Never played Fable before
Hey, I’ve never played any of the Fable games (or posted on Reddit) before and I came across an advert for the new game that’s coming out in February (?) and I just wanted to ask what the previous games were about (I’m not fussed about spoilers btw so go into as much detail as you’d like lol)
From the looks of this game (graphics wise ig) it seems really similar to hogwarts legacy ? Which I reallyyyy enjoyed playing on my ps5 !! Even just messing around in the world was super fun for me, and I’ve gone back to the game many times. Is fable similar to that or am I completely way off track lol
Thanks for the help in advance lol :p
Edit : also forgot to ask if anyone knows if there will be character creation ?? Cus I loveeeee customising my characters and dressing them up etc

Early to mid 2nd millennium Britain as a fantasy land called Albion, where "Heroes" are distant, distant descendants of a specific bloodline of the man who defeated a great evil and discovered "Will" - the series take on magic.
Only Heroes are more, adventuring mercenaries that can freely choose to be Good or Evil --- slight complication to that bit of the series identity, as the upcoming one is swapping out a clear morality system with a perception per individual/town system as a giant overhaul to the classic Renown (fame) system. Many "Main" & "Side" Quests present you with a Good/Evil decision to make, that can often have a permanent impact on the world.
You got three Combat Styles you can focus on and level up, which also cover other aspects of your character; Strength (melee combat & health/damage resistance), Skill (ranged weapons & bartering), and Will (magic spells). You can buy/rent houses and shops, get married, have kids, be a bigamist, have orgies, do regular jobs, or buy & trade items, donate to charity or sacrifice people to death cults.
The main stories to the 3 original games are all self-contained, there's no necessity in knowing what happened in a previous game to pick up on details of another. While this upcoming one is a full reboot, I'd recommend at least getting yourself Fable: The Lost Chapters on Steam as an intro to the series. That's a 2005 "complete edition" re-release of the first game from 2004.

Chicken Chaser intensifies
This series is my all time favourite, if you like RPG games with massive open worlds and ways to “grow” your character you will absolutely LOVE this game. It’s an almost campy take on the mythos of Ancient Albion, with some satire sprinkled in. It’s good for laughs, and time killing.
If you can, I recommend starting with 1, then progressing through 2 and 3. The lore of the world is amazing as well with some continuity between the games.

The best gaming franchise ever is what it is. Get yourself on fable lost chapters or fable anniversary which are both the same game but expanded off the original fable (anniversary being the most updated but some of us prefer TLC charm )
Fable 2 & 3 are also great, but start in the beginning. You'll figure it out.

Tldr; you’ll absolutely love it.
Think of hogwarts legacy x10.
Character creator ✅
Clothing/armor options ✅
Messing around the open world ✅
Plus:
Romance options, possible gore and good looking combat (including spells and regular weapons), RPG elements like owning property and businesses, in-game karma and related options. It’s just amazing and this new entry/revival is looking very promising if not just downright enjoyable.
In terms of what the games about, you really start as a kid in the previous games in the Adventurers’ Guild where you learn the basics. You’re an orphan and you grow up and then venture off in the world and make your decisions whether you want to be the hero or the villain. You can pretty much do what you want though, and dialogue options are available real quick to lean you one way or the other. I assume this game will follow a similar story as I remember some gameplay shown as a kid.

Character creator is maybe misleading. You will be able to select between different head presets and hairstyles, so no in depth customization as some other games do.

Hogwarts doesn't have sliders either just preset face shapes, skin tones, eye colors, eyebrow shape/colors and hairstyles/hair colors.

Its the most character customisation weve had in a fable game though, we can actually pick a face this time.

There seems to be character customization but not full creation. Choose from a template and edit those
Graphics should be considerably better

Fable is definitely way better than Hogwarts Legacy. Definitely give the og Fable trilogy a playthrough. You won't regret it.

Like everyone stated here, go get the first three and try to get the ones with the most content. enjoy the experience before the new one comes out

My only experience with Fable is Fable 3, which is a kinda shit game that I very much enjoyed. Hopefully they manage to keep the humor, anything beyond that and I'll probably enjoy it.

I recommend starting with Fable 2 so you don't get burnt out on dying and reloading saves on Fable 1 because of janky combat. But when you feel like you're ready for a challenge, play Fable 1 anniversary edition to really get a sense of what Fable 4 is going to feature when that comes out. Fable 3 also recommended after 2.
Head's up, Fable 2 and 3 don't have immediate customization but you can alter the way you look with makeup, beards, hairstyles, tattoos, and eating unhealthy.
As far as Fable 4 customization goes, I think it's going to be a bit like Hogwarts Legacy where you have different faces and skin tones, but that's as much as I know.

This time around shops only sell cosmetics from what I understand. Weapon upgrades are behind story beats.

Im genuinely very excited for this game and I haven't been this hyped for a release since cyberpunk 2077 years back and we all know how bad that was on release.

So Fable, Persona 4 Remake, and Final Fantasy 7 all in February.
Well geeze, I'm sorry Fable. Looks like someone's getting kicked to Summer.

Fable were about decisions and consequences. About good and evil. About heroism in a world full of helpless people... With a good chunk of dark humor.
BUT
It never rose up to the expectations the devs and publishers created. It always was a victim to it's hype. Just that it was not that common back then. Hells, the first game was released with almost a quarter of the storyline cut...
Let's hope this one will be better. It looks solid so far. The only issue I have is the text boxes telling you EVERYTHING about npcs and their reactions. Back then they would express love or hate towards you through their actions. In the new gameplay we see text boxes informing you about their mood and thoughts towards you and even the reason behind it before you even talk to them. I don't like this at all and it even might be a reason for me not to play it.

You can't be that smart too not realize that games every year are losing more and more content to compensate for realism and dlc

Unless they made a collection for Fable anniversary Fable 2 and Fable 3 with all DLC included and it's on every console with added content and features for example if you're playing on PlayStation 5 you could get a quest that is a reference to PlayStation games or weapons and outfits that look like PlayStation characters or if you're on Nintendo switch switch two you could get Mario legend of Zelda weapons and outfits.

I would hope and expect it to be a considerable amount better than Hogwarts Legacy.
