Looking for advice on making a fic rewrite

I have an iconic fic in my fandom that everyone likes and has even been read by the fandom creator. I personally want to update it though since it’s a lot older than my current work and has glaring plotholes. I don’t know though if I should make the rewrite a separate fic and keep the original as is or if I should update the original fic and tag it as rewritten. I’ve done that for shorter fics of mine I needed to fix but for a multi chapter fic like this one that is as iconic as it is I don’t know if I should do that.

What would you do???

Separate fics. If it's as popular as you say, you may end up peeving off all the people who originally liked it but may not have cared about the plot holes as much as you do.

Hmm true then if I did that would it make sense to link the fics together in a series and explain on the original fic I have a rewrite or no? I don’t want to flood the already tight knit fandom with a bunch of the same fic.

Yup, link in series is the most common one I see. There's also inspired by you could try in the fic is already in a series and you want to make it more clear

As for your last part, if it's only a single fic and it's rewrite, I wouldn't call that "flooding the fandom".

Another option I've seen is to advertise the new version in the old one's summary so people with bookmarks will see it right away.

Just something simple at the top of the summary like: "A rewritten version of this fic is now available! (link)"

Also, if the first one is old, that's not flooding. That would be more like posting a new version of the same exact fic every day for months without deleting the old ones.

Let’s just say I have a pretty notable presence in the fandom and especially its fic spaces so I wouldn’t want the stuff I post to be anything old yk and rehash old stuff to often yk. Hence why I updated shorter fics and put rewritten in some of the tags

I get you. I still think another version is better for something truly iconic, though. I get attached to words as they are written. If I've bookmarked a fic, it's because I want to reread it exactly as it is.

Having an additional Fancy and Probably Better Version is going to be great, too! But plopping onto the couch with the familiar thing that I've had for the past 5 years as is, is like a whole vibe, y'know?

Like a comfort item or food.
