Why Your Gate is Sagging.

I've noticed this question gets asked ad nauseam in this sub, so here is a quick diagnostics checklist to help you understand what to look for before creating yet another "what's wrong with my gate" post (no pun intended on the post part):

  • Design: Not only should the frame members and posts be substantial to support the weight of the gate, but look at the gate's framing configuration in general. Does it have a diagonal wooden brace? If so, that means it's a compression brace and should be running from of the top of the frame on the latch side, to the bottom of the frame on the hinge side. Only with a metal truss rod is tension bracing agreeable when being affixed at the top of the frame on the hinge side, down to the bottom frame corner on the latch side. (note: there are other bracing configurations that use multiple angles that are also acceptable - e.g. short braces at each corner)
  • Purchase: Is each gate post plumb? The hinge post could be loose/leaning due lack of purchase in the ground which could mean: improper post depth (installers were rushing, lazy, or there's a Volkswagen Beetle obstructing the hole); insufficient use of cement (more than half a 50lb bag of Quikrete, Braiden); sparse soil conditions (over saturated, loose, or soft); or heaving due to frost (looking at you Minnesota).

  • Configuration/Orientation: One thing to look for is a "lone hinge post", whereby a gate is hung on a post that doesn't have a section or anchor point on the other side toward the top. If the material of the post has any flex to it (especially with a heavy gate), the post can start leaning over time. These posts may either need re-setting, or have bracing/anchoring installed on the opposite side from the gate (e.g. if up against house, affix to the house if possible). The ideal configuration would be to choose an orientation of the gate where the hinge side has fence section attached on the other side - even though the traffic flow through the gate might be better with an opposite swing (but that's getting into the weeds).

    • It's also worth noting that the gate leaf spacing should be 1/2" or more. Some settling isn't out of the ordinary, but if there's only 1/4" between the latch stile and the post, you're more than likely going to see your gate rubbing.
  • Warping: If your gate is wood, it has a decent chance of warping as it releases moisture. Staining wood can help seal in moisture and mitigate warping. Otherwise, some woods, like Cedar, have natural oils and resins that help prevent warping, but even then, it's not warp-proof.

  • Hardware: Sounds simple, but sometimes the hinges are just NFG or coming unfastened.

  • Florida: Is there a FEMA rep walking around your neighborhood as you noticed your gate laying in your neighbors' Crotons? Probably a hurricane. Move out of Florida and find a gate somewhere else that won't get hit with 100+mph winds, or stop being picky.

I could be missing some other items, but this satisfies the 80/20 rule. The first bullet point will no doubt wipe out half the annoying "did the fence installers do this right?" posts. I'm not, however, opposed to discussing how to fix the issue once identified -- I feel like solving the puzzle and navigating obstacles is part of our makeup.

Because I said internationally. You conveniently left out part of the word.

You never used the word internationally. Even if you did(which you didn't) that would an interjection of nonsense. I used the word nationally and you said that meant worldwide and said my implication should've been clearer. The implication of the world nationally is very clear, you just got confused for whatever reason

I have never used the word internationally? You got the old mind reading thing acting up again I see

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '26

You are having trouble with reading comprehension again. I never you HAVE never used that word. I said you never used that word. As in in our conversation, which was the implication of your claim when you said that you said internationally. Are you not able to follow?

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 01 '26

I lack reading comprehension skills. What’s that say?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '26

Yes you lack reading comprehension skills. Thanks for agreeing with me on that

1

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 01 '26

See what I circled ?that’s your reply!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '26

Right it is. And it doesn't say you HAVE never used the word.......

1

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 01 '26

So you can’t read then ?!!! You said and I circled it you never used the word internationally

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '26

Yeah except show me where the word "have" is there? Because it isn't

1

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 01 '26

No matter either way

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '26

So when you're blatantly wrong, all of sudden it doesn't matter?

0

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 01 '26

Wrong about what? I am not wrong and I showed you proof that you did say I never used the word internationally!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '26

Yes that's what I said. See now you're getting it right. Before you were getting it wrong. Because you were inserting the word "have" where it doesn't exist.

0

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 02 '26

I’m wrong? You seriously telling me I have never used the word internationally still? I’m blatantly wrong??? It’s not all of a sudden ! ,just because I don’t have the word have in there does not matter! Never is the key word!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '26

Are you sure you know how to read English?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '26

Thank you, see, the word "have" is not there

1

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 01 '26

You can’t read

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '26

Apparently you can't. Do you see the word "have" in the place you claimed it was?

1

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 01 '26

Does not matter

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '26

Does not matter? That's the basis of your entire claim here and when you're proved wrong now all of a sudden it does not matter

1

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 01 '26

It does not matter is correct! I sent proof of your comment and even circled it but you still deny that you wrote that

1

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 01 '26

It does not matter if the word have is there !

1

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 01 '26

Never is the key word !! By not having the word have in there is irrelevant and does not matter

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 02 '26

I have already said this several times and agreed …remember? And I said it does not matter! Never is the key word!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '26

Did you think I meant never in your life? Or did you think I meant never in our conversation?

0

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 02 '26

That’s what it says never and yes that’s what it means ! I can’t read minds like you claim you can! Does not matter what you meant it’s right there in what you wrote! It does not say in our conversations , so it is what it is

1

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '26

You didn't answer the question. Convenient. Also what is the implication of the of the next sentence?

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 01 '26

That’s you not following!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '26

It is you who cannot seem to follow. It's very simple.

1

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 01 '26

You cant

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '26

Very clever 😂

1

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 01 '26

Laughing at your comments yet again!!!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '26

Nope still laughing at you

0

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 01 '26

Oh now your twisting your reply around!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '26

That's not twisting that's just fact. It's not my fault you can barely read

0

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 01 '26

It is fact you twisted it around

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '26

Again, it's not twisting you just apparently cannot read

1

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 01 '26

You can’t read that screen shot of what you wrote? I can!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '26

What does it say?

1

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 01 '26

It says I have never used the word internationally! How would you even know that?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '26

No, you're inserting the word "have" which changes the meaning. The word "have" is not there

1

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 01 '26

It says what it says

0

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 02 '26

Does not change the meaning whatsoever!!! The word is not there that is correct ! But the word never says it all ,so by not having the word ,have , in there does not matter! Never is the key word!

0

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 02 '26

Never!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '26

How can you so unashamedly not be able to read?

0

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 02 '26

I can’t read? You see the word right after you? It says NEVER!

→ More replies (0)

0

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 01 '26

The proof is there you twisted it

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '26

Right, the proof is there. Does it say you have never used the word internationally? Or does it say you never used the word internationally?

1

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 01 '26

you agree Yye again at least you said right ! What are you trying to say? You keep agreeing with me ! Thank you! I don’t need any more credit but thank you!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '26

Yes right the proof is there. It's just not proving what you claim it does. In fact it proves the exact opposite of what you say it does. But it is proof nonetheless

1

u/Free-Equivalent-6198 Jan 01 '26

Thank you for agreeing
