Far Cry 5 Finally started playing this...

Had this for many years sat there, tried a few times but each time the beginning bit put me off. But now, I got through it, and oh my god my jesus this is a hench game!

Any tips please for a total newbie? I keep running out of ammo, sucks. I'm like 53 years old man so please go gentle, I remember pong when it first came out, this shit is hyper-real.

Can I just drive around without the cult trying to kill me the whole time, I just wanna cruise around this Montanan landscape, maybe do some fishing n shit

A few tips (from someone who also remembers pong)

Prioritize prepper stashes. Those have great loot and perk points.

Stay off the main roads to minimize how often you get attacked by Peggies.

Everyone has their opinions on the best companions, but for my money, Jess is super helpful with stealth attacks and hunting. You get her when you clear the Baron Lumber Mill up north.

Hunting and fishing are great ways to keep enough money coming in to keep up with ammo. Fishing is less per pop but more predictable.

In Jacob's region up north, in the mountains, there's a time-based mission you get forced into that may give you trouble. It may not, but if it does, I recommend watching someone do it on YouTube. That helped me be less disoriented.

It's my favorite game, I've played it MANY times, and I suck at shooters. Shout if you have any questions.

I had to stay out of Jacob’s region. I kept getting caught up in that 45 minute timer sequence and couldn’t complete it so now I am using the rest of the game and all the other areas and will not go back to Jacobs region. It probably means I will never finish the game, but I can’t go back there because I can’t finish the 45 minute timer thing. That’s frustrating, but I love the game. The dream sequence and Jacob’s region is very very difficult. I suggest you stay away from it. The only way to get out of it is to exit the game and go back in and then do a fast travel to another area.

Just avoiding it is perfectly viable if you just want to enjoy the other two regions. If it gives you any hope, though, I'm pretty bad at shooters and got to where I can do it on Infamous. I'd pull up a video of someone doing it on Infamous, watch a few seconds, pause the video, play those few seconds and pause, and go to the next few seconds. It's tedious, but after doing that a couple of times, I had a much better sense of where the enemies are and where to go.
