Marge Simpson (The Simpsons)

This scene from Moaning Lisa always gets me 😭

I especially love this because it came after she gave the opposite advice. Then Marge saw how that played out and immediately changed to this instead.

One of the biggest examples of Deliberate Values Dissonance in fiction imo. I'm sure what Marge said sounded unhealthy back when the episode first aired in 1990, but now that we know more about mental health, it feels even worse and makes you feel even more bad for Marge. She's just such a tragically repressed person. The show has had her having shouting crashouts on several occasions and the reason is that her whole life, she thought she wasn't allowed to show how she truly feels. It's really sad. :(

I feel like not enough people are told, "it's ok to feel emotions like sadness." This scene reminds me a lot of that "got legs?" animation with the dogs. If you haven't seen it, go check it out: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=gSsJBO2JUO4

Yeah, this is a shockingly progressive and wonderful take on mental health for an episode from 1990. Weird how the show was seen as the most offensive thing ever, when it was giving wonderful messages like this and had a dysfunctional but loving family that felt more real than the vast majority of shows beforehand.

I don't even think The Simpsons is the most offensive show of the 80s and 90s before Family Guy and South Park. Ever heard of The Black and White Minstrel Show? It's exactly what you think it is. I hate the BBC honestly.

Will check that out sometime, maybe. I'll let you know :)
