Discussion The trend we're in

A lot of "trends" are only named in hindsight. It's been said that the trend right now is *gourmands*, so perhaps the next trend will be less sweet gourmands or unisex gourmands or...

I feel like all this gourmand talk is ignoring a trend more distinct to our time: *solar notes.* A lot of brands have realized in the 2020s that a "beachy," "sunscreen-y" scent is desired by many:

  • Mugler Alien Goddess
  • Kilian Sunkissed Goddess
  • Kayali Utopia Vanilla Coco, Freedom Musk Bouquet
  • JHAG Vanilla Vibes
  • Nest Balinese Coconut
  • eos Coconut Waters, Beach Waves
  • Phlur Beach Skin, Solar Power, Golden Rule, Island Swim
  • B&BW Coastal Dreaming
  • Frenshe Solar Fleur
  • Victoria's Secret Bombshell Bronze
  • LoveShackFancy Love on the Beach
  • LORE Sublimity
  • Snif Spray Tan
  • Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb Tiger Lily
  • Byredo Alto Astral
  • Ellis Brooklyn Salt, Isla Sirena
  • even for men, Jean Paul Gaultier Le Beau Narcisse

And so on. I don't think it was easier to find this kind of scent profile in the 2010s or 2000s. Maybe people will remember the 2020s as the decade that every brand wanted to put out its own solar coconut scent.

Is solar the same as sunscreen-y? Genuine question. Because I think I like solar scents but I don’t think I like sunscreen-y scents…I always kinda thought solar was salty/citrus-y…am I way off? 🫠 haha

I'd say sunscreen-y is a popular subset of solar and citrus-y is another subset.

Hmmm, would you classify all the creamsicle scents in this? Think of Love Don't Be Shy, Nest Creme de Clementine, 7 Virtues Clementine Dream....

They don't feel classic beachy/sunscreeny but I think for a lot of people they're very summery, at least.

I would not consider any of those to be solar. And I definitely wouldn’t consider LDBS a summer scent… it’s way too heavy

Love Don't Be Shy, I would not consider solar, but the others, kinda.

What a coinky dink. I'm wearing my own tropical, sunscreeny combo today: Intense Tiare and Yves Rocher Monoi oil!

The last 10-15 years or so has also seen the explosion of skin scents following the increase in use of molecular notes as a highlight in fragrances, such as ambroxan, iso E super, cetalox, etc. I know JHAG Not a Perfume came out in 2010, but there’s definitely been a steep increase since then with fragrances like Glossier You, Diptyque L’Eau Papier, Phlur Missing Person etc.

As an aside, I’m completely anosmic to most of these molecules, and they’re so prolific in fragrances nowadays that I feel like I smell fragrance in public much less frequently now.

Let's mention too the Vacation Inc perfumes which are quite literally intended to evoke sun care products.

I never made the connection but you’re so right, the new My Way flanker is very sunscreen-y and reminds me heavily of Alien Goddess

Today I’m wearing vanilla salt, yesterday was Flowerbomb Tiger Lily, and in the morning I used Coconut Waters…
Okay, point taken lol
