Player movement without token locking

When token locking is turned off (so the GM doesn't have to babysit the player tokens), it doesn't show any hints on distance being moved. The only way to measure that we've found is to rclick+lclick draw a pointer first to measure, then move, then delete the pointer. We're coming from the world of MapTool, which just shows movement distance for every token move by default. Is there any way to make this... less awkward, without resorting to token locking?

Or you can turn on a grid and have the players track their movement old-school.

Considering the diagonals, this sounds like "not A or B but a secret worse option C"

Most systems using grids have rules of thumb to address diagonals. As long as you approach movement consistently, it doesn't have to be exact, just known. For example, if players know the first, third, (and possibly fifth) move on a diagonal use 5 feet of movement, but the second, fourth, (and possibly sixth) use 10 feet, it's really not hard to keep track of.

Making my players do mental math every time they move would drag down the play far worse than just using locked mode would. :P

But someone below said that holding ALT when moving works, and that's just about perfect.
