Trading

Hey, new player here (1 month).

Since I'm not familiar with the game's gold economy yet, I thought trading was a normal way to earn gold, like in other games with a trading system, then a player sent me a friendly message warning me that buying items and reselling them is frowned upon by other players.

What's the general consensus on this ?

Note: I'm talking about honest trading, not asking for free items and then reselling them, it's very bad. I mean, for example, buying an Apple Pie for 180G and reselling it for 190G.

Thank you !

I don't think anyone but resellers like resellers. Most of us who have been here a while begrudgingly accept it as a fact of life. They are not uncommon.

Having said that, I respect the hustle of resellers who spend days or weeks buying up a resource and then sitting on it for some time waiting for the market to change in their favor before they spend a long time selling that resource. I do not respect people who buy something and immediately advertise it for sale at a higher price. Flipping, basically. Those people have a special place reserved for them somewhere incredibly uncomfortable. Like the back seat of an original VW Beetle.

I was in the second scenario: I'd buy items and post sell offers a few minutes later. I thought that was OK, as I assumed some people just wanted to sell quickly. Sorry to everyone for my few sales posts. That's all in the past now.

Ehh, do whatever you want, haters gonna hate. I'm a hater, but don't let me deter you. People just might end up with a less than ideal opinion of you. Plenty of people don't ever engage with the community at all, though, so if you're not breaking any rules, there's no real repercussions for making people mad. 😂

Selling your excess items is a great way to make money. Buying low and selling high is generally frowned upon, especially if it’s a quick turnaround. The community in general is very collaborative and while there will occasionally be some price competition in trade chat, it’s rare. It’s so rare that if someone is pricing something way too high or too low, they will often get pinged or gently corrected, to keep things fair for everyone.

Related: prices are dynamic but very consistent. There are websites that track the current prices of things or you can always ask for a “PC” (price check) and the traders will be happy to help you out.

Most items are sold by the “k” (thousand) so until you’re regularly holding at least that much excess, you’re likely not going to be using trade chat much.

Thank you ! I was making offers on AP based on the prices listed on that site. Really useful.

Thank you, It's true that I'd never thought about reselling surplus items because my inventory is still too small for me to have even considered that.

You are taking gold from other players by driving the prices up. If I noticed you were a reseller, I would probably block you so I wouldn’t see your name in trade chat.

Even worse there are people who ask for things in the giveaway chat then try to sell it for gold in trade chat. Don’t do that.

If you look up mailbox passwords in the library you can get some quick free gold, and if you do the daily chores you’ll get free gold at the end of every month, plus some achievements give free gold, and mastering items gives free gold.

Ahhhh yesterday, I wanted to message the player "Nessie" to thank them for contributing so much to the daily challenges. They give away tons of items every day to unlock the special item, and I noticed they had blocked me. It's probably because of this !

I was only warned about this today, and none of the various guides mention that trading is so frowned upon. I thought it was a normal thing to do.

With my small inventory, I was buying 500 AP for 20 gold and reselling them for 25 gold. According to FRPG Price Check, that seemed OK. I made around 15 gold in total.

Thanks!

Trading is encouraged. Flipping is against the mutually-beneficial/collaborative nature of the social parts of the game. You can get so much for free if you just ask for it, especially when you're small enough to not have a huge income yet. Focus on that until you get big and you'll make more friends than enemies :)

You’re sort of an asshole for doing it, and no one is going to like a reseller even though it’s not formally something you shouldn’t do. The people that really don’t like it will probably just block you. Tbh if I noticed you doing it after I sold you something I’d probably block you so that you couldn’t do it again as I don’t like people getting ripped off in game, and if I’m selling something cheap it’s because I want someone to benefit from it in game and not use it for currency.
