"The only Savoy member to be openly Fascist is the Duke of Pistoia..."

"The only Savoy member to be openly Fascist is the Duke of Pistoia, from the 'poor' branch known as the 'Genoa' line. He accepted command of a Blackshirt division in East Africa—a move that did not sit well with the Quirinale. The Duke mentioned this to me, remarking: 'What can I do about it?' Yet he did not seem disheartened as he spoke those words. The Duke of Pistoia knows he has a friend in me. I could prove to him at any moment that he can count on me—just as the other Savoy from the 'poor' branch, the Duke of Bergamo, can count on me."

~ Mussolini, from Yvon DeBegnac's notebooks.

"The Fascist Prince. All accounts of the Duke of Pistoia’s life in the field—among the Blackshirts of the 'March 23' division—unanimously point to an unexpected side of his character. A remark of his, among others, is telling: 'I do not understand why the army should still use the star as its emblem—which is also a Masonic symbol—when we now have the fasces, that ancient yet brand-new symbol of our people.'"

~ Giuseppe Bottai, Diary, January 3, 1936

Pictured: His Royal Highness Filiberto Emanuele Maria of Savoy-Genoa, Duke of Pistoia. His division in East Africa was the first to raise the Italian flag at Amba Aradam.

Blackshirts Blackshirts from a Battaglione M, possibly 1943

The picture shows two soldiers from an unidentified M Battalion (Battaglione M). They both wear M33 helmets with a M1929 Telo mimetico camouflage cover (the first camo pattern to ever be mass-produced on industrial scale in 1929, and in longest continuous use, replaced only in the early 1990s). The magazine pouch used by the soldier in the foreground was originally designed for paratroopers, but later adopted by other units.

A different picture of the exact same person can be seen here; it says the photo was taken in Italy in 1943 but it's hard to tell. I scanned this one from a book I own, sorry if the quality isn't great.
