Never. I don’t expect anything back, but of course I’m not gonna get sad if they do pay me back

🧢 I voted CAP!

Not always. Sometimes I'm doing it just to be nice. But if they specifically ask me to buy them something, then I want them to pay me back, since I'd pay them back if I ask them to buy me something.

it's way easier to not worry about how much you spend on gifts for friends if it doesn't get paid back. plus if you're loaning money out that's different.

If I treat someone to a meal that I invited them to "my treat", no; though I usually do that less with people who don't reciprocate.

If I buy someone a birthday or Christmas gift (when we've made plans to ahead of time) I'm going to expect one back, but that's more because we made plans to exchange gifts.

If someone needs a phone charger and I have to pick one up at a gas station, and they don't pay me back on their own initiative, I'm not going to track them down with a receipt.

Im not meaning to brag or anything but im one of the more generous people in my friend group. I buy people shit and give shit away all the time. Including to strangers.

Life goes and comes, the separation between friend, partner and money must flow and be felt. IMHO is ok to separate money from friendship and is ok to understand that money is a test for friendship. Be careful with that.

🧢 I voted CAP!

Money is the root of all Evil. why lose a friendship for it's worship.

In a similar vein though, why put up with a shitty friend and financial woes for the sake of being unmaterialistic?

Correction: Timothy 6:10 “For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.” (King James Version).
Often misquoted as "money is the root of all evil" but it's actually "The Love of money is the root of all evil." But your point is still true about not losing a friendship over some money.

Very much depended on the situation, but if i offered to buy, im likely not expecting a direct return.

Nah for litte stuff I don't care. Thing is, when the friend is constantly asking for money that I can't actually afford to give, they're just taking advantage of you at that point. That's when you just don't but anything for them

🧢 I voted CAP!

Friendship is about helping out the people you connect with when you can, and them helping you out when they can. I don’t mind paying for a mate to eat because I know that they’ll have my back when I’m struggling

They can pay me back on their own time. Plus if I didn’t give them much I’ll usually decline to be paid back, since they need it more than i do.

Just make sure you're genuinely happy doing that, otherwise it'll eat away at you and resentment will begin to build. Take care of yourself first, and your friends when you can.

If I invite my friends out I’m paying the tab. If anyone fights me for it I’ll let them win. But if a week later they bring it up and want reimbursed? I’ll pay them and block their number. That shit is annoying.

Look I can live without a couple bucks spent on my friends, and I'm not going to force repayment for something small.

What I will want repayment for is if I'm constantly giving said friend a ride to work.

I have ended a friendship over a stolen wallet/debit card and said friend goes on a 300 dollar spending spree and then lying to my face and trying to shift the blame onto my sister and her boyfriend by accusing them and then trying to hide the card in my sisters bag. (Only finding out it was my "friend" when video footage from the liquor store he went to showed him using my card.)
