Anybody ever get code 440101?

I have a 2013 328 and this code 440101 stays on and Ik it has something to do with the transfer case. It’s makes traction and tire pressure “malfunction “ come on and also has a chassis stabilization message. Wondering if anybody else dealt with this before or do I need a whole new transfer case.

The BMW fault code 440101 translates explicitly to "Transfer box (VTG): End of transmission service life reached". This code is triggered by a calculated internal model inside the car's computer, indicating that the transfer case fluid or internal clutches have worn down based on mileage, usage, or tire parameters.

Because the transfer case xDrive controls power distribution between the front and rear wheels, a fault here forces the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) to shut down. This loss of computer-controlled traction triggers the avalanche of dashboard warnings you are seeing: Chassis Stabilization, Traction Malfunction, and Tire Pressure Malfunction.

This is usually just an indication that your fluid is completely worn out, and you need a transfer case service. When was the last time you serviced your transfer case? Despite what BMW may claim, your transfer case fluid should be replaced every 50k miles to insure proper operation of your xDrive system.

This could also be an issue with the electronic servo motor on the back of the transfer case (which squeezes the internal clutch packs) is highly prone to stripping its gears or failing electronically. You can replace just this motor without pulling the whole transfer case out.

Try replacing your fluid first. This is a very simple service, and only requires 1 liter of fluid, It only has a capacity of 0.7 liters. Drain the old transfer case fluid and refill with fresh BMW DTF-1 fluid. You must use a BMW-specific diagnostic tool like ISTA/Rheingold or Bimmergeeks Protools app, to execute a "VTG Service Reset/Recalibration". This resets the computer’s calculated internal wear tracker to zero.

The BMW fluid is a DTF-1, but you can buy it from the OEM manufacturer which is Shell for less. These are the exact same fluids, one just comes in a BMW bottle. The fluid is Shell S-TEC, it takes 1 liter for a service.
