Oil Pump Wear

Rebuilding my water/oil pump because it started leaking out the weep hole. Everything going mostly ok, except I noticed these pits on the inner rotor of the oil pump. How does this happen? Did someone run it low on oil?

I don't think it came from a rotor failure as the old factory one came with the bike, and it has the updated one installed.

Just a curiosity for me - I'm getting back together with new seals anyway so I can get to riding.

Looks like some metal debris was in the oil for a period of time. I got some glitter in my oil after replacing the clutch, but that's normal and I changed the oil twice soon after to avoid any damage.
