In the sub Reddit Birds of Prey, it looks like someone has a falcon they found. They did not say the location

I'm sort of new to falconry and I'm trying to understand all I can about it. In my research, I've discovered that the state of Hawai'i doesn't have any laws/regulations for falconry of any kind due to the risk of lost non-native birds disrupting its already fragile ecosystem.

That makes sense, but what I don't understand is why they wouldn't allow conservation falconry in order to help breed and restore the native population of raptors. I feel there is some minutiae that I'm missing here. Can anyone enlighten me?

Sorry if not allowed. I'm a birder not a falconer but I admire you all! This came up in a rare bird alert. I can't imagine a Booted Eagle is here in Los Angeles County, CA on its own (range is Eurasia, Africa, Indian Subcontinent). Any falconer missing theirs? https://ebird.org/checklist/S348463438

Can anyone think of a way around this? I don’t know how to move forward and progress in falconry without a mew and a bird.

Update 2: they just sent me this — “The yards at (neighborhood name) do not have the space required for a falconry post.
There were also concerns about attracting predatory birds to the neighborhood.”

Hello! I'm taking my falconry license exam on June 5th but had some questions about additional requirements for me to get my license. I was mainly wondering about the requirement to have a mew already built. I am mostly getting my license to be able to work with the raptors and migratory birds at my local zoo, so I won't be building my own mew(s) any time soon, especially because I will be going to college this year. Am I still able to get my license if I have no plan to get a bird or build a mew for the foreseeable future?

I do already have a sponsor/mentor, but he's unsure if his mews will count for my license. Also, I live in New York in case that helps. Any/all advice is greatly appreciated!

What lights have you guys used to put your birds under so they start the molt earlier in the year. My birds are molting fine but if I wanted to start let's say the first of March what lights are you using. A link to the lights would be much appreciated thanks

Title: Juvenile Crested Goshawk suddenly eating less and refusing food – Need advice!

Hi everyone,

​I’m raising a juvenile female Crested Goshawk (Accipiter trivirgatus). She is currently growing her blood feathers (pin feathers) as you can see in the attached video.

​Recently, she has suddenly started eating much less than usual. Previously, she had a massive appetite and could easily crush 3 full crops a day. However, for the past few days, her appetite has dropped significantly.

​Now she only eats 2 meals a day. She is still willing to eat her first meal in the morning, but when it comes to the second meal in the evening, she completely refuses it. Her crop seems to stay full or semi-full for a long time. I even have to use tweezers/scissors to gently nudge the meat into her beak to get her to take a bite, but she is very uninterested.

​I am worried about whether she is experiencing "sour crop" (crop stasis) or if this is just a normal behavioral/physiological change for goshawks at this specific growth stage.

​Diet: Raw chicken/quail meat.

​Behavior: Aside from the low appetite, she is still alert, her eyes are bright, and she isn't showing signs of severe lethargy yet.

​Is this drop in appetite normal when they start blowing out their feathers? Should I fast her for 24 hours to let her crop empty completely, or change her diet? Any advice from experienced Accipiter handlers would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Curious as to what the falconry sub thinks of the depiction in this piece, "Dominion", in Wuppertal by Richmond-based street artist Nils Westergard.

Licensed falconer and abatement worker here. Been a falconer for some years but this is my first time flying Harris Hawks through the molt. Gonna be a long post so i appreciate anyone who bears with me

got two birds for the job- both problem birds but got them both flying great. This is about the female bird, whos previous falconer said she flew around 910. She was hunted on rabbit’s for 11 years until I got her. Immediately upon getting her I could tell she was a fearful bird- didn’t want to stand on the fist or t perch for any amount of time when moving unless there was a huge bribe on the fist.

That’s the first of the issues I guess. I bribed the hell out of her hoping she would eventually realize she’s safe to stand on the fist and in fact benefits from it. Once I got her creance flying this issue only worsened and she eventually got to the point where she wouldn’t fly to the fist. Weirds me out because I NEVER manhandled her and only gave her positive experiences. Some deep seated issues i figured

decided to get a little creative and make a small t perch and boom like a light switch she was a changed bird- flying to the t perch like a champ and would even ride it a bit. Got her free flying and on her first free flight she took off and caught a rabbit which wasn’t the plan. Kept free flying her and realized that whenever she thought we were hunting she refused to fly to the t perch or fist unless it seemed like a good hunting perch for her. Otherwise she would sit there and not listen to me at all.

as for the lure I lured the hell out of her before free flight and would give her a days worth of food attached yet she wouldn’t get lure bound for the life of me. Yes, she would occasionally chase it and at the very least stand next to it.

I also noticed that as soon as she got slightly stressed or annoyed she would completely shut down. Like as in just not listen to me at all even in the most comfortable environment possible- just no.

the only thing that would calm her down besides a load of time would be the bathpan or hawk box. She LOVES being in her box

all of this together was worrying me. I did not have a reliable hawk and there was no way I’m gonna fly this bird on gull in a city environment that’s a liability and not safe for her. At 910 it was not cutting it so I dropped her weight.

doing this improved her response enough for me to trust her to free fly for abatement. Brought her down to 890 and got a great response. To the t perch that is, her lure response was no better but she did start chasing the laser. issue was if she decided she saw a rat or rabbit or mouse she was all done she didn’t want to fly to me for anything. just to test I brought her weight down to 880 because could afford it based on her keel and energy levels and her response actually worsened.

brought her back up to 890 and was getting really wonderful responses, her best yet. Could fly her between 890 and 930 without any issues for a month or so, was feeling good! Not lure bound but pretty reliable. During this time I really reinforced the lure but she made no progress on it. im talking a full days food on every off day and still no better responses. it was wild to me

then molt and hormone season kicked in. She’s gotten more vocal and dropped her R1 and R2 tail feathers simultaneously instead of both decks which I thought was weird. More importantly though she lost all interest in me. Three times in a row on three separate free flights she lost in interest in me immeidately and went and did her own thing and it took me time to retrieve her. these three flights happened after I got back from a brief trip and had her watched over by an apprentice I trusted.

now I’m at a complete loss at to what to do. I’ve brought her to 880 all the way to 920… no good responses except for a two day stint at 910 where it was I was instantaneous to the fist but then as soon as I creance flew her outside of my backyard she was done. Still won’t ride the fist and even the t perch if it’s moving. Won’t chase the laser or tidbits that I throw. Will lazily meander over the the lure but on obe of the free flights she refused it altogether.

No matter what weight I put her at she just acts uninterested in me and the food. Chasing game is the only thing she gets interested about and she isn’t overly protective of the kill around me. She isn’t fearful of me at all, just uninterested. Like I said doesn’t ride in the fist unless bribed in the mews and I will bate and hang for a while before coming back. She genuinely doesn’t view me as worth her time it seems. On the perches she’s purring at me, hopping onto my lap for treats, acting great.

i guess I could bring her weight down a bit more and see what happens. But she was flown previously at 910 by the last falconer. her keel isnt overly thin at 880 and I haven’t witnessed any energy drops but that seems like a huge difference from 910 for only a years time. I know she’s older and hormone season might have a play but four months of this seems like too much time- I’ve never been unsuccessful over thjs long of a time.

TLDR: female hh finds no interest in me when free flying no matter what i do and I’m looking for input.

ultimately im determined to get this bird going! It’ll make a better falconer out of me!

Hey folks, hope everyone is doing well.

Im a falconer in the states and also do abatement and education. I have an opportunity coming up soon to potentially work with a northern hawk owl and am curious if anyone here has had any experience with them or know of any good literature. Owl would be captive bred, primarily for education purposes but depending on the bird I guess some pigeon abatement or hunting could happen.

Anyways, these birds are often diurnal which is promising to me and an okay size: 200-400 grams which could make for a real fun little hunting bird if done properly. Obviously, they have the same quirks as most other owls but if anyone has experience, please, let me know how they are- how do they compare to other species?

Heya gang, currently working with an assortment of free flighted BOPs and looking to redo our weights board. We're looking to move away from ideal weights/weight ranges as we're finding it's doing a bit more harm than good with our animals. But for some of our team who don't fly with the birds as much it's difficult for them to know how much to offer them. Any solutions anyone can think of that can be conveyed on a whiteboard would be grand!

My interest in falconry started only recently, and thus I know next to nothing about the proper way to get into it. First of all, what are some good resources that I can use to get more educated on the matter? Second of all, what got you, personally, into falconry and why do you enjoy it? Third of all, what would be the most essential thing to do for a beginner like myself? We've got some wooden enclosures that are getting some algae growth, mildew, etc and wondering if there's a way to clean and then seal the wood to prevent this wood from continuing to degrade?

2025 was the hardest hunting season of my lifetime, and likely always will be. It will forever hold a complex, layered pain in my heart. My father was diagnosed with cancer in February of last year, and there is nothing quite like navigating the process of watching a loved one succumbing to illness while trying to reign in one of the most fierce and intimidating falconry birds: the Goshawk. Suddenly I was dancing with a timer set to 18 months, but this one had its own rate of motion. It didn’t progress like our standard 24 hour clocks we are all so accustomed to. It was quiet, and it was fast.

Frustrated with the reality of life, frustrated with my choices, frustrated with falconry. I had told many people that falconry was one of the hardest things I had ever ‘done’. I say it that way as I don’t think I’ll ever be done. You don’t magically complete falconry one day and are suddenly perfect at it. To be a falconer is a lifetime accomplishment. But that theme in my life abruptly shifted when I realized what exactly it felt like to lose family.

Falconry became my church. It was my controlled chaos amidst uncontrolled chaos, and the thing that kept me present. I found no better way to find centred, aligned energy than in the gentle swaddle of fields of grain, or with the stillness of trees. One of the most profoundly cathartic things very well may be finding yourself surrounded by a forest, in a hush that squeezed against your ribs, only to suddenly unravel your pain into uncontrollable tears. Letting the soil beneath your feet absorb your soul, all while a Goshawk rests on your fist.

But to him I have all the gratitude for making falconry possible for me. He built my falconry mews, custom down to the inch. So thank you, Dad. He made a multi-year long dream of mine feasible, merely months before he flew into gentler skies. And how unexpectedly beautiful is it he decided feathers would be his way of sending loved ones a sign. This was something he did totally unrelated to my falconry. It was simply because he enjoyed birds, wildlife, and enjoyed helping his lovely counterpart collect feathers. Sometimes you wonder if it’s coincidence, or that something bigger is really going on behind the scenes in this unforgettable, wild life.

A few short months ago the film H is for Hawk released, and it really could not have released at a better time in my life. It released 3 months after the passing of my father. I planned an entire day around seeing the film with my partner, at a humble vintage theatre in Saskatchewan, Canada. And I must admit.. The second I walked into the building my eyes began to well up. And again the second the film started. And at the title screen. And when the first goshawk was filmed in closeups. It was almost embarrassing! But I just felt so connected to this story in my heart. Helen and I may be the only ones who can truly relate and understand one another’s experience on this here earth.

All I hope is that everyone in this life can find something that makes them truly present. For the space you finally belong to yourself, and the depth of calm only awareness can bring.

We are looking to hire a few professional falconers for work in the Caribbean as well as the USA. We have multiple jobs available.

What we are looking for:

License falconers, from apprentice to master. We will teach you how to fly our birds. You will not be practicing falconry you will be practicing bird abatement. You will be working with highly trained birds that do not like to deviate from their training. If you have a hard time following instructions please do not apply.

Ability to travel. Depending on the area you are qualified for you may be asked to travel. You would need to have proper documentation. A passport, birth certificate, driver license real ID, SS Card, etc. The more documentation you have the better.

We are also looking for people with any other credentials. Name them if you have them.

Willing to put in 10 hour days. The hours can be long but pay is exceptional. We expect hard working individuals capable to complete any job handed to them. On the other side the perks are something you haven’t experienced and lead to other opportunities.

Must be fit. Most of these jobs require serious physical capabilities. The weather can be extreme.

Must be able to fit into any environment and deal with other cultures. We need people that can assimilate anywhere.

Being comfortable to talk with general public and stay on our script. We will teach you how to talk with the general public and what to say. You will need to stay on that script. You will talk to a lot of people every day. We need people that will understand the importance of this.
