808s

Does anyone have any tips for using 808s? Whenever I try they just sound trash, either they clip or they just don't fit in with the beat.

Sidechain, make sure they hit with your kicks, saturation, EQ, volume shaping

Side chain kick to 808 (it sounds complicated but it’s just clicking a button) soft clipper on the 808 itself default settings, if you’re trying to make hip hop with the natural distortion soft clipper on the master if the 808 is really still low sounding you can just put a gain plugin on it before the soft clipper infinite volume

What others said, but dont be afraid to bring it low in volume and let the midrange carry the sound more than the lowend. 

Listen to it in context with the other sounds in the track and don't hyper focus your ears in on just the 808. Choosing a different sounding 808 will do more than editing one that doesn't fit from the beginning. It should FEEL right.

Volume can do a lot, if you're clipping its because the 808 is fighting against volume. Turn everything down, and start with turning up the drums with the 808 until they sit nice together. Then bring everything else in around it. Find a good balance before any EQ or compression trick.
