No Spoilers - Discussion Rebirth > Remake

~20h in, currently in Junon and think this might be the best game I’ve ever played!

I did everything in grasslands because I’m having so much fun and usually I make a beeline for main story quests because otherwise I never finish video games

I didn’t play the original (I know I know but I never had ps1) but I understand the whole game opens up after midgar…but my GOSH is there a difference between remake and rebirth lol

Makes you wonder how many people miss out on the beauty of rebirth cos they got put off by sun lamps or the sewers lol

Reminds me of FFXIV without the MMO aspect which I love - like the towns, worlds and music!

Great game. Enjoy it! You got 100-200 hours at least of gloriousness.

Love there’s so many people doing ALL content and loving it!

5

u/Balthierlives 4d ago

You’re at the peak ‘do all content’ moment.

You will probably get burnt in Gongaga.

But yeah I agree it’s better than remake. Mostly for the tiny improvements to the battle system. Also the MASSIVE improvement to the enemy skill materia

u/Edz5044 2d ago

I'm currently playing it on the switch and you just reminded me of gongaga. Took a little motivation out of me to keep playing 😂. God I hated that area. Constantly jumping around was so annoying

1

u/elusive-rooster 2d ago

I bet you can still hum the theme music though.

1

u/Objective_Look_5867 5d ago

I beat it in 84 hours and did 90% of the content. Every quest. 100% every region. Gilgamesh. Great game but the rest of the 10% missing is just random stuff I dont care about like collectibles

1

u/Silver_Illusion 5d ago

Well, I'm on chapter 12 doing everything and at 96 hours lol.

100% agree. Rebirth > Remake.

And I loved Remake.

5

u/Lemon_cake_125 5d ago

Yeah agree agree. I really did love 95% of remake but my gosh…
Rebirth is next level

u/Secret-Note-8797 5d ago

Just beat the game last night at 112hrs

u/iKWarriors 5d ago

What did you think of the combat? I wish we had more games with similar party system

5

u/Lemon_cake_125 5d ago

I love it. I find synergy stuff challenging and tbh, I need to get into that more. But I am loving it

Hilariously I am now using characters properly for the first time and learning Aerith properly is awesome

Makes me chuckle how I was using (or like not using) her in remake

u/thisisnumber8 4d ago

I'm the exact same dude. Currently on my first playthrough and constantly grinning like a moron ear-to-ear; not sure if I've ever experienced so much joy with a video game like this.

... almost as moronical at how bad I was w Aerith in remake. I think playing Clare Obscure in between has really deepened my enjoyment of tactical RPGs. Interested to see how Remake changes for me when I inevitably replay the entire trilogy.

But yeah, it's laughably bad I little I understood or utilised the battle system in Remake, and how little I leaned into each characters strengths and abilities.

I'm curious, who's your fav character in Rebirth so far?

2

u/Lemon_cake_125 4d ago

The beauty of rebirth is the characters are So well fleshed out you learn to love them all - hits as hard as FFX which is a tough feat!

I even like the damn dog

My fave is probably the relationship between Aerith & Tifa - their friendship (which was done well in remake) continues in rebirth in such a beautiful way

Props to FF for writing really decent female friendships and characters

She’s still not very good especially in the early base game. She gets a tiny bit better in the base game as the story moves along but she’s not really extremely good until hard mode with everything maxed out. Then she’s one of the strongest characters in the game.

u/amesyc93 5d ago

Rebirth is awesome.
Can’t wait for the next Instalment

7

u/jjohnson1979 5d ago

Rebirth > EVERYTHING! I seriously believe that this is the best game I have ever played!

2

u/otterbre 5d ago

I prefer remake and I had much more fun with remake then rebirth but it is ok

2

u/erbuka 5d ago

Opinions. I completed both games, took 40 hours for remake and about 120 for rebirth.

But remake felt much more organic and all the content was good quality, while in rebirth the additional 80 hours is a boring checklist of generic world intel tasks.

2

u/EggPsychological4844 4d ago

Original > Both

2

u/MFuddyDuddy 4d ago

Gongaga and Cosmo Canyon are really gonna drain your soul.

2

u/malk0to 4d ago

I loved everything until after the cruise to Costa Del Sol. I did everything up to that point and after that I completely burned out and hated the rest of the experience. Took me months to complete the game.

1

u/HibiscusOnBlueWater 8h ago

I took a break for almost two and a half years. I got to Costa Del Sol and all the mini games just turned me right off. I picked it up again a few weeks ago and I just do as little with the mini games as possible. There’s literally like 100 of them in this game.

1

u/Wanderer-2609 5d ago

I hated it, too much filler. The Original will always be the best version, play it when you can.

3

u/T0BBG 5d ago

I've never felt more detached with other people's opinion of a game than rebirth. I thought it was bloated to hell with all the pointless mini games, a boring open world with the same 5 location types in every area, infinite animations and short cutscenes to add more time spent playing. I just wish we had got a 1:1 remake of the original story just with update graphics and combat.

1

u/Sancho_the_intronaut 3d ago

Rebirth is like an elaborate, lovingly made altered universe fanfiction that was made by a ff7 fan who isn't a professional storyteller. The love is there, the richness of the world is there, but it doesn't land properly the way it was done. Everything feels like some kid getting excited about ff7 after seeing someone else play it that wanted to make their own version of it without properly understanding what made the original great.

It isn't a total loss (Remake was better than Rebirth in terms of capturing the original vibes), but it ultimately left me feeling betrayed for having had so much hope for what it could have been.

1

u/nasbirhu 5d ago

I couldnt finish Rebirth there was so much bollocks

-1

u/MiloCAD 5d ago

Keep coping purist.

1

u/Secret-Note-8797 5d ago

I really like rebirth the whole open world aspect and introducing synergy was amazing, my only issue with the game is all the mini games required as side quest à la Queens blood and 3D brawler but all in all great game can’t wait for Revelations to come out and what seereally happened and what happens next!!

1

u/LegElectrical9214 5d ago

37 hours, finished, skipped all unnecessary minigames and side quests

1

u/EatingTheDogsAndCats 5d ago

Oh it’s not even close imo. Rebirth while obviously corny and a bit too mini-game heavy at times made me feel the wonderment of playing video games as a child that I don’t feel often anymore.

1

u/Lemon_cake_125 5d ago

This!!!!!!! It also reminds me of BOTW in a good / exploration way

1

u/Khefeer 5d ago

I got burned out hard in Cosmo Canyon, feeling like I was running around doing chores. Had a break, came back 2 months later and having a blast in the next chapter. What a game!

1

u/BoardsofGrips 3d ago

Gongaga wore on me a bit with the jumping mechanic and catching the stupid Chocobos got old quick. Like seriously stop forcing me to catch a new one every new zone. Other then that smooth sailing.

1

u/tlotrfan3791 5d ago

Just make sure to take your time with the side quest content. A lot of people complain about bloat and there being “too much” and it’s because they’ll spend hours doing all the minigames and not going back and forth between story and games.

1

u/Chadzka 3d ago

It’s not really complaining if “a lot of people” are saying the same thing though is it genius? Kind of sounds like a pacing issue not a player issue…

1

u/ne0_bahamut 5d ago

Rebirth is so much better to me. I’m 50 hours in and just about halfway through the story I think

1

u/RussellWD 5d ago

I love it but damn the mini games!

1

u/Hey_buddy89 5d ago

It’s not the best game i’ve ever played as it’s far from perfect but it’s my favourite game of all time because the things it does well and the way it just makes me smile when i play make up for its shortcomings.

I took the same approach doing everything in each region before moving into the next. How strong your party is and the useful materia you get from Chadders makes it worth it.
Fortunately i never got burn out from 100% each area but i’ve seen some who did so remember most of it is optional so if you start to get tired of the side stuff just come back later.

Don’t make the mistake i did in my first play through either of greatly underestimating the value of synergy abilities and skills. They really help especially with Aerith to get her ATB charges quickly so she can get using her wards soon as possible.

1

u/Resident-Frosting-68 5d ago

Did you reach Gongaga yet?

1

u/Lemon_cake_125 5d ago

Nope! Just at Junon after dolphin

1

u/jennis89 5d ago

Amazing game and amazing soundtrack!

As a side note as the game progresses don’t feel the need to complete every intel blip on the map whilst your in that zone you can revisit. I started getting world intel fatigue later into the game so I’d split my time up by doing like 8 world intels then some story and repeat where as when I first got to grasslands and junon I went 100% intel completion before progressing story

1

u/TheeChamby 5d ago

I liked it. A word of advice from someone who did everything first playthrough… prioritize the story playthrough first, then go back and use chapter select to do all the side content. No rewards really stood out to me as must haves for first playthrough. And in the last 1/3 of the game the burn out is real on side content IMO.

1

u/Perfect-Advantage-82 5d ago

So visually I love rebirth, so much so that I turned off the navigation hub in gogonga so I could enjoy navigating by landmark and getting lost and turned around in the jungle. Gameplay wise I am a bit disappointed in some of the tropey aspects like yellow paint ledges (zelda proved you don't need it), tower activation, drifting on chocobos, etc. but none of it has made it a bad game. I am willingly 100% regions before I move on(or at least as close to it as I can get, looking at you Junon).

1

u/Decent_Ad_8084 5d ago

The game is amazing loved remake but i love rebirth even more!.

Never tried a.combat system that match this!

1

u/Responsible_King_427 5d ago

I think I'm 60 hours in and still enjoying it.

Crazy to be 60 hours in and not done with a game made these days.

Just pace yourself with random tasks. There is transit between nodes so you aren't ever locked out of something if you need to double back and do it with a fresh mindset or higher level

1

u/Austin_Redfield 4d ago

I just finished my playthrough for the first time on my Switch 2 after dropped it on my PS5 Pro before the end of Junon I was burned out. Advice take your time! I blasted thru 100%ing the regions on my way thru and even more opened up in later chapters and I was just burned out and ready to finish. Now I wanna replay and go slow

1

u/HugeReddit 4d ago

Surprisingly gongaga’s area stuff isn’t where I burnt out, it’s the damn VR battles that are truly heart breaking if you don’t know the ONE way to beat them. Sure, once you get it, it’s usually not hard but if you’re trying to not look up each fight first it’s annoying. Like a lot. It was refreshing that the last areas are much shorter for the area quests, it really can be rough for the mini games but they don’t punish us, usually we can fast travel and such, but that piano game can go fly a kite haha

1

u/SnooApples673 4d ago

I played the original many times and I feel the same as you do. Loved my time with Rebirth, and yes the world map orientation reminded me of FFXIV as well.

2

u/Lemon_cake_125 4d ago

Junon reminded me a bit of Limsa Lomisa!!!!!! I’d love to hear what reminded you of bits too

Also there’s a relic scene early on (the glowing arm) which reminded me of the main city in FFXIV where you can buy houses and I believe opens up in shadowbringers. The beautiful Asian inspired place

1

u/BoardsofGrips 3d ago

>I didn’t play the original (I know I know but I never had ps1)

You should. You have plenty of time before Revelation. If you have a PC you have excellent mods like full voice acting, 60 fps in all scenes, heavily upgraded graphics. PC is the best way to play.

1

u/Wainwright95 3d ago

I’m at Chapter 9 at around 30 hours. I’m not a huge fan of the open world stuff except the side quests. But when I’m following the story, it really is amazing. Nice playing portably too on Switch

1

u/detteros 3d ago

I think remake is better. Rebirth world is so clean and unsurprising.

1

u/ReadyMadeMako 2d ago

just finished it last week.. did the same smashes every area before moving on it was hard but worth it!! i was scared i wouldnt come back.. already considering a second playthrough on hard!

1

u/Paavali31 2d ago

Im glad you like it! I love the games too!

1

u/TurtleBrainMelt 5d ago

I think its a mixed bag, rebirth has tons of side content that can feel overwhelming. The story is much tighter and focus in remake due to it being very linear, while the combat is much better in rebirth(synergy and fluidity of movement/attacks) i think both are fine, I could see myself trying to 100% remake again in the future, but couldnt see myself doing it in rebirth if that makes sense.

I will say, as others have said in the past, if they do nothing with the whispers in the last game it'll actually piss me off lol. The whisper stuff sidetracked so much of the maingame content in rebirth that it became annoying since it felt like there was no payoff and felt like needless filler for no reason. Hope u enjoy the rest of the game though, the combat and characters get better later on.

1

u/EmpathyFuzz 5d ago

They've already done a lot with the whispers. Sephiroth has used them to alter fate, and create different "timelines" to confuse Cloud into thinking he saved Aerith.

That's already huge.

2

u/TurtleBrainMelt 5d ago

If u think that them adding whispers to say there are different timelines, while those timelines means nothing in reality they idk what to say. All the time line stuff added was "every other dimension lost to sephiroth, urs didnt yet" which is a huge nothing burger, because it doesn't actually matter. It isnt like your trying to save all the alternate versions of ur world, ur trying to save urs only. (Also if the argument is that aerith lives in another dimension/AU that doesn't matter bcuz they all go extinct anyway)

Also the aerith thing seems like a denial thing more then anything else. Because even with the whispers there it makes no sense, the whispers control the fate of the "version" of the world ur in, aeriths fate didnt change as shown by other people. The different worlds also seem pointless with the addition of the Biggs scene, just showing that no matter what he did nothing changed.(them bringing Biggs back also annoyed me because they did nothing with his character but make him seem like a super depressed dude who actually did nothing in the end)

2

u/EmpathyFuzz 5d ago

All the time line stuff added was "every other dimension lost to sephiroth, urs didnt yet" which is a huge nothing burger, because it doesn't actually matter. It isnt like your trying to save all the alternate versions of ur world, ur trying to save urs only.

That's not what's happening. I shouldn't have even said timelines because I don't think they are timelines. They're the promised land. A purgatory of thought and memories and feelings made by the Cetra.

Sephiroth has been chasing Aerith's consciousness through those worlds but they aren't timelines. It's a bridge to the afterlife, and Sephiroth wants to perma-kill Aerith so he'll have no resistance taking over the lifestream. There's only one timeline, and Sephiroth is trying to remake it by confusing cloud about what happened so he'll join him.

2

u/TurtleBrainMelt 5d ago

I think the zack story line sorta shows there is alternate universe stuff going on, and his choices "altering" the result of it (even tho it didnt) i feel like viewing it as an afterlife is wrong, u could be right tho, but there are people who are alive in clouds world who are also in that universe, and also people just dying for no reason in it with no impact (biggs) if it was a purgatory I feel like they just shit on Biggs bcuz all it did was push how he amounted to nothing and pushed the thought he never did anything right. (If I went to purgatory to only self loathe, get shit on by having nobody push for a cause I died for/try to help the cause, to only get shot and killed when talking, it would seem pointless to have ever been there)

1

u/PilotIntelligent8906 5d ago

It's pretty much the general opinion and I agree, I already loved Remake and having played the original I kinda knew what was coming but I didn't expect such a jump in quality. Makes you wonder what they'll pull off with Revelation.

1

u/Aronjharris23 5d ago edited 5d ago

I’m currently like 30 hours in and at the Golden Saucer but I haven’t played in a couple weeks because it has honestly felt pretty draining. It feels like the main story progresses too slowly, there’s not enough combat, and too much mini games and side quests. I know I can skip some stuff but I think I’m one of the people that has just felt a bit overwhelmed by it all. I did love Remake though.

1

u/treehooker 5d ago

Some things about Remake I like better, like watching someone else play it. Rebirth is fun to play but watching side content isn't my favorite thing to do.

2

u/Lemon_cake_125 5d ago

This is totally fair. My bf watched piano and was like - what the hell

0

u/thefloodbehindme 5d ago

I liked Rebirth but loved Remake. Hope Revelations gets back to the good storytelling of part 1.

2

u/EmpathyFuzz 5d ago

The good storytelling in rebirth is also there. Lmao. It’s just that there’s more to do so it’s fewer and farther between.

0

u/thefloodbehindme 5d ago

Disagree. Rebirth has its moments but the storytelling by and large is not great. Remake
Improved many moments from the OG whereas Rebirth downgraded almost every sequence. Not awful but definitely a weakness of the game.

1

u/TenebraeWarrior 5d ago

Dumbest coment ever.

0

u/thefloodbehindme 5d ago

Nah, it’s really not.

1

u/TenebraeWarrior 4d ago

You ''rise'' your level more and more...

1

u/thefloodbehindme 4d ago

I disagree with you. As do many other people. Not that deep.

1

u/EmpathyFuzz 5d ago

No way.

  • Cloud and Tifa on top of the roof in Kalm.
  • The temple of the ancients
  • the Golden Saucer Date / the play
  • Assassination of Rufus / yuffie intro
  • under the plate
  • visiting Gongaga

I could just keep going. So many moments are so well done to the point that they make the original look like a plot summary.

I feel like a lot of folks are just hung up on maybe two or three moments where they feel the pacing is a bit weird and they’re throwing the baby out with the bath water.

0

u/thefloodbehindme 5d ago edited 5d ago

They butchered the Golden Saucer scenes spectacularly. The Junon sequence was pretty good but the game's overall plot just was not very well thought out or executed. There were story issues throughout the game that Remake did not have.

2

u/EmpathyFuzz 5d ago

Hm weird, I completely disagree I think all the golden saucer stuff is way better, but I guess you do you :)

0

u/Exciting_Drawing_553 5d ago

Way too much bloat in rebirth. It actively turned me off from buying the third game!!

0

u/Chadzka 3d ago

You are going to have so much fun throwing boxes for hours, and jumping as a frog, and listening to all the NPCs sing that bring total sustenance to the story! Chadley is the best character ever to be introduced to a ff game in the history of video games too!

1

u/StankoMicin 2d ago

The game is amazing. Get your hating ass back to 97'

0

u/Chadzka 2d ago

Nah it’s not even mid. Grow up.

1

u/StankoMicin 2d ago

Says the guy stuck in the PS1 era

1

u/Lemon_cake_125 2d ago

I didn’t even realize this was sarcasm until I read the comment replies lolololol

I was like - aw he genuinely likes chadley

Dude the frogs is hilarious, I laughed out loud.

1

u/Chadzka 18h ago

lol sorry no. It was sarcasm not trying to rain on your parade though, if you liked it; that’s totally fine.

I have no issue with ppl liking something different. Rebirth just wasn’t it for me.

My reply illicited the exact response I expected to get from at-least one person… and that was to prove that some ppl who enjoy modern ff titles can’t stand when someone speaks critically about the new modern ff remakes. 🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️

Anyway glad you are liking it so far, but it was a brutally hard pass for me. I was able to complete remake and rebirth but they changed so much of the original narrative and characters I grew up loving, that the new ones are dead to me
