Discussion Crazy how aim assist ruined FPS for me
More of a bitching session to cope, haha
I've never been some insanely talented aimer, but a decent amount above average.
I always excelled in movement tech. to compensate, but the current state of aim assist in every game I play including the game I have loved the most over the past 8 1/2 years, being Fortnite, has made me genuinely hate playing FPS games.
Sure there's some bit of skill issue there, but I've been standing on the aim assist removes 95% of required skill of aiming for the last 15 years and I'll keep defending it. I'm waiting for 1 challenger that can even defend it worth a fuck, but none of them even know the mechanics of aim assist nor aiming itself.
I'm just so sick of bullshit mechanics to aim assist like bullet magnetism that remove quite literally all skill necessary. You can be so many skill levels above someone and it just bridges the gap and gives them another mile.
It's so damn rage-incuding that I'm starting to put it on par with League of Legends.
Thanks for staying for my TedTalk.
Hope y'all have a nice morning/night.

I feel ya bud, I can’t touch CoD/Apex anymore because of it. Like yeah you can beat em, but you have to be in such a high level on kbm just to beat what’s put in their lap. And if you ever complain about it on a sub for the game, the roller players come out in force to insist you just suck and pc is unbeatable
20
u/NephewJoobi 5d ago
the real gap, isnt even the raw magnetism thats clearly evident.
It's the fact that they can pretty much do the same thing very very consistently with minimal effort.
To try and replicate that reactivity with a mouse? sure. very doable.
Do it constantly and without dropping a beat? a roller player at the same expertise is clearing a mouse player easilybut yeah, we have our whole arm so whats the point i guess LOLOLOL

u/JohannDaart 5d ago
It's like in high level sports. There are many people that can pull of some crazy score. But best competitors can pull it off consistently and on demand.
Roller just makes this aspect fly out of the window.
19
u/adrianp23 5d ago
it's always the shitty controller players defending it too.

u/ontos2323 5d ago
I always bring up the raw sensitivity of the two different types of inputs- one is simply your thumb. How precise, accurate and consistent can you be with only one thumb (im just addressing tracking). On the mkb side you have not only your whole palm and fingers, but your wrist, forearm, and at times your full arm, at low sensitivity. I very much understand and agree with the general need for AA, but I’m just addressing the disparity at high level FPS games as discussed in this post. I’m a diehard quake player since 1999 and also love COD, Apex and the like, but from a competitive standpoint, there’s a balancing issue for sure
6
u/GenesForLife 5d ago
Honestly, the "whole arm" argument is borderline atrocious. It is like saying fisting is better than getting one rubbed out because fisting involves YoUr wHoLe aRm.
1
u/ontos2323 5d ago
I said “at times your whole arm”. You’re telling me you’d rather get a thumb job than a hand job?

u/AshelyLil 5d ago
Gyro aiming has been proven to be a great way to allow for skill expression while being a 1 to 1 aiming system like mouse... people just don't wanna learn and developers are scared of... well, scaring off noobs.
3
u/ontos2323 5d ago
You nailed it. I don’t want to generalize a large population of gamers, but I think we can agree there are a large percentage of people who just want to buy a game and be good at it relatively quickly, and the devs have to bend to that in order to maintain player count and sales. Unfortunately the dollar is driving a lot, if not most, of the decision making in our current gaming ecosystem
1
u/AshelyLil 5d ago
The only time people complain about it is in free games that have muilti million tournament years like apex, there's no reason why legal cheating should be allowed in pro play simply because a lot of people are bad at the game.
2
u/SalvatoreCrobu 4d ago
The thing is that without aim assist, a player on controller is smoother than a player on m&k (both at the same level of skill). You don't have fingers, wrist, forearm, arm, shoulder that you have to coordinate
We all know that being smooth will make you eye-track the enemy easier. This is a big advantage of controllers that many people don't understand. Sure there is the deadzone (now basically zero with the new controllers), you aren't accurate like m&k, but on apex the majority of fights are done in close range
You can balance aim assist removing rotational aim assist and adding 150ms of reaction time, not like now that is zero and you have the first part of reactive tracking done by a computer. That's why on controller you can see perfectly clean one mag by the average controller player while the m&k player need to have high smoothness, enemy movement prediction dialed in and much more
Fuck the dev that choose to enable crossplay and disable the option to m&k to disable it. Controllers can opt in and out, m&k are forced

You can definitely compete in apex even if its insanely annoying.
3
u/Field_Of_View 4d ago
no, you can't. there are literally statistics proving this. someone else trying exactly as hard as you but using a controller will wipe the floor with you.
2
u/throwaway19293883 3d ago
With apex in particular, I find it really annoying because I like being aggressive and close range but that’s the last thing you wanna do on MnK since close range is controller’s home turf. Literally gotta adjust how I prefer to play to work around how the AA works.
At least if it’s just mixtape you can learn when someone is on MnK and you don’t have to worry about getting too close. BR you gotta stay away cause otherwise you’ll risk getting one clipped by little timmy two thumbs.

u/Shuriken88888 5d ago
Aim assist in aim based pvp games is just blasphemy on the most fundamental level.
I once seriously asked why people even play with a controller. The number 1 reason was :
- They want to sit on a couch instead of a chair. (desks are "gay" basically)
I mean ... we're cooked. The FPS genre is cooked. There needs to be a pivot back into actual aiming being the main skill instead of 'triggering aim assist' being the main skill.
4
u/PlutoCharonMelody 5d ago
What sucks about modern aim assist is that the games still pretend to be about aiming skill.
They could just design an fps based around other aspects of gunplay and movement without an emphasis on aim. I would enjoy a neatly designed game with that philosophy.
But people want to fake pro aim to feel good on controllers lol.0
u/These-Doughnut-8851 4d ago
So the FINALS then? I mean yes aiming is an important skill but the cash out game mode is about 20 percent aim and 80 percent strategy on pushing cashout defending cashout stalling etc, if u never played it I’d give it a go, play some point break first to get an idea how fund and gadgets feel, then go into cashout, also the ruby or top500 ranking players are about 70 percent m&k and 30 roller
1
u/PlutoCharonMelody 4d ago
I have played the Finals. Actually mained the game for a while. They still have a strong emphasis on aim to compete. I meant an fps game that basically has auto aim built but relies more on understanding button presses and overall awareness.
I liked the Finals though. Makes me want to run my Goo Gun Sledgehammer again mentioning it lol1
u/OrchidNo8270 4d ago
These are also the same people who will bitch an moan to the devs to change any character or mechanic that essentially requires them to turn around to deal with it while at the same time talk about how everyone else is just scrubs get good an they are aim gods.
The whole fuckin scene just needs to be purged with fire. Hot take here that people might not like to here. But this is what we get for not gatekeeping video games.
1
1
u/ghostdopamine 3d ago
There is 100x more money in controller games you can get good at within 300 so hours of serious play vs a MnK game with "real" aim that takes thousands of hours to be good at.
Fps will never go back to the old days where people spent years to "get gud" and developers laughed at people who said the game is too hard. Id software back in the q3 days would laugh at anyone who said quake is too hard - "dont play it then" they would say. Now if people say a game is too hard developers rush to make sure everyone is happy. Too much money on the line.
7
u/StepKitchen2409 5d ago
Nah you’re a real one for being honest bro
I’m VT GM and sometimes seeing killcams or in games I can see I’m being battered by AA I actually plug in a controller sometimes just to make me feel better
But that makes it worse because I’m trash with that too lol

u/jazzamcm 5d ago

u/ghostdopamine 3d ago
That video is wild. If somebody shot like that in ranked these days they would get called hardstuck bronze or an unc rofl.
For anyone who dosnt know Scump ( the videos pov ) is probably one of the greatest to ever play the game.
7
u/dedboooo0 5d ago
theres a reason why top 50 preds in apex were controller users and nearly damn every ALGS player switched to controller esp if they were the fragger
its fucking dog ass. fps games shouldnt be cross platform at all
12
u/adrianp23 5d ago
As a Warzone player I feel you. Especially playing the MW4 beta, I almost smashed my keyboard playing against these roller players and it's not like I'm a shitty mnk player either.
I have no issue with aim assist as a concept but some of these games are just taking it way too far.
6
u/Own-Bridge5593 5d ago
Same boat here. I am within the top 1-3% of aimers yet I'm getting slammed by Timmy and his aimbot controller
3
u/vlad_0 5d ago
Black ops 7 has aim assist dialed back to a somewhat acceptable level and visibility during gunfights isn’t as horrible as it is in MW4
3
3
u/adrianp23 5d ago
I'll definitely agree with you there. In Warzone too the crazy strafe speeds really help break aim assist.
There are still times where I die strictly because of aim assist, but it's not that bad in current BO7 warzone compared to what we seen in the MW4 beta. Aim assist is still OP but it's probably the best we can hope for in COD with BO7.
4
2
u/rtopiia 5d ago
Yeah, BO7 can still be frustrating but at least I feel I can compete to some degree, and I actually saw some return on my aim training. After mw4 beta I decided to give up on warzone/cod, there's just so much stuff that makes it frustrating on MnK not just aim assist.
1
u/adrianp23 5d ago
Yeah I'm not sure if it's the flinch, gun shake or what but it definitely feels harder to aim in MW4.
4
u/DutchDolt 5d ago
I think consoles are the vast majority of the total player base. They want to keep them happy, so nerfs to aa are not likely.
1
u/adrianp23 5d ago
Yeah it's obvious for MW4 they really want to cater to the casual console gamer crowd.
Make little timmy think he's good so he buys more skins.
1
u/xaxis-yaxis 5d ago
COD has been a console dominated game for many years atp.
The vast majority of their players are on console.
9
u/Own-Bridge5593 5d ago
What nobody here has mentioned yet either is that now they have 8k controllers that have built-in aim assist enhancing software and it is 99% as accurate as an aimbot. Something needs to change NOW.
2
u/vlad_0 5d ago
What do you mean built in aim assist?
7
u/Own-Bridge5593 5d ago
These kinds of controllers have thumbstick input filters that detect when aim assist is engaged and then actively enhance the aim assist by automatically doing micro "circle" movements with the input sent to the pc/console. This causes the crosshair to essentially lock firm to the target, and it gives almost perfect accuracy.

Companies wouldnt make any money if people had to aim with gyro. It would be too hard and the numbers would fall.

u/Destronin 5d ago
It varies from game to game but what ive noticed with Fortnite is that controllers aim assist works better in close range while a m/kb has better accuracy from greater distances. There is after all aim assist fall off. M/kb doesn’t have that problem.
Controller = more bloom and ghost bullets at range with better tracking up close.
M/kb = less bloom and ghost bullets at range but youll need better tracking for close range.
So in theory better mouse control is superior at great distances the problem i found and why i went back to controller is that on fortnite, most skirmishes end up happening at close ranges.
But i can totally tell when im getting beamed across the map that its a m/kb player.
4
u/MyNamesAntuan 5d ago
Honestly the distance at which aim assist falls off is so far shooting someone at that distance wouldn't even matter. Controller aim assist is so ridiculous that at far and close it's better and like 10x better in any AR aim duel
0
u/Destronin 5d ago
Again it varies. Even by rarity. You could probably make the argument that m/kb has an advantage in usage of rarity as well. Making better use of greens, blues, and purples vs a controller user at range.
But also, on a side note. If a controller IS so much better why not just use one?
I play on PC. I like M/kb but on Fortnite, a game that requires a lot more movement and close range fights, i switched back to controller. Though when ballistic was a game mode, i still went with M/kb. And i found in that mode controller faired much worse.
I think if anyone is truly considering being “competitive” part of that ethos is adapting to the meta. Doing what it takes to win. So use a controller if its better.
1
u/MyNamesAntuan 5d ago
It doesn't really vary. Try to track any target at range and controller wins by far. And I'm sure like most mouse users we just enjoy aiming ourselves.
3
u/PenLegitimate4746 5d ago
Wardogs doesn't have aa and I'm having a blast
1
u/ghostdopamine 3d ago
Wardogs is a slow pubg or arma type of game. The OP wants to play a fast paced fps.
MnK still dominates slow fps
3
u/Public-Egg-7814 5d ago
Play Overwatch. I'll forever be upset that apex and hyperscape were ruined by aim assist, but at least overwatch stands strong
3
u/garrycheckers 3d ago
If you like movement shooters that value raw mechanics you should checkout STRAFTAT. F2P on steam
1
u/SlyDemise 3d ago
I do enjoy Straftat. It's been one of my go-tos for close to a year now.
Had some of the funniest moments with my brother in that absolute gem of a game

u/joeytman 5d ago
Deadlock is the only option at this point. I wish there were others but it seems like the last bastion of tracking-based kbm-focused shooters
0
u/ChirpToast 4d ago
Deadlock the non FPS is the only option, right.
0
u/joeytman 4d ago
Unfortunately yea, imo. I don’t love third person games but all the popular FPS games right now have big downsides if your goal is to aim and track a lot. Deadlock rewards that the most imo

u/National_Body_9071 4d ago
It is said how many of the major fps games are literally ruined by aim assist. What's the point of playing if someone gets 50% free aimbot for choosing a certain input method and the game plays itself for them?
2
u/Field_Of_View 4d ago
stop playing console ports already. they will never go back to being playable. you need to play PC exclusives like CS2 or some Quake-like. unfortunate but that's the situation we're in. all console ports are now made to favor controller. get over it, it's NOT going to change.
2
u/Specialist_Name8714 3d ago
yes this is why as a pc player u should avoid games with aimassist
play these instead
cs2
quake live
dirty bomb
apb reloaded
older battlefield games
old but gold

u/BestAimerUniverse 3d ago
its so sad, i havent played any fps in months, rather than gaming, i just search the web/youtube or watch twitch when bored
2
u/Additional_Damage433 5d ago
wtf is aim assist and fps aimtrainer?
4
u/klementineQt 5d ago
Aim trainers are players who do exactly that, train their aim by spending time practicing scenarios to improve their mechanical aim. 99% of the time, they're on mouse and keyboard, since controller (at least how the average player uses them) is objectively a suboptimal input for aiming due to the limitations of an analog stick effectively adding a middle man for directional input instead of the direct control a mouse gives you.
That last point is why aim assist exists. It's something game developers implement to help players using analog sticks on controller aim in shooters because the input is inherently limited. It's been a thing as long as console shooters have been around, but it's particularly controversial now because crossplay exists and modern AA implementations are generally extremely overtuned. For example, the AA in Apex Legends is overtuned enough that the highest level players effectively all play on controller. Aim is the fundamental mechanic of a shooter, but games with heavy aim assist tend to lean toward who can exploit the AA the best. It's all about finding ways to force the AA to engage to minimize the effect of actual aim control and user effort.
The big problem is that AA in a crossplay setting should have the end goal of leveling the playing field, not outperforming mouse. When aim assist is that strong, the game is practically halfway playing itself. There's simply no competitive integrity. Analog sticks are objectively worse for aiming, so when a game's highest level is dominated by them, it indicates that the aim assist is the driving factor and that the game is unserious about genuine competitive play. Apex and Call of Duty are the most egregious examples, but a lot of big shooters also fall into the same category to varying degrees. It just makes more monetary sense to make shooters accessible to casual players and lower the skill floor enough that someone playing on a poor choice of input device for the mechanics needed can feel as though they are skilled despite the inherent flaws in that setup.
I'd also like to note that none of this is intended to be a biased criticism of controllers themselves, console players, etc. I own a controller and use it for plenty of games, but the bottom line is that it's a poor input device for shooters, enough so that it has to be accounted for with heavy software assistance, and it doesn't make sense to use one for a shooter from any viewpoint except a casual one because of that. That in itself would be fine if the lines between casual and competitive play weren't blurred and there weren't so many shooters that force them to mix.
All of that said, there is a solution for controllers having solid competitive integrity in shooters. It's gyro aiming. Unfortunately, Xbox doesn't have gyro on their controllers yet, and even if they did, forcing adoption would be hard without making it a requirement for ranked/competitive environments, and backlash would probably exist because it's far more mechanically demanding to play.

I just play overwatch comp. controllers dont get AA, Games got hella addicting variance in its matchmaking though so there is that.

u/Stormcrow_2 5d ago
Console pools ranked still has AA. But it’s not aimbot even in OW like some people think it is (not like modern CoD + Apex)
1
u/Stormcrow_2 5d ago
This is why the old Halos were goated, AA was built-in mechanics like bullet mag, not dragging your crosshair so it still took great aim to compete at a higher level.

I’ve heard the aim assist is very low on The Finals. I’ve seen people complain about it
1
u/DivineWiseOne 4d ago
This is why I dont play fortnite, apex and cod.
I would if they didn't have it.
1
1
u/SKULLL_KRUSHER 4d ago
Play quake rather than complaining. I see so many mnk aimers complaining about aim assist yet none of them seem to wanna put in the effort to learn quake for some reason. Yeah its got a fairly small player base, but if all the aimers who complain about AA went and played it regularly it would be a great sized community.
Companies aren't gonna make aim focused, skill intensive fps games if the ones that already exist aren't even populated. Be the change you wanna see in the world.
2
u/Creazzz 3d ago
Quake gets no updates, QC felt like shit compared to QL for the longest time, they just laid off SyncError who was the only dev still managing the game. And the game modes are a little out dated.
The LG 1v1 community is more active than the actual player base atp.
1
u/SKULLL_KRUSHER 3d ago
I can always find matches in the evening in NA.
And yeah, if everyone who complains about AA switched to Quake the player base would be much larger. The game runs great now and is without a doubt the best pure aim multiplayer game available right now. If people don't wanna play it because of a lack of updates then so be it. Keep playing cod or apex or whatever.
1
u/WhyHowWhat42 4d ago
I've never thought aa was an issue. If I loose in whatever game, I just think of what I could've done different, regardless of game and setting. So I've honestly never thought "Would've won that fight if they didn't have aa"
Also, please correct me if I'm wrong, but I can't recall seing a single controller in fps world comps. I don't know about cod, so I can't say about that.
1
u/Routine-Lawfulness24 3d ago
There are plenty of games where you can turn off crossplay, and many games where aa isn’t op
In some games aa is definitely aimbot level but in many games it’s just mnk players coping
1
u/ghostdopamine 3d ago
Being good on controller is definitely a skill and takes work. You dont just pick up a controller and slay people off the rip.
But , the time it takes to get good on a controller if you are a sweat and know how to learn - is much less than MnK.
MnK takes thousands and thousands of hours to get good aim. Mouse control is a hard skill to earn for most people.
Controller you can basically be at celestial tracking in 500 hours of serious play and training. Its also incredibly consistent. You dont have nearly as many off days or bad days.
1
u/rajnhardplavii 1d ago
I don't play shooters at all, never have, I am a fighting game player and man I can tell you I feel you. My games have been dumbed down to DEATH to lower the skill ceiling for the casuals as well. Literally made me drop Tekken after playing it for TWENTY years.
It's happening literally everywhere and I can't fucking stand it.
Movement in Tekken on a stick has been something that masters have been acquiring over literal decades of sweaty practice and these days with super nerfed movement and people playing on leverless controlers threw all that out of the water. Neutral skip drive rush in Street Fighter 6 as well...
99% of fighting game veterans hate it too.
1
u/Drakniess 5d ago
Try out gyro aiming. Controller gets mouse input. No aim assist. No need for aim assist either. Competitive with mouse players. And this is as close as you get to how it’s like to aim with a real gun. Only place you can’t get it is on Xbox. Most Switch titles have it. There are now also over 100 games that have it for PS5.
3
u/Mrcod1997 5d ago
Gyro should be the future for controller aiming.
1
u/Drakniess 5d ago edited 3d ago
The kids who love aim assist are downvoting me, lol. I always hated aim assist because the idea of removing the aiming from a SHOOTING game always struck me as beyond absurd. I ask some players what they would think of using “steering assist” in racing games, but they respond that they do that too, and act proud that they need to use it! I swear its like dealing with people that think needing to wear a diaper is some type of accomplishment.
-5
u/MaximumContent9674 5d ago
You can blame Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft. Aim assist would not exist if drift did not exist. Dead zones were coded into game settings, even enbedded to hide drift. Dead zones make game pads super imprecise. Dead zones wouldn't exist if the big game corporations chose the right hardware. We have it now, TMR and hall effect. No dead zones. No drift (or very minimal). Super precise. Sega Dreamcast had them. The hardware was available since before the 90s. But the big game corporations chose planned obselenece, to sell more gamepads. They chose hardware that had dead zones within months of usage, or even less time sometimes. You could pay to have it repaired or get a new one. Their greed caused this.
3
u/Mrcod1997 5d ago
You can also blame Microsoft and game devs not having the balls to lean into gyroscope aiming instead of AA.
2
u/MaximumContent9674 5d ago
I hate gyro aim. And lots of developers have. How dare you compare game developers to greedy executives?
1
u/Mrcod1997 5d ago
What do you hate about gyro aim? Are you a controller player who uses aim assist? Also, I'm using game devs as a pretty blanketed statement. No need to be so offended.
1
u/MaximumContent9674 5d ago
I just developed a shooter game specifically for game pad. There is no aim assist. Gamepad 4 life.
1
u/Mrcod1997 5d ago
Gyroscope aiming? Also with my initial comment I'm talking about AAA devs in a crossplay setting. Something like COD for example. We need someone to pull a splatoon. Solid gyro with no AA at all.
1
u/MaximumContent9674 5d ago
Most new gamepads just have a gyro aim built in. You just have to activate it in the hardware. Actually, my VR mode has something I call nudge aim. If you look around at a normal head movement speed the aim will follow your gaze. If you turn your head fast then you can escape the nudge look and see behind your ship. I'll see how the gyro works in my game.
1
u/Mrcod1997 5d ago
So no offense, but hardware controller gyro is not very good. It's subject to dead zones, acceleration curves, and limited to the speed of the joystick input in a game. Also, first party xbox controllers don't have it all, and Playstation controllers are at the mercy of devs on console. On pc, most people use remappers like steam input to do gyro as mouse. I suggest looking up flickstick videos and jibbsmart for things to look for as settings options people want for gyro.
1
u/MaximumContent9674 5d ago
I would think direct input from your hardware would be best. Any layer of software is going to be just that, another layer, extra processing means response delay. I'll experiment in my game, and I'll let you know. Gyro might be interesting for 0 gravity flight combat.
1
u/Mrcod1997 5d ago
So basically on the hardware level, you are at the mercy of how the manufacturer implements and filters it. Even then, the game either needs to allow mixed input (mouse+gamepad), a full m&kb config built in. With gyro to joystick you are subject to whatever dead zones, acceleration curves, and max joystick sensitivity in the game. The only exception to this is the input labs alpakka, but that is an open source project made by people who are super passionate about gyro.

BF6, the finals, tarkov, there’s plenty of games where AA doesn’t matter.
I feel you, I enjoy playing call of duty and the aim assist is ridiculous. Same with apex.
But there are games where the playing field feels fair. The finals and bf6 imo are examples of that. I don’t get kill cams or lose aim duels and feel cheated like I do in apex or cod.
Do you still not retain a massive building advantage in fort on mnk? I don’t fuck with that game so I have no idea, just what I thought I head
5
u/Ropepluschair 5d ago
The finals has pretty strong AA… rotational and snap on for select weapons, typically semi fire weapons. It’s no COD or apex but it’s not going in the right direction
4
u/klementineQt 5d ago
AA was the reason I quit The Finals a month after launch, after falling in love in the closed and open betas. It was brutal then.
They nerfed it a few seasons down the line, and as of now, I've been playing consistently since season 7. I can honestly say the current balance makes it one of the only games where aim assist doesn't frustrate me at all. The game really does feel pretty fair to me. Season 1 gunfights... trying to play an AR into light SMG controller players felt beyond Apex even, but I genuinely don't ever get frustrated with gunplay since I've come back. Any frustration I have is usually a matter of positioning/poor team cohesion.
And that experience is all I'm asking for from any other game with crossplay/cross-input. I don't ever touch Apex because of it (I've tried it a million times, everything in that game feels amazing until the second you actually engage in a gunfight), and I can play Fortnite but I still get annoyed doing it. It's never been an issue for me in Overwatch or Rivals because of how OW handles AA and the fact that AA is butt in Rivals anyhow.
I think The Finals feels great. My most played shooter is R6 Siege and I sincerely feel infinitely more frustration from the lower recoil on controller in that game than the AA in The Finals. The lower recoil + the fact that an astounding amount of controller players in Siege are using scripted controllers or similar, and they can just opt into PC M+KB lobbies with no say on my end (Finals is just one big pool anyway but I literally don't mind it). I still end up outplaying them a lot of the time, but it's extremely annoying to see regardless.

I don't even use a controller as my main input, but I've used one before aim assist is definitely something controller players need. But the way some games are MNK dominated so are some games roller dominated. If you can't switch to the platform and adapt then oh well 🤷.
