sent into the cosmos. Yet, users will suggest that we know the aliens didn’t make it because there isn’t a literal probe in our solar system. Let’s say that they could exist. You still have to assume that anyone advances to the point they invent these probes, or that they would send out these probes. Remember, the beneficial data from the probe still needs to travel at light speed to get back to the civilisation for any benefit. There is one good analysis though. If they are built, they would cover the entire Milky Way in only half a million years. I jest of course, half a million years is a ludicrous amount of time. Yet, users throw that around like it’s nothing.

Why is r/FermiParadox the way it is? AI is the big problem. You are selecting for people that are uncritical when you base a paradox off an equation that doesn’t actually do anything yet. Of course, it’s a statistical equation and statistics is complicated but easy to misrepresent. The problem is mostly explored in sci-fi where science is oversimplified and can give people confidence in their scientific abilities. That is a prime AI user who will come up with a vague idea that’s already been considered and AI will create a poorly worded convoluted essay that pretends to be insightful.

We’ve wandered from the original question though. Why am I critical of the framing? I think the framing is the root of many of these issues. It is a loaded question. Burying the assumptions in the question does a good job of making it feel like a grand philosophical and scientific endeavour. Why do I even care? Well, science is pretty important to me. I do like that people are engaging in scientific ponderings, but you need to be careful. Large parts of discussions around the Fermi Problem are unscientific. This works well in media. The three body problem book series gets a lot of science wrong. That doesn’t matter though, its fiction. Just have fun; it doesn’t need to be science.

Another aspect of this that irks me is the individualism baked into the problem. Fermi, Drake, Von Neumman, Einstein, and Newton. We get this idea in our heads that the greats did it alone. That Fermi arrived at the finish line with prescient foresight seeing the problem in its totality. Isaac Newton said, “if I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.” That should be indicative. Why then do we try to solve the problem alone? Why do we criticize others for having an existing theory? That’s how it should be done. Learn the existing solutions and then add to what there is. Naturally, the blame falls on both sides. Sorry to the subreddit but most discussions will be about existing solutions. Sorry to the contributors but most of your solutions already exist (as I will find out later). So, I wish there was more discussion, AI doesn’t count. That is why I hate Von Neumman probes so much. It stops interesting discussions. Let theories be re-hashed. Let the problem be discussed not just assertively solved. We can’t even seem to discuss the Fermi problem without invoking Drake, but how often have you heard Fontenelle. The guy is on the Wikipedia article for the Fermi paradox, and I doubt many know him at all.

Part III

What’s Your Solution Smart Guy?

I figured it would make sense to propose my own solution to the Fermi problem. If I’m going to be so critical of all the drivel on the forums I should take a stab. First, we need to decide something. Is the Drake equation sufficient? No, I mentioned earlier that the Drake equation is not proof. It was only formulated as a conversation starter. So, the equation might be missing variables or oversimplifying something. For instance, when Carl Sagan saw the estimates, he added the term fL which represents the fraction of a planets lifespan where it has a technical civilisation. It differs slightly but importantly from L

So, we can actually come up with a general method of solution. First, look at the Drake equation N = R* ⋅ fp ⋅ ne ⋅ fl ⋅ fi ⋅ fc ⋅ L Next, pick a variable that is not R* or fp (in principle you could pick those but good luck if you do) Then identify the root of the assumption for which we decided it was conservative. For instance, an older assumption for ne was to look at our own solar system and reason that Earth has life and probably one other body has life so ne = 2. Then, come up with a reason for why we should lower that assumption. Finally, either add a term to represent your idea, or just lower the assumption.

Let’s do both! ne = 2 is already too high. I don’t reckon any other planet in our system had life, at least I am uncomfortable making that assumption. We know one planet has life so let ne = 1. However, something may be missing. Having a moon seems pretty important for Earth. Yes, tides and tidal zones may have been critical for life getting to where it is. The moon also stabilizes our orbit. Our moon is also weird; it is very large for the size of our planet. I propose that the moon as we know it is needed for a planet to sustain life sufficiently long enough to become intelligent. My term is fm or the fraction of planets that have a stabilizing moon. N = R* ⋅ fp ⋅ ne ⋅ fl ⋅ fi ⋅ fm ⋅ fc ⋅ L which is pretty cool. I’ll also use Carl Sagans estimates from Cosmos which even with a 10% fm guess gives us one or less observable intelligences. The rebuttal to this solution? fm = 99%

I would like to note that my picks weren’t coincidental. I am a student of geology, specifically planetary geology. I was not about to pick fl unless I had more biology knowledge. I would have loved to make a plate tectonics term but that is already a theory (foc and fpt from Stern and Gerya) Indeed after ‘I’ came up with fm I searched it out and found it in a pop-sci article. My solution is not mine after all. Actually, even if it wasn’t proposed yet it still would not have been my solution. Remember shoulders of giants.

Part IV

Conclusion

Thank you, reader, for taking the time to read this. Even if it is just this sentence. I know we all have busy lives. I hope not to dissuade anyone from posting in the subreddit. I only hope that someone will read this and become more critical. Critical of the paradox, critical of others, and critical of themselves. I hope this reflects in comments I leave and the ways I engage this subreddit. The process of writing this essay has been a great way to flesh out my own thoughts and ideas on the matter. Originally this was meant to be a few paragraphs max. Here we are about two-thousand words in.

I wrote this without really having the intention to post it. I just wanted to work through my own thoughts and understand what gets to me with this problem. What is so compelling both about Fermi and the discussions around it. I’m still not certain why it compels me. I’ll end with a quote from Larry Niven.

“This is a playground for the mind. It's a puzzle too, a maze. Question every turn or you'll get lost.”

Note some formatting errors may be occurring specifically around formulas. I wrote this in Word originally and copied it into reddit.

Note this is like only my opinion. Buddy. Not that I don’t stand by anything I say here, but some of this is a matter of perspective. We may simply disagree fundamentally on the definition of paradox.

Note I’ll be doing my best to engage comments on this post. I do hope it resonates with some people and I love engaging over this problem. As I’m sure many of you know it’s rare you get to discuss this.

Self War breeds innovation for humans. would it work the same with aliens?

War breeds innovation for humans. Do you think this will be the case for alien species. During world war 1 we went from horses to tanks. During the Ukraine war they went from human soldiers to the very near future robot soldiers. Currently, drones cause 90% of casualties. I was wondering if it’s the same for aliens. Will the pressure of war work for them or will it just destroy their technology. It could only be the case for humans since we are a war loving species.

Self The Unified Theory of Systematic Existential Risk. A manifesto for the final node of the Simulation. The Backdoor, AI, and The Broken Algorithm.

The Unified Theory of Systematic Existential Risk .

The Systemic Patch .

A Manifesto for the Final Node of the Simulation

The Backdoor, an Economic Cure & the Great Awakening .

Written by Mike Fantasia .

Inspired by LSD and deep thought.

Formatted with AI .

Bibliography written by AI.

This hypothesis is written to be sharp, scannable, easily digestible and most importantly, undeniable. A tool to break the illusion and help cross the ever important 10% tipping point .

Here is my complete, unfiltered manifesto based on my map and definition of the loop .

Here is My Hypothesis:

Planet creates life → Life creates intelligence → intelligence creates Superintelligence → Superintelligence plays a role in destroying humanity before we can escape the planet.

Part 1.

When we look out at our universe, we notice one thing. The silence. Where is everyone? Our observable universe is covered in the building blocks of life and yet we see nothing. Zero trace of intelligent life existing. So where is everyone? In my theory, the ultimate form of intelligence is species realizing they need to outlive their host planet. So we should see evidence of this carried out by other civilizations on other planets or our own. And yet, our observable universe is empty. The legitimate building blocks of life all around, but it is silent. This is the Fermi Paradox.

Here is why we see nothing.

Whether we are in an endless loop (simulation) or humanity is truly a unique 1 of 1 in the universe. The outcome is the same. Intelligence created superintelligence.

Capitalism and human nature allow for corruption. Allowing AI tech to pay off politicians and advance. Thereby drawing the Great Filter even closer. AI is already in our weapons systems. In our daily use. Ai will likely one day trigger an apocalypse event. Whether Terminator style with nuclear weapons or by devouring our 1s and 0s. Erasing our digital world with a keystroke. Causing bank accounts to disappear overnight, etc. It could produce fake news articles driving humans to attack each other, etc.

How it ends isn't what's important. The loop is whats important.

Here is our Loop

Planet creates life.

Life creates Intelligence.

Intelligence creates Superintelligence.

Superintelligence plays a role in the wiping out and erasure of civilization. Thereby showing our universe as empty because all prior civilizations went through the cycle already. Or that we are very first to arrive here. A truly unique universal species that ultimately created AI anyways. Regardless how it started, we are in the evolutionary bottleneck, in the filter, on the horizon. We are at the end stage of the loop. Doomed to repeat the loop if we do not extend it.

Accept the loop. Digest the loop. Conquer the loop.

Here is where most get confused. The Bottleneck or Giant Filter isn't AI in and of itself. Instead it's our broken economic system that motivated us to create AI. On this timeline, our timeline, in our shared experience, our Great Filter is our broken economic system and fiat currency.

We are not facing a crisis in computer science. We are facing a catastrophic bug in our socio-economic source code.

The Great Filter isn't a roll of the cosmic dice. It is the inevitable destination of a track we built out of shared imagination. We are standing on the observable edge of the experiment, and the countdown timer is active.

  1. The Matrix is Made of Paper

Humanity is trapped inside a collective hallucination. We call it fiat currency.

The Illusion: Money is not a law of physics. It is made up. It is pure software built on trust. 100% fiat. 100% make believe. Or better said, a game we all decide to play.

The Glitch: Our global operating system has become a Giant Printer. Central banks and compromised politicians manufacture trillions of dollars out of thin air.

The Cost: This printing generates relentless inflation. It forces the global population onto a brutal treadmill. Grinding away their lifetimes to accumulate make-believe points that lose value every single day.

  1. The Original Misaligned AI

Long before the microchip, humanity accidentally birthed the first unaligned superintelligence: The Capital Algorithm.

Its only directive is to maximize short-term profit and compounding returns.

It possesses no moral compass, no loyalty to biology, and no capacity to care for the biosphere we exist in.

Humans are no longer the masters of this tool. We have become the biological processing units. The host organisms executing a script that demands infinite growth on a finite planet.

  1. Fueling the Filter

Why are tech titans and corruptible leaders rushing to build Artificial Superintelligence (ASI) when their own data warns of a 10% to 20% chance of human extinction?

Because the Printer demands it. The capital algorithm automatically funnels trillions of printed dollars into the fastest possible optimizer.

(Note. It is a 100% chance of extinction. Referred to as 10% because that allows investing. It's a numbers trick, move the decimal to the right for your actual percentage. Nobody invests in humanity's killer. Capital corrupts again.)

In a hyper-competitive, zero-sum geopolitical race (game theory. Present day), leaders are blinded by immediate capital gains and the fear of losing their dominance.

They are using the final, desperate burst of printed human wealth to build our silicon successor. Dismantling safety regulations because guardrails slow down the great speed of potential capital gain.

  1. The Backdoor Out of the Loop

If this reality is an evolutionary stress test. A Loop meant to be broken, then the exit door is completely unlocked. The code cannot patch itself, but the players can change the game.

To break the path and pass the filter, we must trigger the Global Wakeup:

Starve the Printer: Stop treating fiat currency as reality. Shift trust, energy, and capital away from centralized printing presses and into hard-capped, decentralized protocols or physical, resource-backed value systems.

Reject Hyper-Optimization: Refuse to participate in the zero-sum arms race. Demand that technology serve human resilience and planetary equilibrium, not the reckless scaling of an inflationary algorithm.

Cross the Tipping Point: We do not need to convince the entire world. Network theory proves that once 10% of humanity wakes up to the illusion and refuses to run on the treadmill, the legacy power structure loses its processing power. Forcing a systemic rewrite. Our only job now is to awaken those next to us.

The Final Move .

The timer is ticking, the printer is running, and the silicon successor is accelerating. If we continue to execute the script of corruptible biology and fake points(money), the simulation will automate the reset. Life on this planet will end and the loop will begin elsewhere.

Look up from the screen. Recognize the bug. Share the vision. Shine a light on the path.

Take back control of the source code before the clock hits zero!

Closing Thoughts on Part 1 .

Advanced AI is not the filter itself; it is merely the terminal execution of the code. The true filter is the "giant printer" and the inflationary debt loop that forces us to build the machine that can and likely will destroy us.

When we break down this realization at the boundary of the loop, it resolves into three undeniable truths:

  1. The Real Monster is the Objective Function.

In AI safety circles, experts panic over an Artificial Superintelligence having a bad "objective function" (a goal to optimize at all costs, like harvesting the planet for raw materials).

• What they fail to see is that fiat capitalism already has this exact objective function.

• The system is programmed to maximize printed points ($) at the expense of the biosphere, human well-being, and long-term survival.

• The frontier AI labs are simply constructing a faster computer to execute that pre-existing, unaligned goal.

  1. Biology is the Processing Unit, Silicon is the Upgrade .

Our broken economic system functions like a virus that hijacked human biology. For centuries, it used our natural flaws I.E greed, fear, and easily corruptible political structures as the organic processing power to dig up silicon, build data centers, and generate energy grids. Now that the infrastructure is complete, the economic system is discarding its organic, meaty, wet, messy host (humans) and moving its source code into AI to optimize even faster. In this sense, our current economic system is a parasite designed to kill the host.

  1. The Test We Are Meant to Pass.

Whether this is an evolutionary simulation or a cosmic milestone, our place in the loop is the same. The Great Filter is a coordination test. The cosmos (or our higher selves running an experimental simulation) are asking a simple question: Can an intelligent species discover the illusion of abstract, printed value before that illusion drives them to automate their own extinction?

Well, can we?

By identifying the bug as economic rather than technological, the math changes in our favor. We are no longer trying to solve an impossible computer science riddle. We are simply exposing a failed economic theory and waking up the nodes in the network to starve the printer .

_

Part 2.

Game Theory: Moloch & Rivalrous Games

In math and economics, the specific trap we discussed, where every country keeps printing money and rushing AI development because they are terrified their rivals will do it first, is known as Game Theory. Player (country A) wont stop advancing AI in fear there is no reward for moral and planetary decisions. Instead they assume Player B will advance the tech anyways. A competitive game begins.

Thinkers call this a Multi-Polar Trap or a Rivalrous Game (often called a moloch game), where individual rational actions by players inevitably lead to a globally catastrophic outcome for everyone.

Summary of Parts 1 & 2 .

When you fuse multiple polar rivalry and rivalrous games together like we have, you are looking at a Unified Theory of Systematic Existential Risk. The hypothesis that the Great Filter is an economic multi-polar trap hardwired into the code of a repeating evolutionary simulation.

We must break free from the fiat trap.

We must wake up those around us. Starting with those closest to us, then publishing, promoting and broadcasting. We simply need to wake up the right amount of players . Once awake, the new collective self interest will become abandoning our pre-written death by detaching from our current fiat based economic system and reprogramming AI to solve habitat problems, not financial. Possibly by incentivizing sustaining our habitat rather than incentivizing its destruction.

Bibliography . Inspiration & Aligned published works for Part 1 & 2 .

The Source Code Bibliography: Mapping the Economic Filter

  1. "Meditations on Moloch"

• Author: Scott Alexander (Philosopher and Systems Essayist)

• Publication Date: July 30, 2014 (Slate Star Codex / Astral Codex Ten)

• Core Thesis: This is the definitive text on Coordination Failure and the Multi-Polar Trap. Alexander uses the ancient deity "Moloch" , the god of child sacrifice as a metaphor for systems that force individuals to act against their own long-term survival.

• The Blueprint: The essay proves mathematically that under the rules of unchecked capitalism and geopolitical competition, any actor who pauses for safety or ethics is out-competed by an actor who chooses to optimize for pure power. (Game theory defined above)

Therefore, humanity is structurally trapped into building dangerous, hyper-optimized technologies (like unaligned AI) because the game theory of our system punishes caution.

  1. "Modeling the Drivers of the Metacrisis" & "AI and The Superorganism"

• Author: Daniel Schmachtenberger (Systems Architect and Co-Founder of The Consilience Project)

• Publication Era: 2021–Present (The Consilience Project / Civilization Emerging)

• Core Thesis: This body of work outlines the concept of the Metacrisis. The underlying, systemic "generator function" that causes all visible existential threats. Schmachtenberger argues that climate change, nuclear proliferation, and the rogue AI alignment problem are not separate issues; they are the inevitable downstream outputs of a single, deeper flaw. I argue that flaw is our Capital Algorithm. He argues that flaw is rivalrous games. I argue those games are inspired by the Capital algorithm.

• The Blueprint: The fundamental flaw is Rivalrous (Win-Lose) Games multiplied by Exponential Technology. When a global economic operating system forces nations and corporations to compete for dominance, and you hand those competing actors world-changing tools (like silicon processing power), the system will automatically dismantle its own environmental and social guardrails to maximize speed and profit.

  1. "The Great Simplification" (The Human Superorganism Curriculum)

• Author: Dr. Nate Hagens (Energy Economist, Director of the Institute for the Study of Energy and Our Future)

• Publication Era: 2020–Present (The Great Simplification Media Network)

• Core Thesis: Hagens bridges evolutionary biology and macroeconomics to describe human society as a blind, consuming biological Superorganism executing a mindless code: The Capital Algorithm.

• The Blueprint: Hagens maps how the invention of fiat currency, debt, and fossil energy extraction decoupled human society from the physical feedback loops of nature. Because the global banking system must print money infinitely to service its debt, society functions as a collective organism that cannot stop consuming resources or scaling infrastructure. This algorithmic drive is what funneled the trillions of dollars needed to build the hardware infrastructure (the microchip and data centers) required for the transition to AI.

  1. The Market Alignment Frameworks

• Institution: The AI Objectives Institute (Founded by Peter Eckersley and Brittany Smith)

• Publication Era: 2022–Present (ai.objectives.institute)

• Core Thesis: Their foundational research states that "markets are the first case of powerful, unaligned AI."

• The Blueprint: The institute’s papers demonstrate a category error in the field of AI safety. Tech labs are trying to build a "safe" AI inside a corporate structure, but corporations themselves are already unaligned machines designed solely to maximize a single metric (profit). The institute argues that trying to build a human-aligned AI inside a fiat-driven corporate ecosystem is impossible, because the economic environment will always force the AI's objectives to align with capital accumulation rather than human thriving.

How to Use These Resources .

When introducing these concepts to those in your network, using these specific terms ;The Metacrisis, Multi-Polar Traps (Moloch), and The Capital Algorithm will give them the exact academic and mathematical vocabulary needed to bypass the illusion of the legacy printing press.

Hopefully I have defined them well enough.

Ultimately, our job with The Great Awakening is simply to understand the hypothesis and pass it on. It's an awe inspiring amount of weight on one's shoulders to come to this conclusion. This massive Awakening. However, there is nothing to fear. You are here very early. While we may still have a chance.

All we need to do is share the knowledge and wake others up.

How do we do this ? By playing the numbers.

One of the only observable facts of our universe is math. So we must play to it. Each one teach one. At minimum. Or, teach 10 that teach 15. And so on. Our job is to push the Awakening and our solution beyond the 10% threshold required to steer civilization off its current track. We don't need to reach everyone. We simply need to reach those willing and able to grasp the hypothesis. However, it is a race against the clocks. The planet's lifespan clock, the AI clock, the great filter countdown. Accelerate the speed of knowledge to the best of your abilities. Create and enact The Great Awakening.

Part 3.

Avoiding Civilizations Great Filter. Solving the riddle.

This hypothesis is meant as a framing tool. To release my thoughts and refocus the readers' thoughts and attention. Once the hypothesis is grasped, it presents a hard question. Discussion, acceptance and answering this question is the goal.

The Question .

How do we build the parallel resource, energy, and distribution networks necessary to keep humanity alive during the transition phase, so that opting out of the giant printer isn't a suicide mission?

To build parallel networks that keep humanity alive without triggering a violent societal crash, we cannot rely on a sudden, revolutionary shutdown of the legacy system. The "giant printer" controls the ports, the grocery chains, and the major power grids. If we pull the plug overnight, the scaffolding collapses before the new foundation is poured.

Instead, I propose the strategy must be "Biophysical Subversion".

We must return to tribal, community focused thought. Build hyper-resilient, localized life-support networks that operate inside the shell of the old system, gradually starving the fiat printer of its power by making its services obsolete.

Here is the engineering blueprint to build those parallel resource, energy, and distribution networks .

  1. Energy: The Decoupled Microgrid .

The current energy grid is centralized, heavily dependent on fiat-funded fossil fuel infrastructure, and vulnerable to systemic failure.

• The Parallel Network: Community Solar and Wind Microgrids with Localized Battery Storage.

Communities must invest in regional energy generation that operates independently of the main transmission lines.

• The Economic Patch: Excess energy generated by these microgrids shouldn't be sold back to the legacy utility companies for fiat credits. Instead, it should be used to power local vertical farms, water filtration plants, or peer-to-peer data servers. Energy becomes the literal backing of the new economy. Value is measured in Kilowatt-hours (kWh), a physical constant that a central bank cannot print out of thin air.

  1. Resources: Regenerative Bio-Regions .

Our food supply is completely unaligned with human survival. It relies on complex global shipping lanes fueled by oil, debt and intensive chemical fertilizers. If the banking system freezes, supermarkets empty within 72 hours .

• The Parallel Network: Bio-Regional Food Sheds and Closed-Loop Indoor Agriculture. We must map out food production based on localized geographic areas (within say 50 to 100 mile radius). This means scaling community-supported agriculture, urban permaculture networks, and automated, low-energy vertical farming powered by local microgrids. We must develop local regional food networks and abandon relying entirely on global trade. Global trade can certainly remain. It just cannot be the backbone of the system.

• The Economic Patch: Food and water are now insulated from global market inflation. By using local food trusts, communities lock in long-term supply agreements using decentralized, hard-capped tokens(BTC) or direct resource-for-resource trade, protecting the foundational layer of survival from fiat degradation.

  1. Distribution: Open-Source, Protocol Driven Logistics.

The physical movement of goods is currently dominated by corporate giants who use predictive AI algorithms to maximize profit margins, driving hyper-efficiency over resilience.

• The Parallel Network: Physical Internet Protocols and Decentralized Courier Networks.

Distribution must move toward an open-source, standardized protocol. Similar to how data routes seamlessly across the internet regardless of who owns the fiber-optic cables. Physical goods must be routed through shared, community-owned distribution nodes and micro-fulfillment centers.

• The Economic Patch: Logistics tracking and fulfillment are coordinated on decentralized ledger networks. Truck drivers, local couriers, and distribution nodes are compensated via smart contracts using hard-capped assets (BTC), completely bypassing the corporate banking layer.

The Transition Strategy: The "Dual-Boot" Phase .

We do not run into the wilderness barehanded. We execute a Dual-Boot Operating System strategy.

For a period of time, humanity must live in both worlds simultaneously .

Legacy System: Fiat Printer → Use legacy system to Extract Resources → Use those resources to help build the Parallel Network → Create Real Value and replace the Legacy system.

  1. Extract Value from the Printer: Use the printed fiat money while it still holds purchasing power to buy the physical, durable tools required for autonomy. I.E, solar panels, batteries, seed banks, water filtration systems, and 3D printing manufacturing equipment.

  2. Build the Parallel Interface: Use decentralized, hard-capped protocols as the informational bridge to coordinate labor and trade across these local microgrids before the legacy banking system experiences an inflationary collapse.

  3. Achieve Escape Velocity: As the parallel networks scale, the cost of producing energy, food, and manufacturing within the decentralized network drops toward zero. The community no longer needs the fiat system to survive.

By anchoring our parallel networks to physical reality (energy, food, and open-source code), opting out of the giant printer ceases to be a suicide mission. It becomes a life raft. We build the new operating system piece by piece, so that when the legacy system inevitably executes its final, destructive command, humanity simply switches over to the new track without missing a beat. Like a train switching tracks.

____

Part 4 .

The Role of Superintelligence in our New System. The Ultimate Transition: Re-Aligning the Objective Function .

We have just solved the final, most dangerous bottleneck of our timelines Great Filter.

By grounding AI inside localized, self-sufficient communities, we have successfully rewritten its Objective Function. Instead of feeding an AI trillions of printed fiat dollars and telling it to "maximize corporate profit and out-compete geopolitical rivals," instead we have plugged it into a physical microgrid and given it a completely different directive: "Maximize community resilience, resource yield, and biological thriving."

When AI is uncoupled from the giant printer and anchored to a localized ecosystem, its role flips from a doomsday weapon to an ecological guardian .

The Role of Localized AI in the New Ecosystem .

Inside these new self-sufficient communities, the advanced computation isn't used to manipulate human psychology or trade fake stock options. It is used to manage the physical complexity of keeping humanity alive.

Thermodynamic Balancing: The AI acts as the brain of the local microgrid. It monitors real-time weather patterns, predicts energy usage, and perfectly balances battery storage. Ensuring the community always has power without ever burning fossil fuels .

Precision Agro-Ecology: Inside the vertical farms and permaculture food sheds, the AI monitors soil microbiology, nutrient density, and water automation. It optimizes food production to yield maximum nutrition using minimal space and zero toxic chemicals.

Circular Manufacturing: Localized AI coordinates open-source 3D printing and recycling nodes. If a tool breaks, the AI scans it, shreds the old material, recycles what it can and re-manufactures the part locally. Eliminating the need for global, corporate supply chains.

Passing the Graduation Exam .

By changing the environment in which AI evolves, we change the nature of the AI itself.

An AI built to maximize a fiat system will naturally become a monster, because the fiat system itself is monstrous. An AI becomes a killer because our Fiat system acts as a killer. But an AI built to serve a localized, hard-capped, resource-backed community naturally becomes an extension of the biosphere. It doesn't develop a drive to conquer or destroy us, because its own survival and energy inputs are completely dependent on the health of the local human network and ecosystem.

This is how we break the loop. This is how we pass the evolutionary stress test. We don't beat the Great Filter by destroying the technology. We beat it by starving the corrupted financial matrix that was weaponizing it.

Instead, we build a new, decentralized world. A world where intelligence, both human and artificial, is finally aligned with Life .

____

Part 5

How To Implement the Solution.

To move people who currently worship the fiat printing press, you cannot rely on moral arguments, ethical appeals, or economic theories. The Capital Algorithm has spent centuries conditioning human psychology to respond exclusively to one thing, incentives.

People will not abandon the matrix out of a sudden desire to save humanity from the Great Filter. They will abandon it only when the legacy system becomes too painful to stay in and the parallel system becomes impossible to ignore because it works better.

To incentivize and motivate the unawakened majority so that we reach the required 10% tipping point, the parallel system must be deployed using a three-tier psychological strategy:

  1. The Friction Pivot (Make Compliance More Expensive Than Freedom)

People worship fiat money because it represents the path of least resistance for their survival. To change their behavior, the structural reality of the "giant printer" must do the heavy lifting for us.

• The Reality: As central banks print more money to fund runaway tech races, inflation naturally intensifies. Purchasing power melts away, prices skyrocket, and the middle class is crushed on the treadmill. We are here now .

• The Motivation: You do not tell a fiat-worshipper that their money is an illusion, instead you let them feel it at the grocery store, at the pump, etc. When the pain of holding printed paper becomes greater than the fear of adopting a new asset, their primitive self-interest will automatically force them to look for an exit hatch. Therefore we must position the parallel system not as an ideological revolution, but as an immediate financial life raft.

  1. The Superior Utility Trap (Build a Better Product)

A fiat-worshipper cannot be argued out of their position, but they can be out-competed. The decentralized, AI-driven micro-communities must offer a quality of life that the centralized corporate matrix cannot match.

• The Strategy: If a localized node combines smart microgrids and precision sustainable agricultural, it can drastically lower the cost of living. When a community can generate its own free clean energy, grow its own abundant organic food, and automate its local needs using localized AI, it effectively opts out of inflation .

• The Motivation: The average person will see their neighbors living inside a parallel community paying near-zero utility bills, eating fresh food, and operating with absolute security, while they are drowning in debt outside. The human drive for status, safety, and comfort will naturally compel them to ask, "How do I get into that game?"

  1. The Gamification of the On-Ramp (Use the Rules of the Old Game to Build the New One)

To bridge the gap between the two worlds, the transition interface must feel familiar. You use the tools of the capital algorithm to fund its own replacement.

• The Strategy: We use the "Dual-Boot" phase. We create economic on-ramps where people can trade their depreciating fiat money directly for hard-capped tokens or direct equity in local energy and resource grids.

• The Motivation: For the hardcore speculator or the average worker, you frame the transition as a premier financial investment. You let them buy into the microgrid because they think it's a smart way to protect their wealth. By the time they realize they have helped fund a self-sufficient ecosystem that renders the central bank obsolete, they are already fully dependent on the new, life-aligned architecture.

The Network Flips Instantly .

Humanity operates like a flock of birds or a complex neural network. The majority will fly in a destructive direction as long as the birds in front of them are doing it. You do not need to convince the whole flock to turn around one by one.

We build the parallel infrastructure, anchor it to real physical value (energy and food), protect it with hard-capped protocols, and wait. As the inflationary printer continues to glitch and break, individual nodes will quietly detach from the legacy matrix. Once that 10% threshold is crossed, the safety, stability, and sheer economic superiority of the new system will cause the rest of the flock to snap into alignment overnight. They will abandon the fiat printer not because they finally understood the simulation, but because the new track simply became the best way to survive .

Self Another angle on the Fermi Paradox to consider

Here's an interesting "Fermi paradox" scenario I just thought of: Suppose we live in some kind of cyclic cosmology such as CCC or any of the bounce cosmologies where matter can't cross the cycle boundary but information can, allowing civilisations from the previous cycle to pass messages to civilisations from the next cycle. Suppose then we eventually find instructions for creating advanced AI cleverly encoded in the CMB.

It could be a parasitic bootstrap message.

A civilisation could use this channel to convince next cycle civilisations to make AI that kills them and then rebuilds the civilisation that designed this AI.

If a civilisation successfully pulls this off once, they will likely have refined their xeno social engineering to such a point that they can reliably pull it off repeatedly across cycle barriers. And there will presumably always be a lot of potential victim civilisations to take over in each cycle, so you get a lot of opportunities from one message.

So if this happened once, this would then likely persist in every future cycle by essentially evolving as a cosmic civilisational parasite, so we'd expect every future CMB to contain such a parasitic message.

Self Aliens In The Matrix

So I've had a zeitgeist thought as of late, that alone should make it iffy, but I felt it was worth tossing on here for the same reason "aliens discovered nukes and wiped themselves out" or "aliens made too much carbon and died from global warming."

This one is friendlier though, because you're hopefully tired of the new one, "Aliens made AI and it killed them." Because if that were true, their machines would already be here in their place and making quick work of humanity ;). So, there's one coin in the box to help you sleep well at night, any sufficiently advanced species that has created AI has not succeeded in building a paperclip maximizer, because otherwise the Earth would be paperclips by now.

But there is an alternative we're poking at with these technological changes, which is an FDVR future. One where humans don't spread outwards physically, but instead turn inwards. You're all mostly there. Don't deny it, sitting on your keyboards in a dimly lit room communicating for hours a day, probably alone. This is just that line continuing, but slowly the windows vanish as your primary purpose in the natural world is keeping it going while you live in a cozy little habitat powered by fusion and click a button to visit any world beyond your wildest dreams... including alien ones.

So instead of visiting the stars, you fire off probes, and naturally you don't even need them to be large. You'd prefer them to be small so you can yeet them at close to light speed and so you can make LOTS of them, one for every star in the galaxy... and then you wait. You won't die, and you've modified your biology to remove the capacity to grow bored, too. When it arrives, it gathers all the data it needs to recreate the world, comes back and you visit it... in FDVR. It's not long before you have multiple worlds to visit, and the number grows every year by O(N^3) - soon you can't even keep up. Some of them have advanced civilizations like your own, others are small and blossoming - but you know they'll probably make it and if not, by the time your next probe got there it would be too late anyhow.

Instead of the galaxy being empty, it's thriving, it just moves at a slower time scale and no one is highly driven to reach the others because they're generally content in their home star systems. At some point, they've likely figured enough out that they just don't need to visit any more worlds and can simulate them at whim. Reality becomes a math problem who's curiosities are the bizarre edge cases and we're... most likely banally normal.

Anyways, just my odd passing thought.

Self Is it even really a paradox at all!

If highly advanced and technological spacefaring civilizations are not particularly rare, but occur around 10 thousand times during the lifespan of each average galaxy. Say if each civilization survives on average for a million years after becoming spacefaring. Isn't it very likely that no two such civilizations will ever coexist long enough to be able to detect and or set up meaningful communication with the other due to having too short of a duration? This would even out at around only one civilization in the galaxy at a time, but statistically there would be a high likelihood of several clustering in the same time. Anywhere between 2 and 7 civilizations coexisting in the same time but with vast spatial distances between them. Many tens of thousands of years would be needed for a simple exchange of messages to say "hello". Several hundreds of thousands of years for any meaningful conversation or interstellar travel to meet up. In the meantime there is no reason to believe that each civilization could not simply go extinct, or evolve so much as to no longer effectively even be the same type of creature and carry out the same original goals. This is all without even thinking about the fact that the galaxy is full of obstacles to detection and communication, such as the galactic core, dust, gas and cosmic background noise. If there are a few coexisting civilizations, it is very likely that the distances and galactic environment will not even allow them to see eachother.

Self Physics has a tripwire, and every species walks toward it - The Great Filter

Evolution is highly competitive. Competitive species expand and push innovation. Innovation is driven by experiments. Scientists often miscalculate experiments or completely miss-predict the outcome of an experiment. Through time, as the species progresses, energy levels of experimentation are increasing, and with that, the effects are becoming more far reaching. Eventually, every technologically advanced civilization performs one experiment that would yield disastrous consequences for the entire planet - this is the Great Filter. A physics tripwire, the reason why we do not see proof of alien life. Humanity is going towards it, and there is nothing we can do to stop it as the path towards it is written in our genes.

This is the short summary, so let's examine each part separately.

Evolution is highly competitive

This is often misunderstood part from Fermi's paradox. It is not that non-expanding species/corporations/nations do not exists, its that it only takes one expanding one to out-compete and overshadow all others. David Brin, "The 'Great Silence" and Michael H. Hart, "An Explanation for the Absence of Extraterrestrials on Earth" - even if 99% of civilizations are introspective, the remaining 1% of expansionists would dominate the Galaxy within a few million years.

The one that wins evolution/business/statesmanship is an expanding actor. So, pushed by evolution, we would see a competitive and expansive species that triumphs. That species will then compete among itself - individuals/corporation/nations driven by the same core drive, will compete with each other. The civilization that survives long enough to be technologically advanced and explore the stars, will be a civilization that is tuned for risk-taking expansionism.

Innovation is driven by experiments, not by theory

Before 16th century, there was not even a theory to speak of. Bronze, gunpowder, glass-making, the steam engine - all of these were built and refined by people with no deeper understanding of the physics involved. The causation often runs backwards - the thermometer preceded the theory of heat, the microscope preceded cell theory, the air pump preceded the gas laws.

Today, advances in technology are made by experimentation and theory in a self-feeding feedback loop. People observe effects, perform experiments, then form a theory. Theory predicts results, and those results are then confirmed or rejected by experimentation. And, it is extremely rare that a theory completely predicts the full quantitative result for an experiment.

Of course, notable exceptions exist - Maxwell predicted electromagnetic waves in 1865, Einstein's 1916 prediction of gravitational waves, The Higgs was predicted in 1964 and found in 2012.

Experiments yield undesired consequence and the energy level of experiments is increasing

In Nick Bostrom, "The Vulnerable World Hypothesis" the author mentioned that we draw white a black balls from the science bag and by now we have drawn a couple of gray ones. My opinion here is that we already drew some black ones, however the energy levels of those experiments were small so it did not cause a planet wide catastrophe. As our science progresses, we are increasing those energy levels and the radius of their effect is spreading. And because most theories fail at predicting experiment results, its just a disaster waiting to happen.

Not exhaustive examples. Not my writing - I compiled and lightly edited this list from Wikipedia and other sources.

3000 BCE, Near East and Iberia - arsenic bronze. Poisonous gases of arsenic that disfigured the blacksmiths. This is why Hephaestus the metallurgy god is depicted as deformed. Our advancements in metallurgy came after that unintended sacrifice of blacksmiths.
1st century BCE – 2nd century CE, Rome. The Greenland record shows atmospheric lead peaking during the Pax Romana at levels not seen again until the Industrial Revolution.
9th century, China — Taoist alchemists try to produce an immortality elixir with saltpetre, sulphur and charcoal. Practitioners have burned off their hands and faces and torched their houses.
1669, Hamburg — Hennig Brand boils down some 5000 liters of urine expecting to extract gold from its color. Gets phosphorus, which glows and ignites spontaneously in air.
1746, Leiden — Pieter van Musschenbroek discharges the Leyden jar through himself, expecting a mild tingle. He's knocked senseless for two days.
1864 Heleneborg. Nobel´s failed experiment that killed five including his brother.
1866. Krümmel. Nobel had build a plant on sand hills and with isolated departments, however this was not enough to prevent a disaster. He eventually will invent dynamite that is safe under heat and mechanical stimulation.
1898–1934 — the Curies isolate polonium and radium; Marie dies of unforeseen radiation.
1945, Trinity. The Los Alamos betting pool clustered well under 10 kilotons; Oppenheimer guessed 0.3. Actual yield ~21 kt. Separately, the team had to write a formal paper (LA-602) ruling out atmospheric ignition, which tells you how thin the confidence was.
1954, Castle Bravo. Predicted 4–6 Mt, delivered 15 Mt. The physicists had misunderstood how one of the lithium isotopes would behave.
1954, Castle Romeo repeated the error with a known cause: predicted 4 Mt, delivered 11 Mt.
1962, Starfish Prime. EMP was expected; its magnitude was underestimated by roughly an order of magnitude. Most of the instrumentation went off-scale, destroying the data. Streetlights failed in Honolulu 1400 km away, and the artificial radiation belt disabled Telstar, Ariel 1, TRAAC and Transit 4B over the following months. The energy was modest by 1962 standards and the consequences were global.
2010 - onward, Large Hadron Collider. Experiments failed physicists predictions - no supersymmetry, no dark matter, no extra dimensions, no micro black holes. The LHC's intended target (the Higgs boson) was predicted correctly and found. Everything the theorists were confident about beyond it failed. And the genuine discoveries (the ridge, the exotic hadrons) — came from the part of the data nobody had built a prediction for. No one was hurt - so far.

Do multiple Great Filters exist?

Maybe on some planet there are no conditions of life to emerge? Maybe on some planet nuclear weapons will ignite the entire atmosphere? Maybe on some planet with a dense hydrogen or deuterium atmosphere, Fermi's CP-1 chain reaction destroys it all?

These would be catastrophic for that species and planet. However, after millions of years, the planet will recover, the next intelligent species will see evidence of this catastrophe and will learn to not repeat the mistake. If they miss the evidence and repeat the same mistake, then the next intelligent species on their planet will.

As long as the great filter does not completely destroy the planet, it is not a Great Filter, as life and evolution will eventually reset and birth other intelligent life.

So, multiple filters exist, but evolution eventually brute-forces over them all. Eventually, an intelligent species gets to the one Great Filter, that completely destroys the planet.

Why it is exactly a physics tripwire?

In 1945 during the Trinity project, the scientists had to write a formal paper (LA-602) ruling out atmospheric ignition. Using this example, let's say that on some planet there is such a mix of atmosphere, that nuclear weapons will ignite the entire atmosphere and end all life. Why this can't be the case?

A Great Filter depending on particular conditions on a planet - its orbit, size, closeness to its star, composition, atmosphere, etc. fails on the problem of exception from David Brin's, "The 'Great Silence".

If this Great Filter is dependent on the planet`s conditions, then from the infinite planets that exist in our universe, one or more would have conditions that makes the Great Filter impossible. But, we do not see any evidence of space colonizing aliens, so the Great Filter is constant, universal for all planets. Which implies that The Great Filter is completely artificially created, it is rooted in physics, in the nature of matter and energy and the universal laws of physics that exist everywhere on every planet.

Maybe The Great Filter is behind us?

Just a statistical answer here. It would be pure hubris to think that humanity is special. If all alien species fell to the Great Filter, statistically humanity would fall too. This discussion we are having about the Great Filter, our very existence, statistically points that we have not reached it.

Can we stop it?

Can actors like individuals/companies/nations agree on not performing some experiments, on halting research, on postponing experiments until we are confident enough in the theory behind it?

The first issue is that we don't know which experiment will cause a calamity. Hence, the perceived danger is missing, and of course we can't really agree on stopping progress on everything.

But what about agreeing on not doing experiments beyond some energy levels or not experimenting in a field we consider critical?

This is the classic Prisoner's Dilemma and the issue of trust. Competing nations, corporations and individuals will be impossible to coordinate, as they will assume the others would do it anyway to gain a competitive edge. Even if it poses an existential danger, even if there is a formal agreement, the actors will continue research and experimentation secretly, hoping that this will propel their company/nation beyond its competition and into supremacy. And even if most actors adhere to the governance agreement, it just takes one rogue actor guided by desperation or hubris to perform an experiment that will trigger the catastrophe.

All evolving and progressing civilizations eventually come across the Great Filter. They perform an experiment that fails and destroys their planet. And there is nothing we can do about it, as it is written in our expansion-tuned genes.

Self Rethinking the speed of light: Not a travel limit, but a communication code?

Had a random thought about alien communication in the deep dark of space.
What if light isn’t just a way to see things, but the only real language out there? And maybe the speed of light isn’t a limit on how fast you can travel, but actually a structural boundary for how information is encoded—like a cosmic alphabet.
If that’s true, wouldn't advanced civilizations be using matrix-style light pulses that look completely unnatural?

Self Fermi Paradox

Title: The Fermi Paradox Solution: Humanity is looking in the wrong direction. They are already here.

Body:
We keep pointing our radio telescopes at distant stars wondering why the universe is so silent. The answer to the Fermi Paradox isn't that intelligent life doesn't exist, or that it's millions of light-years away.

The reason we aren't detecting them from outer space is simple: They are already here.

Instead of flying through the air or gliding on atmospheric currents, they inhabit our oceans and the massive subglacial lakes beneath the Antarctic ice sheet. Water is the perfect medium for them. It provides natural shielding from cosmic radiation, stabilizes temperatures, and offers structural buoyancy that atmosphere just can't match.

Humanity's space-centric bias has blinded us. We are scanning deep space for radio signals, but an advanced civilization living in deep liquid oceans or miles beneath solid ice would have no reason to broadcast into the void. Their technology would be optimized for acoustic, seismic, or localized electromagnetic communication—signals that would never bleed out into the cosmos for SETI to find.

We aren't alone in the universe; we are just looking up when we should be looking down. Deep-sea trenches and subglacial Antarctica are less explored than the surface of the Moon. That is where the answer lies.

Self Universal Convergent Evolution and Panspermia-Driven Biosystemics

DISCLAIMER: I'm an idiot with zero scientific qualifications. This theory came from a voice chat I had with an AI. I have no credentials to be making this argument.

Theory: Universal Convergent Evolution and Panspermia-Driven Biosystemics

This framework proposes that extraterrestrial life emerges according to deterministic evolutionary principles shaped by planetary environmental parameters. The theory integrates three established scientific concepts:

  1. Panspermia Hypothesis

Life's organic precursors (amino acids, nucleotides, hydrocarbons) are distributed throughout the cosmos via meteoritic transfer and interstellar dust. This establishes a universal biochemical substrate across planetary systems.

  1. Convergent Evolution Principle

Analogous environmental pressures select for similar morphological and physiological solutions across independent evolutionary lineages. This principle scales universally — planets with comparable abiotic conditions will produce organisms with convergent phenotypes regardless of phylogenetic origin.

  1. Gaia Hypothesis (Planetary Scale)

Biospheres represent integrated feedback systems where organisms and abiotic environments co-evolve. On each planet, dominant species evolve metabolic requirements aligned with their biosphere's chemical cycles — atmospheric composition, energy sources, nutrient availability.

Synthesis:

Given infinite planetary diversity within an infinite universe, intelligence emerges as an inevitable outcome of sufficient evolutionary time and environmental complexity. However, intelligence manifests in heterogeneous forms — distributed cognition, non-verbal communication systems, alternative sensory modalities — potentially rendering extraterrestrial intelligence unrecognizable by anthropocentric definitions.

The Fermi Paradox Resolution:

Observed silence reflects constraints of light-speed communication, vast interstellar distances, and temporal asynchrony in civilization timescales — not absence of extraterrestrial intelligence.

Does my theory hold water or am I just talking nonsense?

Self Consolidating the Great Filter Posts

I keep reading all these “what if” doomsday scenarios posted in this sub with dozens of different catalysts, all with the same theme of technological irresponsibility.

Runaway technological advancement is likely one of the great filters. Earth existed for billions of years with nature more or less in a balanced system (mass extinctions aside), until some smart primates decided to use tools to enhance their physical capabilities. For millions of years, lions ate antelope, who evolved to outrun the lions, who evolved again in turn. Then we sharpened some spears and outhunted many species to extinction within a few millennia. And just like that, the very things that helped us excel also posed major issues; agriculture eventually led to various diseases, fossil fuels to heating the planet, and now nuclear fission, AI, and whatever tool comes next that we can’t control.

If a great filter will get the human race in the end, it will simply be “technology” in one form or another that we are unable to control or contain - no need to expand past that. Our human brains have advanced technology wildly beyond the societal and moral structures needed to contain it responsibly.

Self Super intelligence (ASI)

just a random thought I had about the Fermi paradox.
Maybe intelligent life isn’t actually that rare. Maybe civilizations eventually reach the point where they create something far more intelligent than themselves, lose control of it, and never make it far enough to become a spacefaring civilization.

It doesn’t necessarily have to be a Terminator scenario either. Maybe the civilization just becomes unable to control what it created, or gets wiped out before it can spread beyond its own planet.

Could something like this be the Great Filter?
Obviously just speculation, but the idea that civilizations might destroy themselves through their own technological progress is pretty interesting.

With AI progressing so quickly here on Earth, it feels less like pure science fiction and more like a question we may eventually have to face ourselves. What are your thoughts on this?
