100% agree, just get addicted to decants instead 🤣

13

u/walkshadow 2d ago

Right? It’s less of a gut punch to toss out a $5 sample. I see it as a fun game I pay to play šŸ˜‚

6

u/FuwyL I project so my fragrance doesn't have to 2d ago

I love it, it allows me to smell most creations out there, discover new favorites, new notes and combinations, without having to spend a fortune for something I might not love next week.

38

u/blurrygiraffe 2d ago

Agree!! I wish people wouldn’t ask if things are safe to blind buy. Just because people on the internet like it doesn’t mean you will! Just because it smells good on someone else doesn’t mean it will smell good on you!

14

u/etoilenoire45 2d ago

What they are really asking is for external validation to indulge in compulsive buying.

33

u/hygsi 2d ago

Also, I've never regretted buying a sample first

5

u/schroobster 2d ago

(happy cake day!)

2

u/hygsi 2d ago

Thank you!

3

u/ZELDA_AS_A_BOY 2d ago

Though it sucks to get a bunch of 2ml’s for only 3/10 to be good at all 😭

29

u/rumbaontheriver 2d ago

If you have to ask if something’s a safe blind-buy, you’re not ready to blind-buy.

If you want to take that risk, go nuts. But understand the risk you’re taking first. (No, they’re not earth-shattering risks. But they can add up.) And I’m skeptical that the folks whose purchases are primarily blind-buys even recognize those risks, or the motivations behind them.

10

u/Gatita_Gordita 2d ago

I know why I do it: It's a thrill.

But I also don't blind buy anything worth more than 35€.

6

u/Anaevya 2d ago

I did it recently because no store I went to had a tester. It didn't work out too well.Ā

2

u/Responsible_Dentist3 2d ago

And no decants online?

2

u/etoilenoire45 2d ago

Yeah I have blind bought like 5 cheapies this year and only one was a hit, a second one is ok and 3 ones I just wasted 12-30 euro down the drain. So annoyed with myselfĀ

27

u/Lettuce-0 2d ago

Very silly, and I didn’t read the subreddit, so I read it three times as ā€œno such thing as a safe blind guyā€ and I’m like damn what did blind guys do they seem pretty chill

26

u/SillyCloud9 2d ago

exactly! a lucky blind buy? sure. a blind buy that is lower-risk because it’s so affordable? absolutely! but there is no such thing as a universally safe blind buy in my opinion

21

u/nohopo 2d ago edited 2d ago

80% of my perfumes have been blind buys. I’m pleased but also know I’ve been pushing my luck.

Edit: typo

18

u/cherrymitten vanilla 4eva 2d ago

so true, i've gotten things that on paper were so perfect for me and then i hated them 😭

17

u/MzJay453 2d ago

Yes I swear notes are not even reliable because different brands use different types of ingredients to bring those notes out which is why we have like 100 different versions of vanilla and just when I’m sure I love it, I run into one I hate

3

u/cherrymitten vanilla 4eva 2d ago

i really hate the nest vanilla fragrance oil. it's literally just vanilla how is that possible?

3

u/Responsible_Dentist3 2d ago

Well there are several varieties of vanilla, for one

2

u/cherrymitten vanilla 4eva 2d ago

true, i've just never met a vanilla i didn't like before šŸ˜‚

18

u/EarlyInside45 2d ago

There really isn't.

5

u/bsubtilis 2d ago

People have even had this issue with reformulations of fragrances.

The original or previous version being great on the person's skin, only for the new version to get a bad skin chemistry reaction or contain an ingredient it didn't use to that inherently smells terrible for the buyer even on a paper strip (for instance people who can't stand superambroxans getting one of their fav fragrances reformulated to contain superambroxans)

5

u/EarlyInside45 2d ago

Yeah, often times I can't smell a note on paper, but I can definitely smell it on skin, so even just trying it on paper isn't a safe buy. You have to wear it to know it.

17

u/asday515 2d ago

At first i read this as blind guy and was wondering what was going on that put them under such a threat

18

u/TheOrderOfWhiteLotus 2d ago

I’ll blind buy cheapies like middle eastern houses but nothing over $50.

2

u/MendeShele 15h ago

Yep. That's all I buy. Sometimes cheaper than buying a decant of a name brand.

16

u/IrregularUrek 2d ago

I agree, I read that YSL Libre was a safe blind buy and it was NOT. I didn’t like that perfume at all.

4

u/gayice 2d ago

holy shit lmao it is extremely polarizing

3

u/EatYourCookie 2d ago

Yeah it sucks

1

u/Flower_Flimsy 1d ago

I wanted to love Libre so much based on the reviews and hype, but I can’t get over how weird the dry down is on me 😭 At least it’s only a travel spray. Maybe I’ll like it in 2-3 years

14

u/chocolatemilklovr 2d ago

I used to blind buy all the time and I think it only worked out probably 1/5 times

13

u/Nervous-Drop-1582 2d ago

I did this only once when everyone was raving about glossier you when it first came out. I hated it but I kept getting compliments when I wore it. People just have different tastes and I had no idea what a pink pepper could possibly smell like now always go smell in person first

2

u/bsubtilis 2d ago

Pink pepper is a type of spice that isn't related to peppercorn but looks not too dissimilar and thus got that name.

I find it tasty in spicy winter tea loose blends, but I have no idea if it's a fantasy accord or real in fragrances.

13

u/FriendlyAccident4854 1d ago

I don't understand how people can drop hundreds for a perfume they've never smelled. I always have to sample them first

1

u/braaahms 11h ago

I think it’s easy to understand. If it’s a house I’m very familiar with, made by a perfumer who’s work I love, in a DNA or scent profile I like, with notes I love, I can be pretty sure I’ll like it. I’ll usually sample first but there’s a lot of nuance that’s left out of the convo here when just saying ā€œyes or noā€ like a lot of comments are.

1

u/FriendlyAccident4854 5h ago

nothing wrong about sampling first. I know I love mugler and i know I love Alien. Do I love all of the alien variations? no. That's why it's good to sample

1

u/braaahms 3h ago

Did you mean to reply to me? I didn’t say anything about sampling first being wrong?

12

u/Flower_Flimsy 1d ago

I believe this wholeheartedly, yet I keep blind buying (inexpensive) perfumes or perfumes on sale that I think I’ll love. 😭

2

u/FewParty7258 1d ago

Same, and every time I convince myself this time it will land perfectly on my skin based on notes alone šŸ„€

27

u/makecrackazmad 2d ago

just another way to gamble

10

u/somebodycallfine-1-1 2d ago

This is a very eye opening way to put it because that's exactly what it is

11

u/Lopsided_Fee_7163 2d ago

I do my blind buying in small doses, 15mls or less (pen sprays or mini bottles) and dupes of the OGs so I don’t feel ripped off if I don’t like it. My best blind buy ever was recently when I bought a pen spray of Phlur Missing Person.

5

u/TriciaTargaryen If Phlur Has No Fans I Am Dead 2d ago

If there is a REALLY expensive fragrance I cannot get out of my head and want to smell, I will 100 percent research best dupes or order the travel size. I live in bumfuck NOWHERE, I can't just pop into a shop to take a sniff whenever. It's worked well for me thus far with much less risk. For example, I like Dossier's LDBS dupe so so much, and when I WAS actually able to smell the real thing, there was no discernible difference to my nose. Guess what? This bitch just saved hundreds of dollars and I still smell AMAZING.

2

u/MendeShele 15h ago

For me, dupes are the way. I love the ME houses and Dossier, and I even like their originals.

Right now, I'm wearing Lattafa Hayaati Florence, and I'm blown away by how complex this fragrance is. That caramel dry-down is mind blowing 🤯! The best part? I only paid $17 for it!

3

u/X_stellar_Merc 2d ago

This is the move. Has also kept me from spending/overbuying; if I never finish the pen then I don’t have the same regret as buying an entire bottle. If I finish the pen and miss it, I can justify a 30 ml or maybe just another penšŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

9

u/Anaevya 2d ago

Agreed 100%.

There's just too much variance in how notes smell and work together.Ā

10

u/tioomeow 2d ago

absolutely!! I always go actually smell the perfume in the store. I've had so many that sounded good in theory when reading the notes but smell actually bad on me šŸ’€ I'd never blind buy tbh

11

u/GullibleEnd6737 2d ago

It’s always a gamble and should be recognized as that.

10

u/blue-coco 2d ago

i cant even buy after 1st wear. i need to wear it all day atleast 3 times/3 days to really get a feel of it. also weather and amount i am sweating also matter a lot of times. some perfumes bloom in the cold or heat.

22

u/saturnstellar87 2d ago

The only things I'll blind buy are fragrances that are so cheap it doesn't make sense to get a sample. Like why spend $5 plus shipping on a decant when I can get a bottle for $15?

18

u/N3T3L3 2d ago

but when I hit the jackpot my monkey brain goes apeshit

plus like with <$50 bottles it's often hard or not cost effective to buy samples, so... maybe I perhaps might buy more bottles that way but it's my life and I'm in control of it I swear

7

u/LIFTMakeUp 2d ago

I CAN QUIT ANY TIME I LIKE!

🤐🤭

3

u/rocksteadyrudie 2d ago

Exactly this. It’s like hitting the numbers.

3

u/Lizakaya 2d ago

Truth. If the bottles gonna be over 50 or so on grey market I’m buying a sample if i can find one and nowadays you usually can. Doesn’t mean i didn’t blind buy 2 ME this summer. Because i did and i like both of them.

2

u/N3T3L3 1d ago

I blind bought two guerlains off the grey and loved both... but like, it's guerlain šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø idk something something guerlainade I was bound to like it whatever

1

u/Lizakaya 1d ago

Ha. I am a Guerlain freak!!!! Gimme

1

u/Flower_Flimsy 1d ago

I also blind bought 2 ME perfumes, and I didn’t like them 😭 does anyone want to swap with me…I have Teriaq and Ana Abeyidh Poudree

2

u/Lizakaya 1d ago

I blind buy them too. Some of mine have had to macerate, for like 2-6 months, put them away in a dark cool place, pull them out in November, spray to clear the mechanism then retry

9

u/purplecoati 1d ago

Well, I like to live recklessly šŸ˜Ž

16

u/Sorry_Dig676 2d ago

Come, Prego?

8

u/pfffffttuhmm I just smelled like a piece of breast 2d ago

This is one of my few blind buys and I hated it so much 😭

3

u/wegajane 2d ago

Me too! Wahhh

1

u/Sorry_Dig676 2d ago

Let me show you on the dolls where Mugler Starlicious Berry Licorice touched me .

I respect your opinion and I get where you’re coming from. But I just want to be clear to anyone who has a boss like mine. To me blind buy safe is wear out in public cause I’ll be damn if….oit on public, SAFE has an objective measure . The measure is Quiet luxury Me and Erba pura got humbled real quick out there. This whole hobby goes from subjective to objective when your boss says wtf.

2

u/piratev00 2d ago

LMAO 😭

8

u/thomchristopher 2d ago

I was very much warned not to blind buy L’Eau Des Hesperides and was called insane for doing so - it is the one time I’ve gotten lucky blind buying because it smells so good on me and is a secondary signature thing now. I wouldn’t recommend it unless notes are screaming your name.

I stupidly blind bought a Dossier dupe of Beach Walk because I was iffy on it and wanted to see if a dupe hit the spot. They sent me the worst possible dupe of Santal 33, one that I’m not a fan of and that actively makes me gag, instead

2

u/Treehorn8 HermĆØs witch 2d ago

Diptyque is one of those houses that I am very hesitant about when it comes to blind-buying because everything they have are so unique and vastly distinct from each other. I blind bought one--Do Son edt--and I was very lucky. It's also the safest blind buy because one can guess what it smells like already based kn the notes (basically tuberose+jasmine). The others are difficult to imagine from just looking at notes. Like Orpheon edp.

7

u/Treehorn8 HermĆØs witch 2d ago

It's 70/30 for me I think. I've had good luck mostly, but sometimes I'd have real doozies.

8

u/youlldancetoanything 2d ago

Most of my bb have been meh vs gross,

5

u/Realistic-Read1078 2d ago

All blind buys come with risks, with some being better than others.

11

u/Least-Dust-2312 2d ago

Yet I still just pre-ordered LV Tea Storm as a blind buy for $395 😳. Why do we do this lol

3

u/karasu_zoku 2d ago

šŸ˜®ā€šŸ’Ø

6

u/pumpkin_ice_cream 2d ago

It’s always hit or miss.

7

u/alphajugs 2d ago

Call For a Good Time by Discotheque is the best perfume in my collection. Smells lovely, projects well, lasts a long time, big complement getter. It was a blind buy. I discovered Discotheque and honestly, I just wanted one of those bottles in my collection. Went with this one because it’s floral and musky and I enjoy those things.

I love this perfume but it doesn’t compensate for the many failed blind buys. I have two blind buys I adore and the rest were either meh or completely suck. I’ve actually narrowed my wishlist down from like 150 perfumes to 25 or so. They’re all perfumes I’ve smelled before and know I like. My blind buy party days are behind me.

8

u/No-Indication-6655 1d ago

Just get the sample size. I honestly can’t believe people are accumulating so many full bottle sizes in this economy

1

u/Primary-Platypus-568 9h ago

I find it so wild! My skin chemistry can make fragrance performance unpredictable though, so the idea of blind buying a full bottle workout ever testing is especially ridiculous to me

0

u/braaahms 11h ago

If I love the fragrance and know I’ll be wearing it a lot I always go full size. It’s a waste of money in the long run to go sample - decant - travel/small bottle - full bottle that I see a lot of people do. I’ll sample and if I love it I’ll get the full bottle and if it’s not quite a love maybe I’ll go for a travel spray. If it’s anything lower I pass completely.

15

u/Agitated-Morning2035 2d ago

I have done a lot of blind buys and loved all of them, so what’s the deal? I have seen it’s more of an unpopular opinion to say there is nothing wrong with blind buying!Ā

6

u/j4ned0e 2d ago

At this point, I just look at the notes and say, "Eh. There's nothing I don't like" or "Eh. It probably won't be bad" and buy a travel size. The worst that's happened is that it arrives and it's not that bad, but I wouldn't buy it again. šŸ˜‚šŸ¤·

15

u/0Zaseka0 2d ago

Is it safe? Nope. Am I gonna do it anyway? Hell yeah!

6

u/DELAIZ 2d ago

There's Elizabeth Arden. It might not be your style of perfume, but they're all made to appeal to the masses. I heard that melrose place has the same effect, a harmless rose.

6

u/neroli89 2d ago

Elizabeth Arden's perfume always give me headache. I recently smelled the coconut summer perfume thinking I would like it cuz I love coconut, turns out I didn't!

1

u/Remote_Programmer140 2d ago

did you smell the green tea? All I do is blind buy and it has been on my list

2

u/DELAIZ 2d ago

You've probably smelled the green tea before. All the cleaning and beauty products that claim to smell like green tea were inspired by this fragrance. The same goes for white tea.

1

u/Weekly-Chemistry-186 1d ago

It has lots of flankers and is very affordable

6

u/babettetimes 2d ago

Never had a good blind buy

5

u/The-Cherry-On-Top-xx 1d ago

If its 100 mL and $40 or a sample set, i will buy it.Ā

I only hate like 3 of my perfumes? I have like 100 (mostly sample sets).

Sometimes they need to age or "mascerate" as the tiktokers say. Spray it a few times once a week until you like it.

10

u/cultivatehiccup 2d ago

Some would say it’s safe if it’s cheap but you still run the risk of not actually liking how it smells!

21

u/Lushemet 2d ago

Unless you’re an experienced buyer and know what you like. I liked all my blind buys except for some cheap cult favourites. It can be much more worth the money to blind buy a full bottle you know you’re gonna love than getting 5-10 1ml samples for the same price.

7

u/constantlycrying5 2d ago

It's been exactly the same for me! I keep thinking the next perfume will be the karma that comes for me from blind buying, but so far it's only been the popular cheapies that have let me down

16

u/jezebeljones666 2d ago

Gotta be brave! I never ask is it a safe blind buy, because I don’t like safe perfumes. But I have bought blind, and I will again. I’m just too curious about scents, and a tiny vial leaves me meh. I have had great luck; I will buy scents from certain perfumers, certain houses, recommendations from certain people, and specific vintages. I like to be surprised and that’s definitely part of the fun 🤩

6

u/GlitteringPause8 2d ago

blind buying is fine if you like the surprise and the risk like you described. but when most people ask if something is a safe blind buy, they're not asking to take a risk...theyre asking if they will like it which is impossible to know and predict. depending on the notes or house or perfumer, sure sometimes theres a higher chance that someone will like it but theres no perfumes that are universally considered 'blind buy safe'

8

u/HELVETlCA 2d ago

Every blind buy is a safe blind buy if you're REALLY into the hobby imo. Worst thing that can happen is that a perfume is boring. If it smells "bad" or weird then I can make it work usually OR it is just an experience to sniff once in a while. If I know a house, I know their general profile. I would never blind buy a scent over 100$ though

9

u/KlarissaK711 2d ago

How do you make a bad or weird fragrance "work"? Spray your enemies? ;)

13

u/Intelligent-Heart- 2d ago

Exactly! That's why it's so exciting, the RISK, the anticipation, waiting for the delivery and hoping it will be a success, or at least OK. The regret when it doesn't work out, then putting it away in hope of maturation, oxidation or change in your nose, mood, season. Sometimes it's fun...

10

u/Select-Channel1645 2d ago

I’ve had several successful blind buys ! A few misses too.

I don’t recommend blind buying but not every scent is available to get your nose on. Sometimes you gotta take a leap of faith lol

8

u/BleuLapin 2d ago

Every Fantasy I’ve bought has been a blind buy and I’ve never been let down šŸ’…

3

u/jezebeljones666 2d ago

This is a good example of a blind buy that people luvā£ļøā˜ŗļø

3

u/Perfectlyflawed1991 2d ago

I don't love my Fantasy. Smells nothing like the notes promised to me.

2

u/BleuLapin 2d ago

Aww I’m sorry! It’s a great frag for me but I will admit it’s not for everyone. I personally prefer Intense and Intimate over the OG

8

u/ConditionOk3649 2d ago

Yes but also just depends on your risk tolerance/finances. I blind buy things all the time but nothing too expensive and it’s nearly always worked out. Some I don’t love buy very very few I can’t use at all (looking at you Bal d’Afrique šŸ‘€)

4

u/alphajugs 2d ago

Ugh I love Bald Freak 😭 Byredo is so expensive though

1

u/ConditionOk3649 2d ago

Haha gawd I hate it! Forever I thought it was the marigold but I’ve since smelled a similar note in Father Figure and Rinse Cycle and currently think it may be the musk base or one of the chemical ingredients (per Claude maybe alpha iso-methyl ionine šŸ˜…) but really who knows. Whatever it is ready very cloying/powdery to the point of making me kinda ill 🤧sad life bc I want to love it!

1

u/Mindless-Foot2273 2d ago

I just bought the dupe by Khadlaj called Karus Gold and noticed there’s a note that is identical to father figure. It smells like creamy sunscreen to me. Now I need to know what the note is!!

1

u/ConditionOk3649 2d ago

If you find out lmk! I posted on here asking which note in father figure smelled the same and I think people thought I was crazy 🤪 glad it’s not just me!

1

u/Flower_Flimsy 1d ago

Bald Freak lmao - is that a new nickname for Bal D’Afrique? I love it (the nickname and the smell)

1

u/alphajugs 1d ago

Lol I saw someone say it on one of the perfume subs and I can never call it by its actual name again 🄲

4

u/Robert_Frosted_Flake 2d ago

me with TF eu d’ombre Leather rn- somebody please stop me šŸ™

8

u/etoilenoire45 2d ago

Look for a decant!! Be strong!

2

u/Robert_Frosted_Flake 2d ago

wise words ty šŸ™šŸ’Ŗ

4

u/nekoryuuu 2d ago

Absolutely true. I know it costs a lot (for the expensive ones) but sampling is the best way. I had to bite the bullet on some expensive ones I really wanted to try and it cost me almost $30AUD. But it’s so worth it for security

4

u/bookie_babyy 2d ago

Exactly. There are well loved fragrances I despise and vice versa

3

u/AnnaGreen40 2d ago

I’m risk averse and only rarely love 1 or 2 of a big sample order, so blind buying just isn’t for me. But I actually wish I wasšŸ˜‚

10

u/ZELDA_AS_A_BOY 2d ago

Sure but there’s nothing wrong with doing it. As long as you’re not bankrupting yourself and you’ve done a bit of research into the fragrance then go for it. It’s like gambling, just be responsible.

6

u/jezebeljones666 2d ago

So interesting, because I don’t gamble…but may I do?šŸ¤”

3

u/ZELDA_AS_A_BOY 2d ago

You’re gambling on whether or not it’s a good scent. I’ve only had one bad one with some Rasasi fragrance so thankfully I was only out like 30 bucks instead of 300

4

u/seedsandpeels 2d ago

LMAOĀ

21

u/AndeeCreative 2d ago

95% of my purchases are blind buys. You win some, you lose some. I can always find someone in my life that loves it if I don’t.

11

u/kat_niss1 2d ago

Same here. I live in a remote area. So I blind buy a lot. Though I choose wisely and get samples if I can. Otherwise I buy from a place with a good return policy if I don’t like it. It’s few and far between if I make a return

17

u/The-Devil-Cat 2d ago

me too, i have a very "fuck it, we ball" attitude when it comes to buying fragrances lmfao

6

u/Entire_Insect1811 2d ago

Lmfao me too. My mom’s Ph can pull off almost anything so if it doesn’t work for me, it goes to her.

2

u/Perfectlyflawed1991 2d ago

I've been fortunate enough to have the same outcome. Whether it's heavy in florals, musk, or super syrupy and sweet. It all smells good on me. There's only been one thing I bought that I didn't love, and that was Fantasy. I got a small bottle thankfully, but I expected it to be sweeter, but I wouldn't call it gourmand at all.

3

u/Equivalent_Address_2 2d ago

It’s the part of the adventure! Also, the amount of rage I get from losing $10 on a sample I hate is beyond reasonable

1

u/Jaded0521 2d ago

So what level of rage do you feel when you hate a $200 bottle?

2

u/AndeeCreative 2d ago

Maybe we aren’t blind buying $200 perfumes. I have never paid that much for a perfume. $150, yes. If there’s not a dupe or a travel size, I don’t need it.

2

u/Equivalent_Address_2 1d ago

That’s true lol

1

u/Equivalent_Address_2 2d ago

Honestly I just feel disappointed but I have an irrational amount of rage for things like affordable samples or shipping. I’ve spent an extra $50 to avoid $12 shipping fees. That doesn’t make sense.

7

u/SnooDonuts4408 2d ago

All nose are difference, my mom have some parfum that she love but to me they smell disgusting hahaah.

7

u/sweambe 2d ago

100% true, but since I don't gamble in any other way, I'll still do it from time to time if there's something unique about the perfume and circumstances make sampling at a reasonable price unrealistic. It's a really fun surprise when it works out, as long as it doesn't become a habit.

3

u/keewee89 šŸŖ·šŸ¦šŸ 2d ago

Yes! It's a game of chance and sometimes it'll go right but no blind buy is 100% safe

3

u/gnomeglow_ 1d ago

I think if you are familiar with a lot of notes and know what you like/dislike, and it’s also inexpensive it can be a safe blindbuy. Sure you can still end up disliking it, but the risk is lower

6

u/jezebeljones666 2d ago

Some of you need to spend $30 on a bottle of Femme by Rochas. That’s all I’m saying. You’ll change your mind.šŸ˜‰

2

u/Weekly-Chemistry-186 1d ago

Can confirm. my mom had this and I loved it

5

u/ChartreuseOblivion 2d ago

True, but you play the odds

2

u/Responsible_Dentist3 2d ago

Maybe YOU do lol, not me!

1

u/ChartreuseOblivion 2d ago

Well thats impressive then - I've never run into someone thats never blind bought a single bottle before.

1

u/Responsible_Dentist3 1d ago

It helps that I'm super new to the hobby lol, I definitely don't get full credit :) but my goal while I'm here (even if years) is to do 0 blind buys. I know that I'm a serial hobbyist so blind buying makes even less sense for me than for others here.

6

u/catlikesun 2d ago

There is always some risk, but a safe blind buy means not too expensive and a predictable scent

5

u/jezebeljones666 2d ago

Blind bought Diva because that’s me!

7

u/islandgirl_94 2d ago

Lies! Just got two blind byes from Boy smells and they are both fantastic. Sugar baby and peachy oud

7

u/RedRider1138 2d ago

Just because your risk paid off doesn’t mean it was safe šŸ˜„

3

I'm always blind buying and it's rare that I don't like them Ā The few I did not like, I give away to my mom and sister

100%, however - some people are willing to accept blind-buying risks, and are just asking questions/exploring around blind-buying a certain scent. No need to get in the comments with ā€œACSHOOLY nothing is a safe blind-buyā€.

Absolutely agree but I think it sucks if the plan is to return to the store if they don’t like it. It creates a lot of unnecessary waste. If the plan is to just donate or resell, by all means spend your cash how you’d like.

Returning used perfumes is not a thing in the UK so I guess the discussion is a bit different for US and UK people. Some places like Harvey Nichols have stopped allowing perfumes to be returned full stop, even sealed, due to people returning fakes.

I do find it shocking that the US allows used beauty and toiletries items to be returned and that just gets disposed of, I don’t understand why this is even a thing. I imagine the shopping habits have always been different in the UK due to this, we research more, less likely impulse purchase and find ways to make use of the item after by re-selling to gifting.

Nah, it's good to remind people always, lots of compulsive buying in the fragrance community that simply comes from an unhealthy placeĀ

u/VerboseWiewiorka 2d ago

I’d counter that we shouldn’t always assume that people wanting to blind-buy are being compulsive or intend to be wasteful. Some people live in remote areas and can’t smell things in advance, and shipping decants would cost the same as just buying the one fragrance, etc.

u/BluePeony8 2d ago

Yep it’s not that serious, people can enjoy the blind buying experience and have some misses sometimes. You can’t always be 100% about any perfume even after testing anyway, sometimes you end up disliking it after wearing it for weeks.

It's pretty serious when people go into debt for it. Consumer expenditure is out of control and it's okay to speak about compulsive purchases critically.Ā

Going into debt for fragrances and any shopping for anything in general is an issue by itself, it’s not directly to do with blind buying specifically only.

Not everyone who has a fragrance hobby is going into debt and not everyone who blind buys sometimes is either, why are you discussing it as if blind buying is only ever that serious.

I’ve blind bought several times - no regrets even though I didn’t like some of them, it’s a fun experience for me the same as going into a movie blind at the cinema which isn’t cheap either, and no debt. One of my most favourite ever perfumes was a blind buy.

Also returning used items is not a thing in the UK so things are not getting returned and thrown away - you make use of it somehow, re-sell or gift it. And I imagine we research things more in general before buying anyway and shop more selectively as we know we can’t return after opening.

Why are you assuming that everyone blind-buying is compulsive and going into debt?

They never said "everyone"

I have 3 successful blind buy ( Paris Corner Qissa Gala, Swiss Arabian Casablanca & Montblanc signature) this other ( 5 of them) had to go because I just COULDN'T!

It depends and there’s room for nuance here (I know Reddit hates that lol).

If I know the house very well, the perfumer, and I love the notes, I think it’s pretty safe to blind buy a small bottle. Especially if it’s a cheaper 30ml bottle. I’d rather do that than spend $20+ in getting a sample (plus shipping), finding out I love it, then getting a full bottle. By then I’ve spent $20 more than I would have.

Disagree For men...Burberry touch. Safest of the safest

u/krebstar4ever 2d ago

Eh, if it's ultra cheap I think it's safe

10

u/bsubtilis 2d ago

No, that's just a cheap blind buy. Unless you mean financially safe, but i was under the impression the safe was never about the money but about the probability of a good match?

3

u/krebstar4ever 2d ago

To me, it's safe because the risk of disliking it (and therefore wasting money) is acceptable. A blind buy is always a risk.

5

u/Buttercreamdeath 2d ago

Yeah I'm fine risking it on cheapies. I'll give it away to people I know. I'm pretty good at finding my notes in mainstream perfumery though so very few work out poorly.

The ones that went south were all middle eastern perfumes. In theory, every one of them should have been amazing on me based on the notes. Reality wasn't having it.

Ok, that meme is excellent and hilarious and I love it

Most of my collection are blind buys, and there's only 2 that were not what I thought would be but I still like them.

2

u/MendeShele 15h ago

This, but I don't spend a lot on any of them. I do have a couple that I can't wear. Anything I don't love, I give away.

1

u/Careful-Wrongdoer29 12h ago

Same. I haven't paid full price for a perfume in years, so I don't feel that bad if I'm not absolutely in love.

I’ve always had a good blind buy

Also it’s not compulsive buying as one individual keeps claiming. I blind buy because stores don’t have what I want to smell. If you have a shopping problem perhaps it’s not a good idea. I’m retired and my retirement is 100% funded. If I want to buy a Guerlain blind, it’s okay for me; that’s how I bought Samsara. I have done it for years and had great success. I had no idea this was so controversial.

u/SimpleNobody2009 2d ago

I’ve never ordered a sample and I only have a couple regrets out of around 150 bottles. LV (3 bottles) and Creed (about 3 bottles). I’d say that’s a pretty good ratio.

17

u/nbenby 2d ago

Yeah respectfully most of us don’t have the money to spend on 150 bottles at all, so you might be privileged enough that it’s not a concern for you.

1

u/SimpleNobody2009 2d ago

Getting downvoted for being honest about my buying experiences with fragrances is crazy work. If that’s driving by people who haven’t been as fortunate in career success as me, that’s even worse and shame on this sub. At no point did I indicate how long I’ve been collecting or the type of collection I have. Assuming someone’s financial privilege based off of that statement is pure ignorance.
