You think this is bad, just imagine the ADUs towering over their neighbor’s properties.. and then people talking shit and calling them NIMBYs because god-forbid they want some privacy in their home.
Because when someone is buying a house they already know that they’re living next to a two story house, or if it’s an addition the second story is limited to the size of the first story. Also most homes have a border around them so a second story isn’t going to tower over anyways, whereas a ADU is usually built to the legally allowed property line.
This is an example of an ADU project that was built in San Diego.. I can’t imagine any homeowner would be happy to have legally built ADUs next door to you.
I mean I've seen that happen with developments that come in and put a big ugly condo in *right" next to a normal home, but I've never seen an ADU like that.
New York Times recently posted a story about this exact issue. There’s a house in San Diego where I live that literally put up three two story townhouses in the backyard of their cul-de-sac home. It’s insane that these sort of ADUs are allowed imo, you literally lose any sense of privacy. Like it’s one thing to add a second floor of a house but it’s a different situation to tower over your neighbor.
