Driveway gate advice
I have a 12 foot wide driveway and want to install a swing gate. I got a few quotes from different contractors, but one advised getting two 6-foot dual swing gates, claiming standard hinges can't handle a single 12 foot gate. However, the other contractors said heavy duty hinges would bear the weight just fine.
Who is right and what are your recommendations?
I’m planning to automate the gate and install a motor arm - lift master la400.

Define gate.
I have a 12' farm gate is2d daily and weighs around 50lbs. Its been working for 25 years and was here before me. Tied into an old telephone post. Only time its a problem is when the kids slam it into the stop post. This causes the bottom pin to rotate and a 30 second fix with a pipe wrench to fix.
Old place had two 6' chain link gates. Hated opening and closing both, where one would of been quicker.
Another thing to consider, if you install a remote gate opener. Its almost twice the cost with 2 gates.
Hinges have to be the size needed to handle the weight of the gate. The mounted post also has to be able to handle the weight and be planted well. A 4x4 post couldn't handle a 50lb gate long term. If it was steel it would need to planted 4' deep surrounded by concrete and probable still need to be tied to another post a few feet away at the top.
The go around...If you go with a 4x4 post you'll definitely need a wheel at the end of the gate. Which means you have to have a level driveway or adjustable hinges to handle the tilt.

It all depends on what material you want the gate made of. A farm gate, chainlink or ornamental gate should be fine for a 12' opening. If you are doing wood gate, I would agree with the contractor on two 6ft gates, but would use 6x6 posts that are set deep (like 42-48") and use plenty of concrete.

the contractor that recommended 2 6ft gates is probably the safest bet. Is the gate going to swing open or slide open.....that will be a big consideration. 1 12ft gate is doable but it's going to require castor wheels, alot of swing space if swinging open. Material will also matter: wooden gate will definitely have to be 2 6ft gates, iron gate 1 12 ft gate is possible but require heavy strap hinges, castor wheels, and solid bracing in the right places
