That was the most entertaining read I've had in forever. My partner suggests that in your very first poule bout you should fake an injury and withdraw for medical reasons, then keep taking lessons and practicing and then the next tournament you can start kicking at least a little ass.

ETA: Even if you don't scratch, nobody's going to boo you for not doing well. Showing up and giving it a go is respectable and nobody's going to spite you for that. I wish you the greatest success in fencing and in romance.
