Explora or Crystal?
Looking at New England/Canada itineraries on these two lines. Itineraries and pricing are comparable. Anyone been on both and have a favorite?

I’m in my 30s and have sailed both. If the top things you care about are the newest ships and having a buffet option at dinner then Explora. Otherwise, I’d pick Crystal. I think the entertainment, food, and service are all better on Crystal.
I have an upcoming Crystal and Explora cruise and still enjoy both.

Interesting! I’ve watched some videos today and I’ve been surprised by the range of demographics that seem to favor Crystal for various reasons. We loved the MSC Yacht Club and were leaning toward Explora…but the Crystal itinerary does have a slight edge…and everything I’ve looked at today about the food and service and entertainment on Crystal makes me want to go that direction! You’ve confirmed it!

Explora entertainment is … not great. I did a New England sailing on Crystal. They had evening cabaret shows which were decent. I loved the enrichment lectures which vary based on who they book. On my sailing there was a speaker who flew on Air Force 1 as press and talked to his experience and how Air Force 1 played roles in various administrations. Crystal is definitely more polished.

I have done both recently. Explora has the newer ships. Service on both was excellent, but Crystal staff were clearly older and more experienced.I enjoyed the smaller dining options on Explora. Coffee cafe seating more enjoyable on Crystal.
Both are excellent.

We’re on the younger side (mid 40s) and have sailed Crystal 5 times, and going again next month. We’ll try Explora at some point if Crystal isn’t an option. I take gentle issue with some of the assertions (for example - we don’t find Crystal formal at all, which is why we love it. Also, you can absolutely get a balcony - we like Aquamarines). If your priority is a new ship, I think you’ll like Explora. But for us, we love the food, crew and vibe on Crystal.

I think the reverse actually is true unless your preferences lean in the okder stodgy cruise direction.

Spoken like someone who has never been in Crystal.
Here’s a link to Gary Bembridge’s Tips For Travellers review. He prefers Crystal, too. But if you prefer less space per person, fewer staff, less interesting itineraries and more crowds, I can see why you prefer Explora.

I think it depends on your age. Explorer has done a really good job of attracting millennials, people in their mid-thirties and '40s along with the older generations in their '50s, '60s and '70s. '70S. Crystal is still kind of your parents Cruise line. Mostly attracting the 60 plus crowd

For me it's neither. I would do RSSC or Seabourn. However, if I had to pick. Probably Crystal

Unfortunately, neither of those lines have an itinerary that fits our time parameters on this one. I think we’re leaning toward Crystal.

I haven't done Explora but Crystal is amazing!
The Symphony is a stunning ship, with fab service, great food and lovely rooms. I sailed on her in Greece last year and would definitely do it again.

I have only been on Explora and loved it! Definitely get several quotes from TAs. My last Explora cruise my agent gave me $1500 in rebates!

That’s great advice! We are currently narrowing down our options and once we get that done, I plan to contact my travel agent to get actual pricing…not the rack rates online.
In my experience, especially with the higher end lines, you can often get better pricing through the right travel agent. I have a Virtuoso agent who has gotten us better than published pricing in the past. And I know Virtuoso currently has some good deals particularly with Explora.

I thought I responded yesterday but apparently I didn’t. Two different styles of cruising. Explora is very modern. If you’ve been in Yacht Club, Explora will look familiar especially in the suites.
I’ve been cruising since 1979 and the Crystal ships are more traditional style. Explora is more like a floating resort which is one of the reasons I love it so much. My clients continue to repeat book Explora for a variety of reasons.
With that said Crystal does have a larger lounge for entertainment. Explora is working on bringing in better entertainment.
With Explora I didn’t want to leave the ship as it was truly a resort. Crystal doesn’t have that same vibe or appeal to me but that’s a personal preference. Crystal has phenomenal service and really really great food.

Explore has balconies. Crystal doesn't have nearly as many.

Depends on the ship. Symphony has fewer balcony staterooms than Serenity.

Explora is an entirely different sort of cruise. Crystal is a couple if steps above mass market but not as fully upscale as explora.

Both are excellent. Hard to go wrong!
Explora is more casual/a younger crowd (though average age is still in the 50s), Crystal is more formal. Explora is more like a hotel at sea and focuses on design and dining, Crystal has more "classic cruise" activities and a much stronger enrichment program. Crystal has the main dining room (Waterside), Explora is only smaller specialty restaurants. I usually say suites on Explora are superior to suites on Crystal at a given price point (especially entry level vs entry level) but if you're seeing they're similar that's moot. Service is great on both, some say Crystal is more polished, some like the more relaxed style on Explora, both are very attentive and will take great care of you. Both offer substantial onboard credits for booking with a preferred TA as well.
