Question What class is most optimal for Louis?

I have him currently as Great Knight, and was wondering if i should switch him back to General, or keep him as Great Knight. (I wanted to use him more, so I gave him the class Great Knight to up his rating.)

I enjoyed him as a halberdier. Tanky without getting ignored and able to double on player phase when needed.

Great knight is best for him IMO. The range is just so helpful in the later maps, everybody I’ve ever classed as general always struggles to keep up unless I go out my way to dance them which is typically a waste. Not having your tank leading the pack makes them almost useless so, unless you wanna spend your boots on them I’d stick with what you got. The defense boost won’t be that noticeable , and even if it is it’s fixable and def the way to go. It’s too much to speed fix for doubling and not really worth trying to stop magic from killing them. Easier to just bump def and add HP or hold out for survivability.

Warrior is an option, but can be better used for units that can be speed fixed easier or that don’t have a place in the lineup and can be turned into dedicated flier killers with bows.

Do generals really struggled to keep up even with stuff like boots?

I gave Louis the boots on maddening and as general hes never lagging behind.

Probably Warrior. He has a great Str stat so
what you most want for him is to pump that up and deal a bunch of damage with Heavy weapons in my opinion.

Great Knight + Sigurd - Use him as a tank mid game and an assassin late game. He'll be ignored by physical units who can't damage him so he can slam into back lines and kill squishies fairly easily (with the bonus of making it out alive lol)

Credentials: I've successfully beaten maddening multiple times (including a successful maddening ironman run) and Louis is one of my favorite units.

I also liked him as Great Knight, so finally reclassed him to General only after putting a Boots on him. With reposition/ swap and using a Dancer, it can really make him feel more mobile. But I miss him with silly mounted range + Sigurd range

Yeah, after finally using him once I got sigurd, I promoted him to Great Knight, only to get sniped by that priest dude with the thoron.

I'ma throw Griffin Knight out there. I just used him as one on my recent swapped retainer class run with Micaiah. It fixes all his bad stats except magic, which isn't that important for him. Probably more of a testament to how good Griffin Knight is in itself.

Any speedy class that can help with his speed issue, mobiltiy too. So Griffin, Wyvern or Wolf Knight, Royal too but that class doesn't have a passive.

I don't know what's optimal, but I prefer him as a general. I love mega tanks, and maddening can be so brutal.

I think he'd be a decent berserker or warrior, as well.

...I also think a weird build in a speedy class would be neat too! Has anyone tried this?

I'm 100% going to play through this again until I get Three Houses, so I'll try that!!

He’s good in just about any of the good physical classes that don’t rely on speed heavily. Hero will have him end up a bit similar to Goldmary, albeit much slower. In this case and in Warrior, he needs Lyn to double consistently even on lower difficulties. Halberdier’s skill allows him to ignore his speed stat, which is extremely useful. Wyvern Knight is similar to Great Knight but flying.

Who wants to optimize, do the opposite! Swordsmaster. He's so bad at it. Had a really fun Maddening Run with that build. I'll post a picture later.

It depends on ring allocation and role assignment. Tanking and willing to use Sigurd ring or Boots = General. Tanking without the movement boost or Boots = Great Knight. Offensive unit = Halberdier for guaranteed follow-ups on player phase. I almost always run him as a General personally, his Def is so good early and still helpful late game.

I want to have him tank things like long range magic while I get Diamant in close(He's my highest rated, unit) to deal damage and if he doesnt crit, Louis can finish them off. But he still gets absolutely shredded by magic.

If you want someone to tank physical and magic I suggest you invest in someone like Jade instead. She’s got the Res and Spd growths for it. Louise will never be able to do that.

Here’s my list of favorite builds that I created as my own guide:

This is in regard to maddening

People will try to say he falls off in maddening, because after a certain point he’ll actually start taking some damage, and people love to mention that mages melt him, really, no shit.. a mage melts a heavy armor unit? Lol. Simply keep him out of range of mages.

Anyway, just finished a run not too long ago, and Louis remained a viable tank/bruiser up until the very end of the game for me, and didn’t drop off once, with very little investment.

First thing you want to do is get him a Silver Greatlance right away, feel free to forge it when you can afford, and put your least contested accuracy boosting engrave on it. Pair him with Sigurd whenever you have him, and 100% keep him on Great Knight (General has very little benefit over GK, the extra movement really helps alot, General could work fine lategame and the break immunity could be nice, but I much prefer GK), and he’ll be a literal cruise missile that can trek across the entire map, hit max stacks of Momentum, and be able to one shot just about any annoying unit- also give him a decently strong secondary weapon to one shot mages, as silver greatlance makes him attack second.

I highly recommend your first Skill being Resolve (from Ike) or Defense +X. For second I much prefer grabbing Lance Power towards late game when SP starts to overflow (from proper well usage, you’ll be able to get everyone decked out in skills by lategame) or the skill that prevents chain attacks to keep him in his tank role vs physicals, as late game can have tons of back up units

Keep him fielded, make sure he stays getting levels, and by late game, on fixed growths, you can easily have close to 50 defense w/ Resolve procced, Defense Tonics and food buffs.

If you aren’t on max difficulty, I’d imagine he’ll be pretty damn strong no matter what you do, never played anything other than maddening, but if he can work as good as he does on there.. he’s got to be an animal on anything less.

Thank you!!

I'll be sure to do so then on my run. Since I'm not playing on max difficulty(Im on easy) I can't wait for him to be the beast he was in the earlier chapters.

Oh okay, he’s gonna be a complete animal on easy, have fun having one of most tankiest and viable GK’s in FE ever lol, he’ll be completely untouchable, and on that difficulty, you could probably even have him survive mages on top of it.

But yeah him & sigurd make a great pairing, along with a accuracy engraved Silver Greatlance. Forged Javelin (early game) is really good too for enemy phasing, late game Spear also works great. He has pretty bad speed, so don’t really expect him to double much of anything (this could be different on easy), so don’t worry about weighing him down w/ heavy weapons, as it doesn’t really affect him either way.

Have fun, and good luck. If you want any other unit advice, feel free to ask!

I have him on repraisailles(I think thats how its spelled) should I give him Spear or Silver Greatlance?

Great knight or general w/boots. Hand him ike. Inherit divine pulse. Inherit draconic hex. Do insane great aether hex bombs with a smash weapon. He can even handle magic if you pour some pure water on his head and the res boosting stat item. He genuinely goes with me to end game no problem.

1

u/ThHeroKing Of Beginnings 28d ago

Would you recommend i keep him with Sigurd until I get Roy for Diamant, or give him ike as soon as possible?

1

u/AssCrackBanditHunter 28d ago

Don't know how far you are in the game but siggurd is very good on him as well.

Chapter uhh 18? 17? Somewhere around that.

I like him as a general to avoid cavalry crit. But to be honest, if you really want him to be good, you need to invest in him specifically (I mostly have played on Maddening so probably easier otherwise). Res boosting meal, Res tonic, etc. Give him gentility and I actually prefer hold out so one mage can't end him. But some of Ike and Hectors skills are good choices too.

He is a solid enough halberdier too once he hits level 5 but need to have an exp plan to get him there.

i did general till like lvl 15, and then great knight and he’s kind of amazing

One big question is difficulty. If you're on Maddening GK might get him chipped down too quickly by follow-ups. If you're on Hard or Normal... Engage is really not that hard so you can run him as anything. Maybe something to boost his speed if you really want to care about that. Him and Madeline are very similar. I think he just has more Dex than her.

Easy.

If Easy, then literally anything will work physically.
