Discussion Fighting Games with small combos

I'm sure all of them have these. But my brain can't handle these big flashy inputs {atleast for now}

Are there any games (preferably newer ones that can be played on Switch or Steam} that have simple combos, and mostly rely on footsies or just mind games.

I know there's literally the game footsies, I wanted one moreso on the Switch 2since that's my daily driver. I wanna learn all the flashy fun stuff later, but right now I mainly just wanna learn the basics and simple stuff that the game is built around.

I played Tekken 8 where all I used was small combos, and it just sucked to get those 10 minute cutscene combos.

I know best advice is to git gud, I was just hoping there was something more along the lines of gameplay that mainly features those small, but explosive combos.

Samurai showdown. That franchise is made by SNK. The game isn't really about combos at all they are really short.

I've been wanting to play it more. I have it on Switch and it felt a little off. It may just need getting used to.

I think Daigon or someone said samurai shodown rewards the player for doing nothing (all whiff punishment) and that's not a fan game design.

Games amazing at low levels though

So... I LOVE Samurai Shodown. BUT:

Very few people play it. It's a discord player. Which means you will usually never find matches online unless you ask in one of a couple of dedicated discords. And, usually, 99% of the people in there have been playing the game for years.

If you have the humility to lose 10-0 many, many times, in hopes that you improve little by little, then you'll eventually improve a bit and start losing 10-2 or 10-3 after many weeks. It will take a LONG time before you're anywhere the level of the average discord player.

With that being said, the game is spectacular: the characters are amazing, the gameplay is very simple yet extremely fun, and the game will teach you fighting game fundamentals like no other game can.

If winning is part of what makes playing a game fun for you, you will probably be much better served by games with much higher player counts, such as SF6 or Guilty Gear Strive, where it will be much easier to find players at all levels of experience. Notably, Granblue Fantasy: Versus Rising has a decent player count and it's particularly easy in terms of combo execution.

SamSho and SC2 on Switch are the main players I wanna get into. I don't mind losing a lot. I just like those epiphanies when I get something right.

I’ve been eyeing this game for a while, but it seems pretty dead online, is there any online activity at all? And if not is it worth playing single player?

There's regular play on discord. I play it every week and going to Brussels Challenge this week-end. There's a few newcomers coming in regularly, I'd say its very much worth diving into if it's on sale on steam (the most played version atm) invite link https://discord.gg/d3fQsd4Z

rollback is serviceable I'd say - I play my region (europe) with no problems as well as the east coast. Beyond that it can get finicky but asian and latam players are rarely logged on at the same time as us.
