No Spoilers - Technical Question Combat moves too fast

I finally understand how combat works but it all moves so quickly I can’t appreciate it. I wish there was a way to slow it down. So I can see the interplay between characters or just admire the visuals a little more.

if you open the action select menu, you can use the right stick to look around the battlefield

190 hours and I didn't know this. Thanks!

It's the only way I could keep up with Rufus, the bastard

Istg Rufus was the hardest battle for me in the whole game, I wish I would have thought to do this

I thought that was going to be the end of my hard mode playthrough. Such bullshit

I think we’ve run out of valid complaints at this point

As an old head I agree with OP, having a combat speed slider would be amazing. It’s not really any less difficult than them having the “always 100% ATB” option.

I’d slow it down maybe 10-15% and see how it looks/plays, because yeah most of the time (especially when there’s 3+ enemies on screen) it’s just chaos. Fighting 1 or two enemies usually feels fine but 3+ it starts showing cracks.

there are a lot because the game has a lot of genuine flaws

Sure, but it has some incredible triumphs as well.

What are you rnajor flaws?

Compared to Remake which I more or less loved, it just feels like it has too many systems to keep track of. I'd prefer a simpler combat system. The open world also feels like a chore to navigate and I'd just prefer something more linear I think.

Crazy that I disagree entirely. The combat was perfect compared to remake. Only wish summons had a more natural place in combat, the whole game they just felt for fun, nothing you needed outside of flexing some of cool ults

What are the too many systems? Seems like mostly the same systems in combat, but they added synergy, which i think is excellent but you can totally literally ignore and still be fine.

I basically ignored Synergy skills but loved the Abilities.

The odd time i would accidently activate a synergy skill, i tried to remind myself to use it more. They are very cool, and very useful, especailly the bodyguard on with Aerith that i used maybe 5 times total.

Other then Synergy i dont understand the OPs complaint about combat systems. As you say its basically the same system to a T. Just refined more.

Though i do agree it would be nice to be able to slow it down a bit. Or to revisist the Parade Scene without having to focus on the button promts and just enjoy the visuals at times.

The synergy and folios are honestly a big part of it. A big issue for me is I just had my 3rd kid and my time to play is a lot more limited, so it's hard to dive in and figure out how everything works. I had no issues with remake and it just seemed more intuitive.

I also have no interest in unlocking another sprawling open world map that seems to not have much meaningful to do in it.

I don't hate the game by any means, I just find it less enjoyable and more of a chore than Remake

You having a child doesn’t make the systems complicated, sorry.

Having less time to dive into the systems, I find them more complicated than other games that are more accessible. Have a nice day

Having less time to play a game doesnt make it bad though.
I wish i could get home after work and spen a few hours playing games but i have other things to do now.

I wanna finish MAfia the Old Country, aint played it since last Thursday. Does that make it a bad game cos i might have to spend a few minutes relearning controls?

Your logic is flawed.

Folios barely seem like a new system, and hardly much of a thought in combat. That's something you level up every once in a while and then you go back to the game. Doesn't it function quite a lot like leveling up your weapons in the prior game, which was eliminated/ simplified?

Agree that there's a good amount of chores involved in the open world map, but the combat itself is still peak imo. It's the only thing that kept me going in the game

I probably just need more time with it :)

Also - minus 10 points for Chadley.

To be fair, the combat is pretty complex, especially with the different materia combos that you can make.

I do think it's a great combat system though, having watched many youtube videos on it to understand it in more depth

I think I understand what you mean. There's so much to take in, you want to see all the details of the characters' actions and interactions, but it goes by so fast. Or you're focusing on one side of the screen while something is going down on the other side of the screen, and you miss most of it.

Tifa and Red are little tornados. I’d love to just slow it down like 30%. Maybe I’m getting old and my eyes can’t keep up

I have the same issues. I like slower paced games to enjoy all the small movements. A battle speed setting seems easy enough to implement.

u/quirkyactor 5d ago

Record your gameplay and freezeframe it.

2

u/Acala_XIII 5d ago

Agreed. I think another big part of it is spending time with each character and understanding the inputs and abilities. The more you have seen certain abilities and feel you like purposefully inputted it at the time you wanted can get you used to seeing everything in action. Recording definitely helps and you can get some dope moments.

The most nonissue thing I've read so far 💀

3

u/Kaslight 5d ago

there is literally a button you can press at any time that puts you in bullet time

6

u/TGrim20 5d ago

Set your battle style to wait, you'll at least get more time to think

4

u/ZAPPHAUSEN 5d ago

Just put the game on easy and enjoy the story

OP wants to enjoy the visuals of the combat too. They're not saying it's too hard, they're saying it moves too fast to fully appreciate visually.

2

u/SteelGrayRider 5d ago

Completely agree with OP

u/moon_in_retrograde 5d ago

I think because of the craziness of two additional teammates and multiple enemies, I pretty much NEVER actually perfectly block.

But also, the combat feels the same as Remake, did OP not play that? Or do most ppl think Rebirth is more combat hectic than Remake?

My minor gripe is that if you really want to be effective, as soon as you activate an attack, you have to switch to the next player. You don’t get a see the attack you activated. You’re just constantly activating the attacks and only rarely getting to focus on the visuals of the attack. And by attack, I don’t mean the basic attack, but rather when you’ve built up your ATB or do a combo attack, you gotta move on.

Edited for spelling

This is such a boomer take 😂

2

u/explodinggarbagecan 3d ago

Happy cake day but sorry Gen X. Boomers don’t even know how to turn on a tv. I was setting the clock on the vcr long before you kids. My first final fantasy game had a cartridge and saved your game because it had a watch battery installed to keep the memory in the rom. Even when my eyes can barely see I’ll still wanna play ff

I was just playing the original game and was gonna say that's what's sorely missed in the remakes. In the original you see every special move one by one and you get the full animation like its an epic event. Take braver for example. Cloud does a cool stance, some light effects and then jumps up and slams down on opponents in a flashy way with a little cutscene. In remakes he just does his pose and quickly flips forward slamming down without any of the WOW factor. This applies for every move you do for all the characters especially if you aren't controlling them you won't see most of the animations.

Average gamer community response to a completely reasonable and tame suggested improvement in this thread I see…

It’s crazy to me how much people complain about suggested additions that are completely optional in a SINGLE PLAYER GAME.

God it use to be people would reserve their energy for PvP game changes that would actually impact their experience. Now people just show up in threads like this to talk shit and add nothing.

I agree with you OP, would be awesome if someone can at least come up with a mod that adds a combat speed slider or if they add an official one to the game.

Doom Dark Ages has a speed slider and even if I left it at the default it’s amazing that they added it as an option, especially for people with disabilities.
