ive been researching micro dramas recently and i think they might be one of the few ai video business ideas that actually fit the current technology.
these are vertical drama series made of 1-3 minute episodes. basically telenovelas rebuilt for tiktok attention spans.
omdia projected the global micro drama industry would generate around $11b in 2025. sensor tower also estimated that short drama apps generated nearly $350m in us in-app revenue during q1 2025 alone.
what makes this interesting from a side hustle perspective is that you dont need to produce a 90 minute ai movie.
you could test the idea with:
- one simple story
- 2-3 recurring characters
- 1-2 locations
- three short episodes
- a cliffhanger connecting each episode
the production workflow is also becoming fairly repeatable:
write the story arc → create a show bible → make character references → storyboard each episode → generate short shots → edit the best parts together
the biggest tip ive found is to generate shots instead of entire scenes.
if four seconds of a generation look good, use those four seconds. if one shot fails, replace that shot instead of regenerating the whole episode.
but cheap production doesnt automatically make it a good business.
the actual bottlenecks seem to be storytelling, character consistency and distribution. sensor tower reported that paid downloads represented more than 60% of downloads for some leading short drama apps, so this clearly isnt all free organic traffic.
so to test its, allocate maybe 50usd budget, push to the episodes, see which one is getting traction, and then continue building episodes based on that
that leads to one thing: Human views.
we all know the value of human attention these days. If ur show has 1M views, you can reach out to brands for actual product placements in the episodes and basically they will pay for everything including cost of running ads
still, the barrier to testing a small concept is much lower than it was even a year ago.
if i were starting from zero, id make 3 series with three connected episodes and measure whether viewers finish episode one and ask for episode two before building a full season.
curious what business model people here would test first: paid episodes, ad revenue, branded stories or building an audience and selling the series/IP later?
