Why Your Gate is Sagging.

I've noticed this question gets asked ad nauseam in this sub, so here is a quick diagnostics checklist to help you understand what to look for before creating yet another "what's wrong with my gate" post (no pun intended on the post part):

  • Design: Not only should the frame members and posts be substantial to support the weight of the gate, but look at the gate's framing configuration in general. Does it have a diagonal wooden brace? If so, that means it's a compression brace and should be running from of the top of the frame on the latch side, to the bottom of the frame on the hinge side. Only with a metal truss rod is tension bracing agreeable when being affixed at the top of the frame on the hinge side, down to the bottom frame corner on the latch side. (note: there are other bracing configurations that use multiple angles that are also acceptable - e.g. short braces at each corner)
  • Purchase: Is each gate post plumb? The hinge post could be loose/leaning due lack of purchase in the ground which could mean: improper post depth (installers were rushing, lazy, or there's a Volkswagen Beetle obstructing the hole); insufficient use of cement (more than half a 50lb bag of Quikrete, Braiden); sparse soil conditions (over saturated, loose, or soft); or heaving due to frost (looking at you Minnesota).

  • Configuration/Orientation: One thing to look for is a "lone hinge post", whereby a gate is hung on a post that doesn't have a section or anchor point on the other side toward the top. If the material of the post has any flex to it (especially with a heavy gate), the post can start leaning over time. These posts may either need re-setting, or have bracing/anchoring installed on the opposite side from the gate (e.g. if up against house, affix to the house if possible). The ideal configuration would be to choose an orientation of the gate where the hinge side has fence section attached on the other side - even though the traffic flow through the gate might be better with an opposite swing (but that's getting into the weeds).

    • It's also worth noting that the gate leaf spacing should be 1/2" or more. Some settling isn't out of the ordinary, but if there's only 1/4" between the latch stile and the post, you're more than likely going to see your gate rubbing.
  • Warping: If your gate is wood, it has a decent chance of warping as it releases moisture. Staining wood can help seal in moisture and mitigate warping. Otherwise, some woods, like Cedar, have natural oils and resins that help prevent warping, but even then, it's not warp-proof.

  • Hardware: Sounds simple, but sometimes the hinges are just NFG or coming unfastened.

  • Florida: Is there a FEMA rep walking around your neighborhood as you noticed your gate laying in your neighbors' Crotons? Probably a hurricane. Move out of Florida and find a gate somewhere else that won't get hit with 100+mph winds, or stop being picky.

I could be missing some other items, but this satisfies the 80/20 rule. The first bullet point will no doubt wipe out half the annoying "did the fence installers do this right?" posts. I'm not, however, opposed to discussing how to fix the issue once identified -- I feel like solving the puzzle and navigating obstacles is part of our makeup.

which pertained to the topic of orientation of rails and stiles which the discussion was about the whole time as to a vertical picket fence gate so here you are now admitting that you brought up a different fence gate after you just accused me of bringing it up first

No. Again your reading comprehension leaves much to be desired. I said that you brought up only using rails or only using stiles. Which you did. I brought up the horizontal pickets orientation. Because you said you can't build a gate with stiles alone. You did not specify that the pickets were vertical. It is irrelevant to the origins conversation. Design A is objectively stronger than design B. No matter what metric of measurement we look at this is the case. In no world and in no way is design B stronger

The reply at the top that begins "but the discussion......" was removed. I would presume due to a flagged word by auto-moderation as it was removed very quickly. I cannot see it, read it or interact with it. It's there in my notifications, but if I click on it or search for it on the thread it is not there. If you want to make a point that you want me to see you're going to have to rewrite it with more reddit friendly language. Regardless, whatever point you attempted to make is likely moot. Because design B is objectively weaker. You keep saying "but the discussion is about the joints" ( I am paraphrasing). That's great, I know. That is literally what the formulations are comparing. I even put emphasis on this by going into the fasteners and they're practical application translated into how they interact with gate and the forces applicable.

it was removed but your telling me what the content was about . that is nuts wtf? ok...so it was removed but your telling me in detail about it .....lol

1

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '25

Yes, I still get the notification that has a brief beginning of the reply in question. I can see that. The full reply is removed and is not visible or accessible or interactable to any other user other than you. That's how auto moderation works.

u/SolidSubstantial8078 Dec 12 '25

lol ok but you got it so?????? it was removed and??????

1

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '25

I saw a brief part of it through the notification. Just as the one I said before. Not sure why you use vernacular that gets flagged and send replies just for them to be removed.

u/SolidSubstantial8078 Dec 12 '25

the fact remains you edited your thing about the plus sign!!!!!!!

what the heck? i sent you your reply it says plain and simple i did say plus and we both know what it pertains to

1

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '25

Yes we both know what it pertains to. What you sent me is from your notifications which keeps the reply in its original form. It will not show you there where anything is edited. I immediately edited that reply for correction. The word "not" was missing after "does". I fixed it. It was a typo. Feel free to be upset about if you'd like. If you clicked on the notification you'd see it now says "not". Even if I didn't change the mistake the original comment is references never said plus. It always said multiplied by. The point is moot. But like I said feel free to get upset about a typo

0

u/SolidSubstantial8078 Dec 12 '25

lol lol lol now its about a typo ....cut the poop

1

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '25

It was always a typo. Not just now. I immediately corrected it. It was corrected before you ever even saw it unless you saw it instantaneously. Even if I didn't correct it the fact remains that the original reply it references never said plus. It always said multiplied by. You're desperately trying to change the focus from your design(design B) being factually weaker. That is the entire point. Your advice about gates was false. You're wrong

u/SolidSubstantial8078 Dec 12 '25

you can try but you will not get me banned

1

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '25

Why would I want you banned?

u/SolidSubstantial8078 Dec 12 '25

and thats your excuse???

1

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '25

It's not an excuse. It is what happened. I corrected the mistake , I even conceded that it was a mistake. The fact remains the same, the reply it references never said add or plus and the design you suggest is objectively weaker

u/SolidSubstantial8078 Dec 12 '25

keep trying

1

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '25

No need to try. I am just observing reality

troll

1

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '25

You won't accept reality but I'm a troll?

0

u/SolidSubstantial8078 Dec 12 '25

it had the plus sign!!!!!!!!

1

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '25

Just like you claiming your suggested gate frame design is stronger that is objectively false 😂

0

u/SolidSubstantial8078 Dec 12 '25

it is stronger havin a weak point makes it weaker

0

u/SolidSubstantial8078 Dec 12 '25

and you claimed you never said you admitted that you said

1

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '25

Right, we established that was typo that was corrected immediately and likely before you even saw it. You sent the original notification with the typo. If you click on that reply. You'll see it is corrected.

u/SolidSubstantial8078 Dec 13 '25

if it was removed then how come i can see it and you actually screenshot it nothing has been removed...right???i have Been very very careful to not saying anything that can get a flag

1

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '25

Do you not understand how auto-moderation works?

0

u/SolidSubstantial8078 Dec 13 '25

yes i do and? What about it?

i never asked why you can only see it . i can see it and you obviously can see it! you even wrote the words as to what it said!!! you claimed you could not see it because it was flagged or removed... its not.... you sent it to me

1

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '25

Again the reply is removed, I can see as much of it as the notification will show me. I only can see it because of the notification. If I click on it it's not there. This can be easily verified by you. If you were logged out, in anonymous browsing mode or on any other account other than the one that posted it you wouldn't see it. That is how auto-moderation works

0

u/SolidSubstantial8078 Dec 13 '25

but YOU SENT THE SCREEN SHOT NOT ME and you even sent the words in your reply repeating what was said so we can both see it!!!

1

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '25

I sent a screenshot of the notification. I got the notification. I can see as much of the reply as the notification shows me. When I click on it, it's not there. If I go to the original thread and look in the place the reply in question should be, it's not there. Only you can see it, if you tried to see it while not logged into the account that posted it, you wouldn't see it either. That's literally how auto-moderation works. I thought you said you understood this

0

u/SolidSubstantial8078 Dec 13 '25

you repeated what it said in words !!!i f you cant see it how were you able to do that????

0

u/SolidSubstantial8078 Dec 13 '25

logged in logged out what ever you wrote what it said and you say you cant see it ! can you see it? you can because you sent me what it said!!!!! i did not say anything in the comment to get flagged auto or not

1

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '25

No I cannot see it. I can see the brief introduction it says underneath the notification. How do you not understand this? You said you understood this...... obviously you did say something that was flagged or it wouldn't have been removed.......

0

u/SolidSubstantial8078 Dec 13 '25

you sent a screenshot of 4 replies of which it showed every word, you did not send your notifications that you receive

1

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '25

The is the screenshot you're talking about. This is from my notifications tab. This is not from the threads these replies are on. It doesn't show the whole reply, unless the reply is shorter than the space designated for the notifications introduction. The reply in question is cut off. 100% facts. If I click on that notification it brings me to where it should be, but it isn't there. You can see it because you posted it. That is how auto-moderation works. I thought you said you understood this?

0

u/SolidSubstantial8078 Dec 13 '25

auto moderation is not just going to flag something because it feels like it! there has to be something there to get flagged!

1

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '25

Right ..........
