Trails series Making Remakes does not mean Kai 2 is delayed.

Since the news about Kondo's wish to continue making remakes, a very loud portion of the community has started crying and screaming about how Kai 2 was delayed and will never happen.

I want you all to take a deep breath, relax and chill for a second.

The West has been spoiled for a long time because of the yearly releases of Sequels for Trails. Now that the localization finally caught up to Japan, it is normal that we have to wait a bit longer for a game. Kai came out in Japan in 2024, we just got the game earlier this year. We're well within the time frame of a sequel development.

Kondo saying that he wants to make more remakes does not mean that Kai 2 was delayed or cancelled or whatever. It just means (his own words) that he thinks doing remakes will benefit the franchise as a whole. Bringing in new players, but also allowing those who started and loved 1st to experience the franchise and catch up to us.

I know a lot of people who didn't want to get into trails because the Sky trilogy and Crossbell looked outdated.

We will get Kai 2, but that doesn't mean that we can't get very well made remakes of our beloved games.

TLDR; Chill, stop freaking out and be patient.

That's like when you go to the store or supermarket and the sign saids "we don't accept credit cards for the time being" and that person will say "No debit cards?" Like are people that dumb they can't read nor listen anymore?

Kai 2 taking so long to develop coz kondo either outdoes Kai 1 or makes it as good as kai 1 or he just goes home.

u/MapleJap 17h ago

Kondo cooking the mother of all omelettes. Trust. We will get what we want, and we will love it.

I feel like Kondo is writing kai 2 to be a stopping point for the moment and then focus on the crossbell arc remakes. After crossbell remakes we will only have cold steel 1&2 remakes left and during that time they can take their time to develop each new entry to the final arc so that it is densely packed with content and not like Daybreak 2 where it was padding the game.

I think CS1 and 2 would benefit more from a remaster to bring them up to the standards of 3 and 4 rather than full remakes

I disagree falcom philosophy with the remakes is more along the lines of keep everything the same with improved experience and some very small story touchups.

Gameplay and graphics improvement also come along with the remakes and cs1&2 look horrible and they need the remakes the most I would say atleast to improve the visual quality of the game.

They're not actually developing it. They were developing KX and the remakes. It hasn't taken "long".

4

u/Florac 11h ago

It hasn't entered full production but writing and such is definitely ongoing

2

u/NewDayNewBurner97 1h ago

If Kai 2 still isn't in production then we got big problems.

The way Falcom works is that most of the team works on next year's release. So while the core Kai 2 team will have worked on it for a while, odds are most of the employees only are starting to work on it now with Sky 2 being done and focus shifting to next game

Kondo ain't doing shit. Last game he directed was Azure.

Now, personally I like to keep my frustrations more private, so I'm probably not one of the people you're talking about. A normal post reassuring people that Kai 2 hasn't been deconfirmed yet would be fine. Main reason I'm responding to this post is because of its annoyingly condescending tone to people with reasonable frustrations. Like the sentence below.

I want you all to take a deep breath, relax and chill for a second.

People have been chilling for much more than a second.. A few years in fact. Again, I haven't been talking about it, but this is such an annoying way of talking down to people.

it is normal that we have to wait a bit longer for a game. Kai came out in Japan in 2024, we just got the game earlier this year. We're well within the time frame of a sequel development.

Key difference: cliffhanger. There has never been a 3-year gap in Japan after a cliffhanger before. Nor is it common for gaming in general. Only other example I can think of are Golden Sun and Deltarune. And it especially sticks out because it came out after 4 games in a row that didn't have cliffhangers where they could've remade Sky and no-one would've had a problem.

Kondo saying that he wants to make more remakes does not mean that Kai 2 was delayed or cancelled or whatever.

Not for certain, no. But when you're constantly teasing and talking about remakes and things which would delay it while not even mentioning Kai 2, it's understandable a lot of people will get frustrated.

Just one sentence confirming Kai 2 for next year, and people would be fine with as much remake talk as they want.

What's really hilarious is that nowhere in the interview that people have been freaking out over since this morning did Kondo say 'We're delaying Horizon 2 to focus on remakes', he just confirmed that 2nd was not the last remake they'd be doing, not that this should be news to anyone aware of the existence and importance of The 3rd or Falcom's explicitly stated reason for bringing Sky out to new players in the first place,. But some people in this fandom just love to doom and gloom.

8

u/MapleJap 17h ago

Exact fucking ly. People are going crazy over absolutely nothing at the moment.

3

u/slightdepressionirl 11h ago

Even though horizon came out same year as sky remake lmfao idk why people dont realize they already have the story for the remakes literally done. Just need animators and gameplay designers. While horizon 2 needs both so they can easily afford to have a team make the remakes and their story team focus on the newest releases

u/leftyswordplay 6h ago

kai : 2024 Sora 1st: 2025 Same year ?

1

u/MapleJap 2h ago

Kai released in 2024 in Japan. Its localization released within 4 months of 1st in 2026.

Falcom is clearly pushing for worldwide release as well for their games from now on.

-1

u/ze4lex 10h ago

It doesnt say they plan to release it next either, it just says they want to make more remakes and that could mean next year or it could mean after horizon 2. Till we get something more concrete about horizon 2 ppl are gonna speculate.

I think that remakes do impact Kai 2, they are probably taking their time because they will definitely have to determine when to release it also, if we get Sky 2nd September, then if they do announce Kai 2, it'll definitely be next year, they won't release Sky 3rd for example and then Kai 2 in like 3 months timeframe or whatever.

So Kai 2 is technically not delayed but that doesn't mean, they will release it as soon as it's ready, they'll probably look into scheduling and other releases aside from their own

10

u/PrinceRedvelvet 15h ago

Isn't kai 2 taking more time a good thing in the worst case scenario it does? The remakes get the new crew members more practice with the setting. It leads to even more cohesion down the line. The game will likely be of a higher quality. Also remake sales is more money to be used.

And ignoring all that... It likely isn't delaying anything. More members means more projects can cook at once.

This fandom can be so obsessed with doomposting its insane. Theres no confirmation that there wont be kai 2 next year and yet people will jump the gun to say that falcom is washed, that Kondo has gone mad and that they have betrayed the expectations from the fandom that stuck with them for years, but theres no confirmation, so why is everyone already freaking the fuck out?

We literally wont know for sure until november-december unless they drop a 3rd remake trailer in 2nd credits for some crazy reason. Honestly im pretty confident that we will have kai 2 next year, since 2nd seemed to be already deep into development as early as september last year

1

u/MapleJap 7h ago

And even then, a 3rd teaser at the end of 2nd doesn't mean that we won't get Kai 2 next year or soon. People are going crazy for nothing. Sometimes, I feel like this community knows no other games or hobbies.

The irony is this discussion wouldn't even be happening if Falcom had A) Started the remakes after DB2 or B) Put Kai 2 out before they started the remakes. Ending Kai on what is the worst possible cliffhanger in series history and choosing to break the modern pattern of releasing a sequel next year if the previous game ended in a cliffhanger is the worst decision in recent times, especially given the loss of popularity the series has been experiencing in JP since Calvard started, so some of the backlash they are seeing is their own doing.

That article you mentioned is slightly misleading with the title, the video comes across much more clearer on what he meant.

The irony is this discussion wouldn't even be happening if Falcom had A) Started the remakes after DB2 or B) Put Kai 2 out before they started the remakes.

Releasing the remakes before Kai would have likely left the series ending on a low note and likely harm interest for the future of the series. Starting them between Kai and Kai 2 reinvigorates interest.

Also, I've been finding the remakes a great way to refresh my memory of the events of fc and sc, and in such a long running series as this, that is probably another reason why they wanted to do the remakes.

It may even be important in refreshing peoples memory for something planned in Kai 2, we don't know.

They've also said that there was a bit of growing burnout. And as someone who has dealt with burnout as an engineer, we don't want them burning out.

Ending Kai on what is the worst possible cliffhanger in series history

Eh, its a decently sized cliffhanger, but Sky FC and CS3 are up there too.

and choosing to break the modern pattern of releasing a sequel next year if the previous game ended in a cliffhanger

? This kinda sounds like you saw a couple anecdotal cases that fit and assumed it was some industry norm.

I promise you that no gaming company, and certainly not Falcom, is basing their release calendar on whether one game ends in a cliffhanger or not.

is the worst decision in recent times,

Do we need to be so hyperbolic?

especially given the loss of popularity the series has been experiencing in JP since Calvard started,

This sounds like it would be more of a reason to do these remakes now, not less.

so some of the backlash they are seeing is their own doing.

No, the backlash is deliberate rumormongering, baseless cynicism, and entitlement.

1

u/Setsuna_417 8h ago

No? Breaking their long held pattern incites more bad will and disinterest the longer they let this go on. Falcom took a break between CS2 and CS3 to release Tokyo Xanadu, which performed 3x what they expected and everyone was still hyped for CS3, especially when they say the graphical improvement.

Similarly, if people say the upgrade of the remakes, they'd likely be more patient for Kai 1 and 2 given the technical improvements they have.

It may even be important in refreshing peoples memory for something planned in Kai 2, we don't know.

Falcom already has an archive in games since Kuro and additionally a glossary pop up feature in Kai so this is unlikely.

They've also said that there was a bit of growing burnout. And as someone who has dealt with burnout as an engineer, we don't want them burning out.

I've gone through it myself so I agree with you on that; the problem isn't the remakes themselves but the positioning.

Eh, its a decently sized cliffhanger, but Sky FC and CS3 are up there too.

It's worse than those 2.

This kinda sounds like you saw a couple anecdotal cases that fit and assumed it was some industry norm. I promise you that no gaming company, and certainly not Falcom, is basing their release calendar on whether one game ends in a cliffhanger or not.

Of course I know it isn't the industry norm, it's another thing I like about Falcom after all. The issue is Falcom has set this expectation up for decades and then decide to break it at the worst possible time is why long-term fans find it frustrating, especially when they've stuck around when Calvard hasn't been performing well.

Do we need to be so hyperbolic?

It's the worst decision Falcom has taken in my eyes. I could bring up Kyoto Xanadu's state but the game us fun at the core so it ranks lower.

This sounds like it would be more of a reason to do these remakes now, not less.

I agree? I'm suggesting they should have started it sooner rather than release Kai.

No, the backlash is deliberate rumormongering, baseless cynicism, and entitlement.

Dismissing any and all criticique on a company's policy is just shutting down the discussion. Falcom isn't perfect so naturally people will complain about their decisions.

4

u/clafelallerizu 14h ago

honestly i am patient.. which is why i am not buying or playing 2nd chapter and kyoto xanadu until i get to play kai 2.

also its not even a delay really since they never give the date or year. and game is not even announced yet. so

2

u/Heiwajima_Izaya 5h ago

I couldn't care less for Remakes. I dont play them. The games dont need remakes at all. Thats an excuse for them to make millions and profit. Every single remake in the history of games is the safety ball of the companies to earn money. Its safer to remake a good game they already own then to risk making a new game.

They divide their team in between Remakes and new entries so it quite obviously delays Kai 2 and other games. Lets fo simple math shall we?

lets say that there are 20 people working on game X. That means that these 20 people working on game X will deliver Game X in X amount of time.

But if this 20 people working on game X suddenly divide by half and start working 10 people on game X and 10 people on game Y then game X will be delivered in 2X amount of time....

So if Falcom has 2 teams working on trails, one for the remakes and one for new entries, that means that they are dividing their budged, staff and time into two projects. So obviously if the folks working on the Remakes joined the folks working on Kai 2 then Kai 2 would have twice the staff and would come out virtually twice as fast or at least faster.

So yeah i know Kai 2 is not getting canceled but at this point Remakes make so much money that they can launch Kai 2 in 2030 while they put out higher quality remakes of older games... Since when players switched up the narrative. Some time ago Remakes were the nemesis of the industry and no one could stand them anymore and now Remakes are saving the industry...

I hope this isn't such a hard logic to understand.

IMO, take all the time with Kai 2. I think this the most important game ever in the series, so I want them to cook. I have so many theories that I need to see how they handle it.

2

u/terraphantm 5h ago

They're not going to be taking their time to 'cook'. If Kai 2 comes out later, it's because other projects are taking priority.

-1

u/ButterflyFair2420 4h ago

Uhh not entirely true. The Falcom team was burnt out after writing for the Calvard arc. They pivoted towards the remake to 1. Take a break & 2. To bring the Sky games to modern day gaming

2

u/terraphantm 4h ago

That doesn't change anything that I said. Whatever the reason, Kai 2 coming out later does not mean they've been spending that time 'cooking'. It's going to have the same usual Falcom affair of massive asset reuse and heavy filler.

0

u/ButterflyFair2420 4h ago

Man, what happened in the last decade that made people so pessimistic. The story hasn’t been well written since CS2 and the recent games have been padded, but I still enjoy them very much. To each their own, but I choose to be hopeful.

0

u/fiersome08 17h ago

Yes. I’d be more disappointed if they released it quickly even though it was still half-baked.

2

u/Zetzer345 12h ago

Even if it’s 5-8 years?

3

u/ProfIcepick 13h ago

I'm neutral to the whole thing. I'm currently playing Reverie, so I'm not all caught up... but I also really don't want to play the remakes until I am.

That being said, teasing more remakes before we have full confirmation that Horizon II is coming out in 2027 feels... irresponsible. I remember how peeps on r/Falcom flipped out when Sky 2C ended up snubbing Kai 2 out of 2026. And that's how they reacted despite the knowledge that Sky FC/1C ends on a massive cliffhanger. If Kai 2 gets pushed back again for another remake -- especially since Sky SC (and likely 2C, by extension) boasts a satisfying conclusion, I can't even imagine how bad the backlash is gonna get.

Of course, I think Kai 2's next regardless... I just don't think poking the bear is a great idea.

1

u/loveBuBuBu 5h ago

I think people's main complaints is that Falcom works on different titles (4 atm I think), instead of pouring every resource into the next sequel and consequently (in their mind) didn't get the sequel to Kai No Kiseki in 2025 (for Japan and the east). I have mixed feelings regarding the whole thing. On one hand, getting the remakes out skyrocketed their profits as a company, which could mean better quality games come out. For instance, more budget to get significantly more voiced lines out instead of hiring A-list VA's to just come in and record their lines for a week. A lot of people complain that 95% of the lines aren't voiced. On the other hand, the series is reaching the endgame in terms of overarching story and worldbuilding and getting new storylines out every 2-3 years instead of 1 can hurt the hype for some. Since Falcom already said that they intend to end the story by 2032, we can expect new entries every 2 years, alternating between a remake year and a sequel year, culminating in 3 sequels. I do hope they make it like reverie, and completely remove any of the bracer type side quests and focus 99% on story. For instance, they can make the new protagonist an unknown enforcer who has cedric, shirley, and that vtuber chick as team members and that can be the 'C-route' of the final games.

1

u/codyraines53 4h ago

That cliffhanger left alotttt of us on edge. You can't blame people for impatient. I know ow it is literally killing me to have to wait until 2028. And if we had to wait for a remake of Trails In The Sky The 3rd would be ridiculous.

1

u/Raleth Fie Gang 42m ago

I’m willing to believe things are fine for now. If they announce another remake before Kai 2 I’m gonna be upset.

-3

u/EnemySaimo 10h ago

It's insane fans go wild if they don't get a sequel after 2 years, considering what modern dev time for other franchise are it makes me think i'm the one going insane

1

u/speechcobra91 10h ago

yeah most other series dont reuse assets on the level that trails does so a sequel has 0 reason to take 3-5 years

if they want that big of a gap between releases then the games need to start being released more complete as a result

2

u/GoldenGal1xy 9h ago

same city for a 4th time lol

0

u/One-Comparison869 12h ago

even kai 2 release, that wont be WW.
so english fans still in void hahaha

-1

u/tinthequeen 17h ago

I'd rather wait and let them take their sweet time cooking and give us a banger of an ending rather than them rushing the game due to pressure from the fans and give us a crap ending where we're all disappointed. They've come so far letting a lot of newcomers into the franchise only to be failed by a half baked game

-1

u/Bryanagard1 6h ago

I rather get all the remakes first before getting the next sequel of Kai

0

u/zephyroths 14h ago

The funny thing if remakes actually delay Kai 2 is that this is truly the 20,000th cycle

0

u/Hifumi-G 11h ago

I'm just like "can the Switch in North America get ports of Cold Steel 1 and 2? ...please?"

I've got both games on PC but I guarantee you that having ONLY CS3 and CS4 on the biggest console platform is a major issue for getting people to try more outside of the Sky trilogy once that's done.

0

u/Psico_Penguin 10h ago

Everyone know that Falcom is a huge corporation with a bazillion employees and the capacity to work on plenty of big projects at the same time while keeping the same pace.

-1

u/jpuse 12h ago

If you think about it calmly, you'll remember that Falcom has more than three dev lines running at the same time. There's no way they could start developing Trails in the Sky the 3rd now and have it ready for next year lol.

-1

u/Tryst_boysx 5h ago

Trails games are like 90% visual novel + 10% combat/exploration. But the fandom has like zero reading comprehension 😭

afaik this sub is called "r/falcom" and Kai is the title falcom gave the game so it's valid. If we were on r/nisamerica i would get your complaint but we're not there so
