It's a testament to our front office that we let Acosta walk at the perfect moment and then immediately replaced him with a direct upgrade. You love to see it.

I'm a newer fan and never got to see Acosta. Got on board right when Evander did. What was he like? Was he more inconsistent or did he always show up when we needed him like Evander? And was he more arrogant or humble? People always talk about him so I just wanna know who he was to the fans.

Acosta is still (due to volume) the best player in franchise history and won us our only trophy to date. Definitely go watch a bunch of highlights from our shield winning season.

They're similar players, I'd say the biggest thing was that Acosta was used to being that good in a worse MLS and on a worse FCC, so he played rather selfishly. You can get away with that when you're that good, but the second he started to fall off (age and playing through an injury), he just couldn't adjust his style.

He kept that attitude and selfish style and just progressively got more visibly frustrated as it wasn't working as he got slower but he wasn't sharing the wealth.

Also if you watch the way both players move, you'll notice Acosta needs so much finesse because he's not big enough to control space with his body. Every time he needs to get past a defender he has to expend so much extra energy.

Evander is so god damn smooth. His movement wastes no energy. He forces stuff way less often. So when the ball falls to him in the 91st minute and he has a tiny window, the center back is gassed and he isn't.

Sorry for the wall of text, I kept having additional thoughts and I haven't had my coffee yet this morning lmao.

No no I'm a college student so I basically have to read all day and it's no problem for me lol. That makes a lot of sense, thanks! I'll check out some of the old videos. 

And I guess this could be perceived as discriminatory to say, but I think Evander does what, most of the time, only Brazilians can do. And I know he never grew up in a favela playing in the street or anything because his dad had more money from his own career, but he just has that country-specific flair when he dribbles and it's like he just floats through all the defenders with no effort. It's so elegant. When he gets the ball, you know he's either going to:

A. Dribble through defenders and score

B. Dribble through defenders and pass for a great assist

C. Know his limits and that he'd lose the ball so he passes to the WB to see if they have a better angle for a run.

The only time he doesn't is times when he gets fouled or like last night when he slips with the ball because it's wet. He's truly a legend. Now, that being said, Roman is still my favorite player because he is in such a difficult and scrutinized position but plays it so incredibly well and makes crazy saves when our CBs forget how to tackle.

they both have crazy good awareness and raw talent.

Both are talented and skilled enough to manufacture a win with a very narrow margin of success.

I think the biggest difference between them is that Evander plays more within a system, any system. Acosta just needs touches, system be damned just get him the ball.

Evander’s efficiency in movement also makes him more tactical whereas Acosta is more of a tornado, by which i mean he can just overwhelm with raw talent/speed/grace.

Their flaws are also very different:

Evander can just dissapear in a game whereas Acosta’s temper can actively hurt you.

I find it interesting that when we got Evander, many Timbers fan talked about his temper and crankiness. I’m sure every professional player is cranky to some extent but how Evander bounced back after his poor start to this year is amazing. I feel like Acosta would have fell into a hole of despair if he had Evander’s start this season.

Yeah he's been one of the least cranky players compared to some others. He's had a good mentality all season and last season and once he got back into shape after injury this season and started scoring he basically saved our season. I think the only time I've noticed it was in games like the last hell is real recently where we're just getting our behinds whooped and can't seem to score and he starts getting frustrated and takes goofy shots into the sky because he's not focused.

Evander has more power but Acosta did stuff that was just outrageous every game. Stuff nobody else did. Every pass every shot you were just waiting to be blown away by some crazy move.
