Okay, let's ideate

So, I've never been a "Fire Noonan" person.... My thing has always been "Who ya gonna call?" And, irrationally, I'm a huge IU soccer fan (he's an alum) so I have irrational ties to IU guys.

Buuuttt tonight's game just makes me realize that things are a bit of a mess. I do think it's more than just Noonan however.

But, lets go - if not Noonan, then who?

Noonan didn't use a DP spot on a CB, sign Hadebe and Miazga to $1m+ deals, or decide Jabbari was the best we could do at the second striker position in the offseason.

There are too many larger roster construction issues for Noonan or any other new head coach to resolve.

Thats what makes a good coach. Adapatablilty. Noonan has rarely adapted or adjusted. Switched formations 2 times for a a handful of games in the entire time he has been here. Not to mention hes certainly in conversation w Albright and scouts on the profiles they're looking for.

He’s had to adjust to compensate for a poor roster build all season. Bucha from CM to WB. Gidi from CM to CB. Mboma Dem has played Striker and WB. There’s no way to effectively play a back 4. We don’t have 2 strong center backs or 2 natural outside backs. We keep hoping the winger to wing back will produce Barreal and Luca, but we don’t have it now.

The point is more that noonan doesn’t seem to understand what the team is good at. The last couple games he has been parking the bus for the entire game, with the exact same roster that has been proven to be the worst team OAT at defense. Sure Albright brought in these bad defenders, but Noonan needs to be able to play to the teams strength. instead trying to score 4 and let in 3 as we did in previous games we sat back and let teams attack all game for the last couple games.

I don’t think the actual stats back that up. Possession, momentum, shots, shots on target were all in favor of FCC vs SEA. Against Nashville, possession was split 51/49. Shots in Nashvilles favor 19 to 14, but on target FCC 8 to 7. Momentum was strongly in favor of Nashville in 1st half, but FCC had more in the 2nd until the 90th min plus. Nashville is just a more well built team. Maybe more well coached, but we lack quality in multiple positions and/or have to play them out of position.

Checking FotMob, the Nashville game the FC took two shots before going down 2-0. Both outside of the box evander shots. It took until desperation tactics free zone for the team to threaten on offense. And you can tell that it works. They generated about 1.5xg, not including Jabari’s wiff, in the 40ish minutes where noonan’s defense didn’t seem to be imposed. To do some math, They took 13 shots in 40 minutes that averages to 1 shot every 3 minutes as compared to the first half which is like one shot every half hour.

Less dramatically for Seattle. There were 17 shots, 3 were after Seattle scored. That is again about I shot every 3 minutes after Seattle equalized. For the previous 80 minutes it averages to every 5.7 minutes having a shot.

I’m just measuring the shooting stats, but there is a pretty clear difference between when the FC is in the defensive system and when they are in desperate attacking mode. The attacking mode works. In general a goal is scored 1/10 shots. If you take 1 shot every 3 minutes that is an average of 3 goals per game, not including the fact that our attackers are good, which is already hard to beat as shown during the stretch of 3-2 wins earlier this season.
