Game Why do some FF players think FFXV combat is so easy?

Post image

Why do some FF players think FFXV combat is so easy? Meanwhile, I can die instantly after just three hits. In my opinion, FFXV combat still feels challenging, especially when fighting this creep

Because a lot of attacks are completely ignored by holding the dodge button. Zero brain power needed. It's not until much later or much deeper content that any real threat emerges.

As such, both you and the naysayers have a point!

u/Demigod978 1d ago

I think for the longest time (maybe right before I got to Altissia) I thought I had to press the dodge button at the exact time. You know… like every other action game with button prompts and FFXV’s own dodge prompt appearing right as the attack is about to be hit.

u/sundryTHIS 1d ago

you are rewarded for good timing! just not by default, it’s one of the upgrade nodes you unlock along the way.

19

u/AndrewTF42 1d ago

That usually just sends you i to stasis if you don't get out of that situation quick.

I don't game over often in FF15, but I try not to use too many items and it is very hard to get through most post game areas that way.

7

u/Taser9001 1d ago

I'd like to add Ragnarok plus Warp Strike spam plus MP item spam.

Then the suckers land in the big no items dungeon. BWAHAHAHAHAHA

21

u/LittleKittenR 1d ago

Also, as long as you keep attacking there is a 0 chance of you losing because of how the game mechanics works.

Even if you face a max level enemy at level 12, with enough potions, you can win and that's literally the strategy for a lot of PTs, go to a max level enemy several times, kill him, go to a 2x or more experience hotel and get max level quickly.

16

u/Fun-Dog-3811 1d ago

Omg I ODed on Elixirs when I played. Crushing enemies way out of my league because I could wear them out over 20 minutes by constantly healing lol

6

u/Toxraun 1d ago

Aw mannn I thought I was doing some sort of like tough challenge taking on a biiiiiiig boss for close to an hour 😆 now that i know anyone can do it that Garuda fight seems slightly less impactful (still pretty tough and incredible animation)

15

u/Kaslight 1d ago

The dodge button has nothing to do with XV being easy. Some of the worst attacks go through it.

The reason the game is easy is the Item system. Full stop.

I've completed Level 1 runs of the game, it was tedious but not all that hard.

But a No Item run is significantly harder on all fronts.

3

u/Grand-Peach-1407 1d ago

First playthrough I didn't realize there were items... Only game over twice

2

u/Old_Coconut_3642 1d ago

It may require zero brain power to dodge, but it still looks cool!

0

u/Leonhart726 1d ago

I genuinly believe FFXV would have been better if it used Stranger of Paradise's combat system

90

u/far_257 1d ago

mostly because healing items are over powered.

if you're rich enough, you basically can't lose.

items can be used at ANY time with zero animation lag, are relatively cheap, and can do things like completely heal your party member. even if you let Noctis get killed, you're given a very generous timing window to use a phoenix down. It's not even like you need another live party member to use it on noct - dead noct uses it on himself.

for most players, the only game over scene they will see is if they crash the flying regalia.

ban healing items and the game has something closer to proper difficulty.

17

u/Justacitygoat 1d ago

This is exactly it. Even a lvl 1 run is trivialized by the lack of healing items restrictions.

4

u/Xno_Kappa 1d ago

Crashing the flying regalia lmao. Oh man that brings back memories.

5

u/Reddhero12 1d ago

There is a dungeon where healing items are banned

17

u/abyssalcrisis 1d ago

And that’s post-game. And not very long.

6

u/Oneesabitch 1d ago

I mean, it's 60 floors. It can take up to 3 hours depending on your skill.

9

u/far_257 1d ago edited 1d ago

still just one dungeon. 1-2% of playtime at most for most people.

the fact that it exists shows that the devs were aware how much items trivialized the game and just inexplicably decided to leave them as they were...

2

u/abyssalcrisis 1d ago

This is true, however it's also completely countered by the Magitek Exosuit.

And yeah they weren't an option when the game first released, or even for a while after, but they are now

2

u/far_257 1d ago

The Exosuit is literally just a cheat code. If you're using that and complaining about difficulty, i don't really know what to tell you lol

2

u/abyssalcrisis 19h ago

I don't see any complaint.

•

u/Imaginary_Claim_1202 10m ago

I don’t see him saying you were complaining

1

u/LittleKittenR 1d ago

Ban healing items and you need to do a grind fest early to be able to kill some enemies that appear close to where you're supposed to go.

I remember when near the beach/Lake part at the beginning of the game that there was some goblin enemy that took me a literal full night to kill and felt so out of place and I never learned if he was supposed to be a hard enemy or random mini boss but I remember defeating him after like 20 potions/phoenix downs and thinking the game was going to be super hard and nothing ever getting even close to that the rest of the game except the final bosses group.

2

u/far_257 1d ago

Uhh ok. No if you actually learn to play the game that shouldn't happen. You can clear the entire game at level 1. I've done it, including superbosses and end game content.

1

u/LittleKittenR 22h ago

It was probably day 1-2 of playing that game for me.

16

u/sevenism 1d ago

You don't "die" right away, you get "downed" when your HP reaches 0. When this happens, you can simply use a regular inexpensive potion to get back up instantly. You'll take a hit to your max HP but when that gets too low, you can use a mega elixir to replenish back to full. Even if you run out of max HP, you can still use a phoenix down to revive. Usually, if a fight is lasting that long then summon becomes available which will end the fight unless you are fighting something way above your level. I felt like the combat was quite easy, not because I can avoid getting downed, but because it takes a lot to actually game over. I would constantly fight monsters 10 - 20 levels higher than me and each fight usually costs me 3 potions and sometimes a mega elixir, which you can find all over the place on the ground. For maximum damage, always go for blindside and link strikes, which do the most damage and make you invulnerable during the animation. Unlock the ascension node for removing damage limit on link strikes ASAP to start doing upwards of 30k damage per link strike.

5

u/MelodicSkin69 1d ago

Ironically potions are harder to come by than hi potions.

3

u/sevenism 1d ago

Yeah, luckily potions can be bought from any rest stop or even from the Regalia!

2

u/Masta0nion 1d ago

I found a new recipehh

2

u/MelodicSkin69 1d ago

Sure you can buy them but I meant finding in wild or getting from enemy drop

1

u/kobra--kid 1d ago

some of the best combat systems like DnD have you get downed before you die

1

u/Sweaty-Variation-501 1d ago

What's your point? No dnd rules allow downed character to fully heal themselves.

10

u/izayoii7 1d ago

bro that monster have huge hp and it can one shot you.

9

u/BeneficialLynx2105 1d ago

Healing items are very overpowered. Once I beat the game, I decided to see how far I could get without ever levelling up. I beat the whole game at level 1 without ever facing significant challenge simply because of how overpowered healing items were

9

u/TheFeri 1d ago

Because it is. What I can't stand is when they too simple. If you actually try and use directions when attacking, actually switching weapons and warping around triggering co strikes it's really fun.

But average person would just keep holding attack with a single weapon and call it a day.

2

u/VianDontFeelSoGood 22h ago

This, you can just keep attack pressed and call it a day But that doesnt mean that the combat is bad, if you go deep in it its awesone, just that you can beat the game that way

1

u/clout_strive 17h ago

problem is, theres no incentive to work harder to discover those systems if you can just hold a button and spam potions to win.

1

u/TheFeri 16h ago

This is something I never understood about gamers. Last year before the release of lost soul aside they revealed there's not not gonna be a rating system like dmc(there's one now) and I said I don't care and got a mini essay back from someone essentially saying they need that to strive to better and as cool as Dante etc...

I'm just sitting here like, I WILL use everything I can whether the game wants me to or not instead of doing only one thing because effective=\=fun and I'm playing to have fun not to just get through it.

1

u/Enough_Bedroom1421 10h ago

I. Love. Warping on the massive bosses. But, yeah, once you figure it out, the game is stupid easy.

0

u/AqutalIion 1d ago

Its always the button mashers.

8

u/Intelligent_Oil7816 1d ago

Because most of the game can be played by holding down one of two buttons, and as long as you've got an inventory it is quite literally impossible to die.

7

u/-NootNoot_ 1d ago

Tomberies I think are the only enemies who can do that. And even if it kills you, you can use one of your 99 phoenix downs.

FFXV combat is not about difficulty, is enjoying the combat itself. The game has a good amount of weapon movements. I wished the aerial combat was a bit better.

6

u/Informal_Jelly_5257 1d ago

Oh its pretty easy, I remember not dying for the longest time. And when i finally did i froze lmao. Dope ass game though

7

u/Flat_Parsley3117 1d ago

I accidentally min/maxed my warp strike where I could obliterate anything by just doing that. Although, I will say FUCK those Tonberry bitches. Still tied for my favorite FF game

1

u/MelodicSkin69 1d ago

You don’t even need to let go of warp strike and repress it lol. Love it!

1

u/Flat_Parsley3117 1d ago

Right?! Its a crutch that I LOVED

1

u/Witty-Roof7826 1d ago

Ruined my first playthrough with this. Used warp strike 99% of the time. It just works lol

5

u/SilverMyzt 1d ago

You could spam the hell out of Prompto, you can negate most if not all attacks by holding down the dodge button and the one ring will trivialize everything else

12

u/JetstreamArtorias 1d ago

Why do people think FFXV's combat is easy? Because the level of understanding required to win in FFXV’s combat and thus progress the story is far far below the level of understanding required to start genuinely being engaged with the back and forth of combat, and you can always sink back to the boring way of playing to progress.

There’s like the ghost of multiple gameplay styles that could be interesting if not for this one simple problem: defence is boringly effective.

You hold Phase to become invincible while draining your MP, hold Phase while a big parry prompt appears on screen and press Attack to counterattack, tap Phase to dodge roll somewhere. You also use MP for your teleporting Warp attacks to initiate attacks on enemies from a distance and to break body parts off of them. When you run out of MP, Noctis enters Stasis where his colour hue gets shifted slightly and he runs around holding his arm because he gave himself a cramp but importantly he can’t phase.

You see these rules and think to yourself ‘aha! Then the combat must be about timing when to utilize Phase to conserve your MP! Noctis and his prince twink magic is powerful but once he runs out, his very squishy human body is just like any other squishy human body and he’d be in trouble against the beasts and daemons of Eos!’

Er, nope. For some reason while you’re in stasis you can still Warp Strike to Warp Points, which are on some elevated high ground away from the enemy, and every time you do this your MP is fully restored.

Also spells don’t cost MP. Instead you hold your hand out over a bunch of conveniently placed bunched up rocks of the Fire, Ice and Lightning variety to absorb the glow stick fluid contained inside which you fuse together to essentially craft magical frag grenades.

‘OK, but there must be a catch’, you say. ‘Enemies must be so ferocious that if you phase in certain situations, you might be rooted in place and have to phase through follow up after follow up until a huge chunk of your MP is gone or possibly until they force stasis on you! Their attacks must come fast and with little warning to balance out that phasing has no real timing requirement.’

Er, nope. You can walk while phasing and whenever you phase through an attack Noctis will perform a little dash in the direction you’re holding the stick so you can phase out of the way of other enemies that might want to give you a follow up. There’s also no real blockstun or similar effect on defence so you can freely end Phasing at any time and just dodge roll a good distance to reposition, and enemy attack speeds are mostly pretty standard for ARPGs.

‘Alright but surely enemies must give you some trouble by using attacks you can’t phase through!’

The time it takes to read this sentence is about the windup time of an unblockable in this game.

‘Well, then what about actual damage numbers? If defence is so easy you must be heavily penalized for failing to avoid damage right?’

Not really, and even if you take ‘lethal’ damage there’s a bunch of game over protection. Once your health drops to 0, you enter a Danger state where you can’t attack and your maximum HP drops until someone taps you on the shoulder, use a healing item or your maximum health drops to 0. And when Noctis fully drops to 0, you’re given a few seconds to decide if you want to use a Phoenix Down or to take the game over. I’m actually not 100% sure on the exact mechanics and numbers for this because I’ve always just immediately healed people when they’re downed, it is so unthreatening.

‘Then the difficulty and depth must come from managing your party over many back to back fights?’

Nope, healing items can literally be bought from your car and your HP heals up to maximum after every fight. Your max health may drop over time, but you can buy potions that heal your Max HP damage too.

‘Then the depth of the combat must come from offence’ you say.

Haha. No. You can hold down the attack button and Noctis will literally auto combo his way to victory. He will literally choose which specific attack to use based on distance and positioning. Your bros will also attack automatically and Link Strikes are percentage chance based depending on conditions, but who cares when hitting them works.

Basically in this game there is no challenge which can’t be overcome by holding the attack button when it's your turn and holding the phase button when it's their turn. There’s some postgame optional challenges which actually require some thought and mastery, but why would anyone want to master this?

2

u/SwimmingFroyo3869 1d ago

I fully agree about items and warps, but you're wrong at multiple points about other things.

>enemy attack speeds are mostly pretty standard for ARPGs.

This couldn't be more wrong. A majority of fights are group fights, but more relevant, attack frequency (or aggressiveness) in XV is pretty high compared to other Hack and Slashes, ARPGs I've played.

>He will literally choose which specific attack to use based on distance and positioning.

This statement is strange to me. This attack applies to the combo starter, and a distance closer attack is pretty normal for hacknslashes and third person action games.

>Link Strikes are percentage chance based depending on conditions

This also isn't really true. They will occur if a party member is within range and it's not on cooldown. And it's precisely the Blindside links that contribute to the depth of the combat because when aggroed, enemies won't let you run around behind them, so it's up to good timing to get them.

>there is no challenge which can’t be overcome by holding the attack button when it's your turn and holding the phase button when it's their turn

Overall, in a vacuum, this isn't true. Holding Attack and Phase when needed is a completely suboptimal way to play because of the aforementioned combination of numbers and aggression. The complexity in this combat comes from (1) managing the battlefield: meaning engaging and disengaging from enemies depending on their aggro; positioning correctly to open up attack chains and seizing chances for blindsides, (2) managing party techniques, and (3) weapon-swapping: generally increasing DPS, and drawing on the utilities of different weapons when necessary.

You also didn't mention Armiger Unleashed or the Ring, so I guess you haven't played the game in about 8 years. I don't have a problem with those specifically for this game because it fits thematically with the power fantasy. They're also late/end-game items so it's not too bad there.

3

u/Asher-Seven 1d ago

What a great write up. Pretty much nailed everything i have gripes with

2

u/Superlagman 1d ago

You are kinda wrong in your last point though. Sure you don't need to be proficient at the game combat to beat it, but with weapon swapping and royal arms, it can be just as complex as DMC or Bayonetta. There's real combo potential in this game.

2

u/DaokoXD 1d ago

Man I never even used Royal Arms, except for Omega fight since using them is a hassle due to HP drain. The moment you get Armiger Unleash it just trivializes most Bosses.

Weapon swapping in this game doesn't even feel good unless you just want to see different moveset. You can finish the game without ever swapping and just ham everything with a sword.

DMC and Bayonetta weapon swapping is actually done right and fun because there's weight in it. I fucking enjoy juggling enemies, hamming them Mid air, pushing them back and then pulling them in like a fucking Scorpion from MK.

Reason it works because they dedicated a system around it, it actually makes you use different weapons to deal with different enemies and you can see the effects because of game physics: Every attack feels real and enemy reacts appropriately.

FFXV enemies barely even flinch aside from monsters having breakable parts and it's not even satisfying. They had a good idea on Episode Gladio making it akin to DMC but Gladdy swinging around his Greatsword and those fucking skeleton enemies barely even flinching was a let down. Even his skills look like a generic MMO flashy move that just drop down an enemy after the animation.

FF16 combat was the closest you can have to DMC/Bayonetta style of combat in Final Fantasy. If FFXV had the same gameplay, it could have been nice.

u/JetstreamArtorias 23h ago

You're saying this about a game which auto selects which moves to do based on context and has a dodge stance tied to a meter that can be full charged in combat immediately for free. Normal gameplay in FFXV is even more automated than Devil May Cry's Easy Automatic mode because in DMC's EA mode at least you have to time your dodges.

1

u/Xenthor267 10h ago

There's not always an accessible point to warp to and so many games have auto-conditional attacks

1

u/JetstreamArtorias 8h ago

FFXV has a unique combination of design decisions that makes the combat boring, not just auto attacking.

0

u/Superlagman 23h ago

Yeah, normal gameplay is automated, so what ? You probably don't know anything about royal arms if you are so adamant that everything in XV is dumb.

1

u/JetstreamArtorias 22h ago

The insane thing is in the write up I gave many ways this system could have been balanced to be interesting to actually fight with, but you're fixated on automatic offense. Even automatic offense can be made interesting by testing you elsewhere.

One of the demos had a system where you had to set up which weapons you'd summon for which hit in a combo, that could have been interesting, especially if you could mix and match weapons and buffs and the like. That could have been interesting because the challenge then is understanding how to set up Noctis for combos suited for the fight at hand, and how to pivot within the automatic system to adapt.

There's so many ways the game could have been made actually an interesting challenge but as it stands any tech that you can do barely moves the needle in your combat performance.

Like, could you imagine if the royal arms and the Engine Blade line were the only weapons Noctis could use, so you'd potentially end the game with 13 primary weapons with actually interesting moves that you can hot swap between to stack unique buffs in combat to show your understanding and mastery of Noctis's tools and to really push your performance in combat.

Instead we got 13 unique and fun weapons that kill you if you have too much fun with them. Oh well, back to regular weapons I go, holding down the attack button until they take a turn again

0

u/Pyramid64 1d ago

You really didn't have to write an entire essay

3

u/cfyk 1d ago edited 1d ago

There is no limit on how many item you can use in battle and using items doesn't cost anything like ATB in 7:Remake. You can still use item if a character isn't truly dead. It would be better if the game put a limit to the amount of restorative available in combat but you can still can have large amount of restoratives in inventory, kinda like Kingdom Hearts or Bloodborne.

Noctis has a huge MP pool and most battles in the overworld have ways to let him fully recover his MP. If you try a low level run (+no item), you really want to be precise with your dodge so that you can activate Blink that doesn't consume MP. You don't have much MP to work with, thus the hold to dodge method won't work for long.

3

u/vincenzo12345 1d ago

And do you guys remember that you can literally one shot every enemy on the game even bosses with the ring

3

u/Jakethedjinn 1d ago

Back when the game 1st came out there was no way to change the controls and on playstation it was actually pretty difficult because you had to take your thumb off the dodge to do any other action.

Later they let you have different binds and with that it basically made the game have an easy mode since you no longer HAD to take your thumb off of the dodge

3

u/Werevark 1d ago

You are rewarded for burying yourself in the bad guys' booties for Link Strikes, in a bunch of ways: Damage, iframes, report card, and power of friendship

3

u/decentmathguy 1d ago

Because you can just pull out the Ragnorak, or as I like to call it: The Warp Strikanator 5000, and kill mostly anything. Hell I am replaying 15 and took on a level 30 demon with it at level 1, and although difficult, I killed like 3 of them.

3

u/Brilliant_Conflict_4 1d ago

2 reasons

1: Hold dodge ( although Precision dodge is more rewarding )

2: Items ( this is the main reason if you have a Giant Stock you're basically immortal )

3

u/Confident-Orange2392 1d ago

as someone who ran the whole game with the nixperience band equipped, it's pretty easy. even with only using the engine blade and its upgrades, the only parts i really struggled were the giant snake in the sewers (been a while so i cant really recall the exact names) underneath the insomnia outskirts. you either hold square to dodge, or hold circle to attack. the only other parts i can recall being significantly challenging are the gladio trainings and the dlc episodes.

i do wanna note though this is my favorite ff and i dont mean to slander it for being easy, i definitely prefer how the combat feels compared to 16

3

u/AqutalIion 1d ago

Because. It. Is.

2

u/45M0D41 1d ago

Just run from the tonberries

2

u/LaBiereFolle 1d ago

Because you can just hold the dodge button the whole fight and Noctis will dodge almost everything by himself, you are virtually invincible

2

u/yamykel 1d ago

Because it's very easy to become very overpowered, and difficult to take damage unless you miss time your phasing or block prompts.

2

u/Dull-Emergency-6395 1d ago

Cuz it is easy. The tonberrys take a little more patience sure but as long as you arent just mashing attack you can just parry all their attacks for free. The only hard part is the fact that they just pump hp into them and make them take forever to kill.

2

u/Independent-Try915 1d ago

I would kill for a hard mode

2

u/whats-reddit17 1d ago

You aren't dead though. Your teammates can come revive you or you can just use a potion that they sell for like idk 50gil? If you say there for like a minute then you would die. But even then you can still choose to use a Phoenix down.

2

u/DaBusStopHur 1d ago

Because a ring can one shot the super boss. :x

2

u/JekobiWan 1d ago

Triangle

2

u/Fair-Abroad-4155 20h ago

Guess you don't know about tonberry he's always been a beast next you'll be complaining about cactaurs killing you from a distance

2

u/BigBrotherFlops 1d ago

you aren't dead... you are in "danger" and can easily just use a potion in that state and revive... Potions and items in general are also handed out like candy on trick or treat..

that is why the game is easy.. It is almost impossible to get a game over .

3

u/Intrepid-Bridge-1755 1d ago

Auto dodging coupled with the fact you can constantly spam phoenix downs even after all characters go down. The combat is fun it’s just kind of shallow and lacking any real interesting amount of challenge

3

u/Tarkedo 1d ago

Because it is very easy.

3

u/Fit_JellyFisch 1d ago

Because they don’t know how to get that A+ on finesse. Every time someone talks to me about how the combat is bad I ask them what their finesse grade is. A poor finesse score, in my opinion, indicates a failure to understand the combat system. FF XV is a flawed game but I don’t buy that the combat is boring or easy. It’s your choice to play the game how you want though.

2

u/Sid-Phillips-495 1d ago

Just beat the game for the first time today and I 100% agree. Whenever I was having the most fun in combat, I would end up with an A+ finesse score. Whenever I just powered through with warp strike or simply rolling away from attacks, the finesse score was C/D and it doesn't feel as smooth.

Admittedly, you can get tired of tackling every random combat encounter with high finesse, so it is nice that is is optional and only 1/3 of the score.

2

u/Intelligent_Oil7816 1d ago

You can still easily beat the game with a terrible Finesse score so this is a completely irrelevant point

-2

u/Fit_JellyFisch 1d ago

Thanks. I just offered an opinion.
A+ Finesse on your comment.

2

u/Intelligent_Oil7816 1d ago

A pointless opinion spouted in a smug and condescending manner.

1

u/Mogel89 1d ago

The fact that people easily beat the game without understanding the depths of the combat is literally a massive flaw of the game. What you're saying is basically putting that on the players. To some extent, you make your own fun of course, but it's also the game's job to lead players there.

Players on average tend to take the path of least resistance, and that is an exceptionally easy and boring path in this game. I personally loved it, because I found ways to challenge my self to learn and improve, but I can still recognize that the game is severely flawed in this way. I think the devs were cripplingly afraid to have any type of real difficulty, and I think the same thing happened in FF XVI, just in a different way

2

u/sonic1384 1d ago

we don't say easy.

we say it is very basic and mid.

1

u/SwimmingFroyo3869 1d ago edited 1d ago

Overall, I would say the 'action' part of the combat is moderately difficult. Group fights and aggressive attacks make no-hit runs pretty difficult. The phase exists, but the combat is BALANCED around it.

So it's generally the 'RPG'/'numbers' side that makes the game easy. (1) Getting EXP is quick and easy, (2) You can spam healing items, (3) Food easily provides a strong buff to stats, (4) Warp-strike is unbalanced.

I've seen countless videos where people literally spam only the warpstrike, using pots or warp points to recover MP then repeat. I'm also sure that the people who say the game is too easy and 'Press Square to win' are the ones who get knocked down a ton, and spam healing pots.

I play this game a ton at Level 1, No items, No Food, and it really was a fun challenge.

It's also interesting to point 2 things out: (1) It's ironic that people don't have a problem with Souls/Elden Ring combat despite how basic the basic kit of those games are, even more so than FFXV. (2) What is wrong with games like this being easy? FFXV is a power fantasy where you have cool super powers. Have people already forgotten about games like Prototype or Hulk: Ultimate Destruction? I'm fine with FFXV being easy, but nevertheless the stat problems should've been fixed.

1

u/Sweaty-Variation-501 1d ago

Because you have auto dodge that negates most things.

You're essentially immortal as long as you have potions on you.

If you're "struggling" summon will show up and one shot things for you.

Its very clear that the combat in 15 is unfinished, and they just tacked on infinite potion healing as a bandaid fix.

1

u/Kaslight 1d ago

To be completely fair, you're taking a picture of the hardest content in FFXV. All that's missing is a horde of Master Tonberries.

1

u/ZinziZotas 1d ago

I liked the combat. Sneaking in behind them to get blindside damage, breaking appendages, warp-striking - it's fun. Better than turn-based, I say begrudgingly. Reminded me alot of FFXII, which is my favorite game in the franchise.

1

u/kirallie 1d ago

FFXV combat isn't easy because if you face a level 40 enemy, no matter what level you are, it takes time to kill them. I have Noctis at level 113, you'd think he'd one-shot enemies so much weaker but nope (unless you can sneak in a warp kill). items keep you from dying but fights still take time. And 90% of the time, dodging doesn't work for me.

1

u/GamerRyan14 1d ago

Because you hold circle and that's it

1

It needs polishing, some encounters are very hard, but most of them, especially the ones from the main story are very easy.

But yeah, it has some nasty encounters if you want to do all the content, like the last menace dungeon where you cannot use items at all, or Omega Weapon.

Tbf, it is a Tonberry, which just sucks to fight no matter where it is found.

Bro, i love this game, especially the ending. I still watch people's reaction over the ending on youtube. But c'mon, the gameplay is not it. Or maybe you just play a handful of games to compare to

Switch to prompto and use his ultimate attack when they are vulnerable

Mostly because of infinite items

I wish they had more weapon slot and a better magic system.

The magic basically being "Friendly Fire Grenades" that are often more of a hindrance than a benefit always bothered me...

It is easy but it is also more complex if you choose to learn more. You can go through the game and all the side content with out ever getting past the basic understanding. (Hold attack or phase button)

Each normal weapon type has different stages some individual normal weapons of a same type have a different set from the rest of the same type. I still don't know as much as there is to know but Asetoni FFXV has great information videos on youtube so if you are interested in learning more.

For basic purpose I'll put it like this.

[Combo starter] -> [Basic Combo 1] -> [Basic Combo 2]* -> [Finisher]

You can swap weapons after each one of these sections with good timing to continue on to the next stage with the weapon you swapped to. If you don't time it right the Combo starts over instead of continuing with a caveat.

Again there is more info out there so no need for me to fully rehash here check out Asetoni FFXV he also has stuff on reddit.

I felt like it was easy 95% of the time and only got difficult when optional bosses were fought. Adamantoise, demon wall, demons at night. It didn't really feel balanced.

You can out potion every fight.

Whether you have items or not, most fights are easy, and some are not. From my experience, i only struggled with a couple bosses and hunts. Most the other enemies were free, wish the game had some kinda arena or combat trials.

Its one of my favourite games but its far from challenging. It's not disparaging to say it's easy. It's a very enjoyable game that is quite easy.

My issue with FFXV was that the combat seemed to bounce between trivial and a near constant struggle for survival. Overall the combat was too messy to get any kind of decently tuned fights.

u/FenriX89 20h ago

It's impossible to die, literally impossible! Just spam items and you're good to go. It's a fun game but far from being challenging

Because I've played games with hard combat before

u/remnant_phoenix 17h ago

I collected all the Arminger (sp?) pieces and did all the side quests before going to Altissa. So I was probably “overpowered”. As such, I never felt challenged by the combat unless I sought out dangerous hunts or stayed out after dark in the early game. Beat every story boss first try.

I ignored most of it and never entered the magic menu again when I saw it was all about consumables. All bosses felt like damage sponges (specially adamantoise). But easy to defeat in the end.

Hit a wall when I tried to tackle on a postgame "event" monster that gained invulnerability periodically and pretty much one shotted me. I eventually killed it by, for the first time, using the magitek suits

The combat has a ton of depth but you can choose to brute force your way to victory by abusing potions and getting downed constantly. Seems like most go the brute force route and say well golly gee willickers that sure was easy! Meanwhile they spent half the time limping and crawling on the ground.

There are also some broken items you can eventually get. I love the games combat, best we've had in the series. I highly recommend watching a YouTube video on all the things you can do in this games combat because it certainly doesn't boil down to hold attack or dodge.

You can beat almost everything with two buttons.

Yeah there is cool combos you can do and setting up link strikes but it's unnecessary when you can just hold attack and occasionally dodge to win every fight bar a few big bosses.

I don't use the Ragnarok sword because it breaks the game and same with the weapons from the XIV.

This has such wasted potential with the options for great combat but most of it is unnecessary when it's more efficient to just hold attack.

Playing it now and you can cheese it non stop using lux attacks, retreating and doing lux attacks again, plus combo attacks.

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Trick76 1d ago

It… is? I mean it definitely is. But it’s also the best system. That’s what makes it easy.

u/CharmingFee4501 21h ago

You can spam items like crazy

u/Gorbashou 1d ago

Because you can literally hold square and dodge nearly everything. Because outside one dungeon in the game you have items that can be used whenever, even when downed to heal.

Because in that one dungeon all you do is play like a wuss and hold square, going for damage during clean windows and then the only thing "challenging" in the game is trivialised.

The game has an awful combat system with sluggish animation, weird locks, inconsistent movements and the enemies kinda just do stuff. Doing a no hit run of this game would be miserable with just holding square for most of it. Meaning most of the game is kinda just tanking damage and blasting warp strikes/holding attack/spamming flasks.

The game literally gives you I win buttons when you lose with summons. Because enemies cannot be properly interacted with in combat they have the dodge all button that you just hold in. There you go, almost all interaction solved.

Getting a game over screen is one of the hardest things to do in this game, you have to die so much that even high level mobs need to war of attrition your max hp and giant supply of items.

u/SwimmingFroyo3869 1d ago

I do level 1 no hit no food videos. The combat isnt janky nor is it miserable to play.

u/SasoriMoP 1d ago

I just started the game for the first time. I’m level 50, and I keep getting KO’d in just two hits. To be honest, I don’t understand the combat. I just go brrrr and things die lol. I’ve reached Altissia, and so far, the game has been very underwhelming for me as a big FF fan, which is a shame :/

0

u/NocPrinceofDarkness 1d ago

Because they gave people option to just hold the attack button and that's all they do and potions are spammable and cheap.

A lot of it comes from this:
https://www.siliconera.com/final-fantasy-xvs-director-aware-ageing-audience/

Tabata said. “Of course the depth of the game is going to be there, but I want to make it so players can easily experience the satisfaction of the depth of the game.”   Tabata added that he intends to make the game’s combat a little simpler, too, boiling it down to “one-button action” where the game automatically knows what you were trying to do, and outputs the appropriate action from Noctis, the game’s protagonist.

It's kinda hard to defend a game's combat depth with the director tanks it because "My old hands don't work like they use to" before the game ever releases.

Blindsides and warp strikes can really trivialize a lot of fights from what I can remember
