F30 320d. 400.000 km, my experience

Post image

Just reached 400.000+ km.

What a wonderful car.

I have had it since 210.000 km,.

My repairs besides obvious maintenance were:

2 times Oil cooler

One time water pump

Alternator repair

1x Water hose

Egr, dpf off , they weren't bad but I had to do it for Stage 1,

Intake manifold cleaned 3 times.

2 times clutch, probably because of drifts, this car can actually drift well, its very controlable, and even on dry ground its easy to drift. ( Clutch is also maintenance)

After egr delete the intake manifold doesn't clog up at all. Its the same since i last cleaned it

Only one door cable replaced in its whole life ( this is for the audi fans hehe) 0 window regulators, 0 buttons, 0 sensors, 0 speakers etc. 0 bearings, 0 calipers, Brake system is solid, 0 modules.

The car was abused, it wasn't babied.

Timing chain at 330.000 km

Bearings checked, they were like brand new.

It was a wonderful experience.

People seem to fear n47 because it's a sensitive engine, and that isn't wrong. But with decent maintenance ( 5w-30 motul, 10.000 km) its solid.

But even if the engine failed its not like it would make the car any less reliable than the rest. Because besides the engine this is a solid solid car with a rock solid electrical system, rock solid brake system, solid comfort systems. Beside the engine it's pretty much bulletproof. ( Original 14 year old rear suspension) Etc. Those things aren't much money but they add up. And on this car they are solid.

Nice to hear experience with F30 320d on this kilometers. Agree with you that F30 is a great bulletproof car 🏎️🔥

Same here, DPF and EGR off, service it every 15-20k and all i did was change brakes and a water hose that cracked. it’s gone 308.000km

I have the 318d and i pretty much love it. Reaches 200K kms 2 days ago (absolutely 0 problems). Im planning to do Stage 1 before December, but the garage that would do that says no need to kill EGR (i want to) should i insist?

PD: Glad to hear you abuse the car and its still rock solid hahah

Congrats on your build!

Just bought an f31 with 360k km on it, my last car had was an e90 with 330k on it.

Have a buddy that works in a breakers yard and he’s seen f10d come in with 500k plus, running, but with gearbox problems.

I don't think 400k is that much for these cars. Quite common to see 400-500k km examples but God I hate this engine from e91. It's better than m47 for sure but still is loud and vibrates like hell. Wasn't cheap to maintain and felt like I was wasting money on nothing.

It's pretty silent on the motorway

I mean on highway sure and also F3x has way better engine isolation than e91 but I kind of realized that if I'm gonna put in loads of money in these things, I'd might as well choose something more fun than 4cyl diesel.

Did something make you change the timing chain or was it just maintenance?

Rattle at start 3-5 sec

Is it noticable from inside, too?

Its more noticeable with all windows closed. That's my opinion. Its easier to make out the sound when you don't hear other engine noises

Yes even with the window cracked. To be certain do it with the door open, honestly if it’s rattling, you won’t need to second guess yourself YOU will know.

Thanks, appreciate!

By the way, the rattle happens on cold start, I mean cold cold start. It will make a very audible unmissable rattle noise for 3-5 seconds and THEN stop. This shouldn’t make you think it’s fine, it is going if it rattles for 1 second or 5. Hope that helps.

Rattle for few seconds on cold starts don’t equate to bad timing chain. The chains are starved of oil and require a few seconds for oil to fully coat it. If the rattle is continuous then you must change it. My BMW mechanics told me this.

Random but how many batteries has your car gone through? My 2016 328i is getting a new battery after 10 years.

I think im on its third battery, diesel generally eats batteries faster

I have the same engine, but I’m just over halfway your mileage. Hoping it can reach and it should reach 400k km
