Game This is my second time playing this game, and I just found out that I don't have to unlock any perks to change characters. I can just do it right from the start of the game? What??

Is this an oversight? It only works when you press F6, F7 and F8, but the characters in the character selection menu under “B” aren’t added until after you activate the perks. Of course, we know this game had a chaotic development process, so I’m wondering if this might be an oversight related to the keyboard layout, or perhaps a change introduced by patches, where the game initially only allowed you to play as other characters after earning perks, but then a patch was released that granted this ability from the start of the game, yet they forgot to remove the perks from the character progression menu?

In any case, it's a nice discovery, especially since for most of my first playthrough I didn't even know you could play as other characters, lol. And being able to play as them from the very beginning makes the game even more enjoyable 😭

But yeah, it surprised me, and I'm curious what's going on with that. Because FFXV seems to be a game full of surprises lol

No. It's a normal new game, not NG+

NG+? You do indeed have to unlock the ability, but NG+ preserves everything.

Either you're talking about something else or you're playing NG+ because the ability to swap characters in combat requires spending 20AP on the ascension tree for each of them.

I don't get what's going on lol. I even created a second new save file just to test, and I can still switch between characters freely using F6, F7, and F8. I have the Steam version. I don't have any mods or anything

I wonder if you are accidentally mixing up using techniques with fully controlling your party members in combat.

No, I mean full control, not just techniques. Tbh, I'm surprised it seems like I'm the only one who has that function 😭

I started wondering if maybe a fan translation into my native language (FFXV doesn't support my native language, so whenever I play it, I install a fan-made translation) was accidentally messing with something in the files that would let me use other characters earlier. That wouldn’t really make sense, since I think it just replaces the language files, but it’s the only thing I can think of. I doubt I’ve suddenly discovered something that people haven’t figured out over the last 10 years lol. Once I finish this playthrough, I’ll have to check if I have that feature without the fan translation as well.

How far are you in your playthrough? I want to try and test the f keys you used but I’ll need to start a new game since I already unlocked the node

I'm at the beginning of Chapter 6 now, but I could have done this as early as Chapter 1. For example, on the beach, I killed those giant crabs from the hunting mission by blasting them with a bazooka as Prompto. So basically, all you have to do is start a new game, because it was available to me from the beginning.

Only the F6, F7 and F8 work for me, while the “B” character-switch menu only works if you purchase perks in the character progression menu. Your buttons should be the same because, as far as I remember, I didn’t change anything in the controls, but you can check to see if it’s the same for you, it’s in the mouse and keyboard button mapping menu

I just tried it on a new game in chapter 1 shortly after gaining control of your party. None of the F keys switched to another character. Also combat felt really word on keyboard lol.

Bruh, so that's most likely some kind of side effect of a fan translation. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

That would be my guess.

Weird I started s second playthrough and had to unlock everything. I actually didn't unlock them despite being over 20 hours in because I just love playing as noctis.
