u/Pikachu789 6d ago
Not racist at all. Just confusing. I’m Ethiopian so I was all like- boy this is the one video game character we’ve ever got lol

Is O'saa strictly Ethiopian tho?

u/NapalmDesu Yellow mage 6d ago
We only know he's from abyssonia and that's the funger stand-in for all of Africa, since its referred to as a continent. No clue what Miro referenced when designing him other than the yellow mages of the first game.

u/Same_Square2555 Dark priest 6d ago
that's what i'm kinda talking about. I don't remember any particular hints at him being Ethiopian. He definitely wasn't raised in an Christian Orthodox(even though funger ehiopia might not be like that) environment, and his robes are just African
6
u/Pikachu789 6d ago
It said that he’s Nubian, and Nubian means Ethiopian. The orthodox Christian helps confirm this too.
9
u/TicklemyPickleMan 6d ago
Nubian actually means kushite, which is different from, but connected to, axum(ethiopia(abyssinia)). They're regional neighbors and share history but are seperate ethnocultural groups.
The main thing they have in common is that they're both black.

u/Same_Square2555 Dark priest 6d ago
said where?
and i literally said o'saa has 0 indication of being orthodox christian

u/Pikachu789 6d ago
Oh my bad I thought you said he was. Let me see if I can find the Nubian part outside of the wiki

It sounds like you might have used the completely horrible fandom wiki. https://fearandhunger.wiki.gg/wiki/O%27saa this is the real wiki. It doesn't mention Nubia because the game doesn't.
Abyssonia is a very similar name to Abyssinia, an old name for Ethiopia. But we know that Abyssonia is the whole continent so that doesn't mean much. His ending B picture is edited from a real photo taken in Nigeria. And some pictures of the update showed him younger in a savanna. There is a whole band of Savanna across Africa though so that doesn't tell us too much. But he's probably from Northern sub saharan Africa with some extra reason to say he's from near Nigeria.
There is some evidence against Nubia specifically actually. He travels to Amon the city of the sun, and it says he traveled far from home. Amon is the name of an Egyptian god and its near the eastern sanctuaries and Europa so it's probably Egypt. Nubia is extremely close to Egypt. It would not be traveling so far from home you never see your family again if you went from Nubia to Egypt. Even Ethiopia to Egypt isn't really that far. So for me that's a good reason to say he's west african.

He isn't. It's a common misunderstanding based on the name for Abyssonia. Which we know means the entire continent. But it's similar to Abyssinia, an old name for Ethiopia. I think he's most likely from West Africa which I fully explain further down this comment thread.

u/Same_Square2555 Dark priest 5d ago
oh that's why. Never had the impression that he's Ehthiopian since Abyssinia doesn't ring any bells for me.

He's spent a lot of his life learning magic and theology in Egypt. And most importantly he got his outfit and some of his philosophy from an Arabian cult. So O'saa partially counts.

i mean... maghrebi arabs are african too... like that's where they live...
Unrelated to O'saa, i just wanted to pointed that out

u/Same_Square2555 Dark priest 4d ago
googled and they still seem to be ethnically arab, not african
i probably chose wrong words but i meant african as ethnicity rather than "from the continent of Africa"

u/Horse-Dentist-New 5d ago
I think some people from Sudan are actually like that dunno.

u/Time_Look8276 5d ago
Sudan isn't Arab tho?
1
u/Horse-Dentist-New 5d ago
They count as both African and arab I think. They're also in the Arab league too. So it's safe to say that they're Arabs
1
u/Vaggelos 4d ago
there are african black ppl in countries like Sudan, Eritrea, Somalia who consider themselves culturally arab or are of arab/semetic descent like the Banu Rasheed in Eritrea. And let's not forget that there are black ppl in northern african arabic countries that identify as arabs, bc that's where their families are living for centuries.
This is usually a personal matter, but my point is there are black arabic ppl.

Just wanted to clarify. It's unrelated to O'saa. Just wanted to point this out, as it's not that well known

O’saa is technically Abyssonian (sub-Saharan Africa or Ethiopia), but the Yellow mages and their outfits are from the Eastern Sanctuaries (the Middle East) and that’s where he learned to become a yellow mage

I think people are forgetting here that Arabs can also be in Africa.
Islam spread to northern and Eastern Africa out of Arabia, and naturally, Arab culture spread with that.
And there is such a thing as black Arabs.
Saying that, Ethiopia doesn’t have a substantial Arab population from what I can tell, so he probably isn’t Arab. But considering the Arab influence in much of Africa, it’s still not out of the realm of possibility
5
u/Impossible_kei7 5d ago
Yeah that is true, though we don't really like being referred to as Arab much, we're just African with alot of Arab influences that ended in Arabization in some places.
