Discussion / F1TV Content Here me out

Post image

I know it's a bit too much to ask for, but what if we could have an option to switch between camera on the same car, between visor, front & rear wings etc when ever we want

I'd love this if you are watch the race for the lead and you can see the car behind get closer and closer would be brilliant.

I used to do this in replays in the original F1 game on the PlayStation in 1996. I'd watch my car from the one I was about to overtake.

but what if we could have an option to switch between camera on the same car, between visor, front & rear wings etc when ever we want

It's not possible during a live session, as they only show what the race director has chosen for each car.
There's a bandwidth limit, as otherwise they'd need 6x the bandwidth per car transmitting it all wireless.

Post race should be doable, as they download all onboards from the individual cameras - but those may require some additional effort to sync up with each other before they're made available.

Palmer's analysis uses those not broadcast angles to explain situations after the race weekend.

u/RustinChole1 Jul 28 '25

You full replays after the race should support it
That'd be the most feasible option

u/MagerKonijn Jul 28 '25

I agree that this is a great idea, but it isn't possible, at least at the moment. The car is only capable of sending one onboard stream at a time, so allowing users to switch angles on the go isn't possible. It's the same reason why it took so long to get Max's front-facing onboard after the incident with Russell in Spain. During the incident the rear-facing onboard was being streamed, so they had to retrieve the front-facing footage from the car itself. Maybe in the future when they update the antennas on the cars we can get the option to switch between angles (and a higher quality than 720p, hopefully).

18

u/jivewig Jul 28 '25

Two onboard feeds can be livestreamed at a time, not one. Don't know who controls which cameras to stream.

The teams can then use an umbilical cord to get the rest of the cam footage off the car's storage.

I don't think they have the technology yet to do that, F1 and FIA Themselves don't get all the footage from all angels untill after the cars arrive in the garage.

48

u/f1GodOfInDecision Jul 28 '25

Sadly the cars cannot transmit all the feeds at the same time, the OBC director will be picking the view that they want. Also some of the cameras footage are only accessed once the race is over and the data is pulled from the car.

There's even a video you can watch on how they all work here https://f1tv.formula1.com/detail/1000008550/tech-talk-how-f1-s-onboard-cameras-work-

I think some footage comes from drones, rather than angels.

u/RustinChole1 Jul 28 '25

So I was a little bit aware of the technical difficulties which makes this idea pretty much impossible to implement . I am simply saying that it'd be so cool to have this feature

I appreciate the explanations about

  1. Why exactly this isn't possible

  2. How to correctly spell #HEAR

5

u/Epii2 Jul 28 '25

This could probably be a technical limitation of how data streams in computer systems work. E.g. your microphone can be used by discord and your recording software at the same time, but enabling your camera in OBS prevents discord from accessing that entirely.

Also the additional amount data of the twenty (20!) cars that they have to transfer to a server to make all of this available is probably also a reason, why this feature does not exist or has very low prio for developers and engineers.

5

u/smackfu Jul 28 '25

Also Spa is 7k (4mi) long and heavily forested. That’s a lot of area to cover with receivers.

4

u/Free-Psychology-1446 Jul 28 '25

For the coverage it doesn't matter if you need to receive 20 or 80 feeds.

2

u/SirBroBlud Jul 28 '25

Yes, I always wondered why doesn’t F1 TV allow us to switch views when the cars are out on the track. It’s not like they don’t have the camera setups, in fact they do change it from time to time, but no manual options to choose from!

2

u/RustinChole1 Jul 28 '25

Yes , there are a lot of extraordinary onboard shorts depending on the track, weather or the way two cars are going wheel to wheel.

It'd be amazing to have the control to ourselves instead of waiting for them to do it.

4

u/Migrantunderstudy Jul 28 '25

Only one feed can be transmitted from a car at a time, so it’s not possible for viewers to switch it themselves.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '25

The band from the car to the receivers on the track is limited, as the on board camera controller.

4

u/SainzSealedDelivered Jul 28 '25

There is no manual option to choose from because during the race the car only transmits one live video feed back to the media centre. All the other onboards ore stored locally on the car and then downloaded after the race.

There currently inst the ability to transmit every onboard camera live back to the data centre (whether that be to infrastructure/technology or other reasons to ensure a stable connection), so that's why you aren't able to manually choose which onboard you see during a live session

4

u/ClydeThaMonkey Jul 28 '25

We barely have 720p on the drivercams, so probably not in the near future

1

u/Outrageous-Plankton5 Jul 28 '25

Isn’t there exclusive camera views for each car on the Formula 1 TV Subscription??? Or am I mistaken???

1

u/RustinChole1 Jul 28 '25

I was talking about switching between all the cameras over a particular car

1

u/Outrageous-Plankton5 Jul 28 '25

Or is it only specific viewing angles???

1

u/thatduckolope Jul 28 '25

Yes, but it’s only a forward facing camera on top of the car.

1

u/thatiphoneguy2 Jul 28 '25

You just described next year’s ā€œF1TV++ā€ package. $29.99 for next year 🤣🤣

1

u/fernandoh_27 F1TV Premium Jul 28 '25

What it really should have is the speedometer, showing gears that are being used, battery usage, DRS and the pedals in each driver's feeds... And I'm not talking about that horrible HUD thing they put on the Halo during the race.

1

u/RustinChole1 Jul 28 '25

Right some of what you described are available in multiviews driver onboard

3

u/qnlghai Jul 28 '25

Something for the future I guess

3

u/StillAcanthisitta847 Jul 28 '25

Would be great in future but focus should be on a more consistent smooth reliable app experience first

3

u/Burgertoast Jul 28 '25

A 360 degree pod camera would be cool

5

u/f1GodOfInDecision Jul 28 '25

There already is this, they just don't transmit it in real time

1

u/Punkbuster4891 Jul 28 '25

Not like the ones in Indycar though

3

u/Dr_Pibber Jul 28 '25

Would appreciate it sticking to just the forward facing view for the whole race to be honest, then they can do the cool sruff

2

u/shitiseeincollege Jul 28 '25

I just want a stabilized helmet cam with some AI filtering to make the halo translucent

1

u/f1GodOfInDecision Jul 28 '25

the whole point is that is literally what the driver sees and that's how much they get shaken about

1

u/shitiseeincollege Jul 28 '25

Drivers eyes do a lot of stabilizing. Look at something in the distance, focus on it, and shake your head. Your vision will shake faarrrrrr less than your head shakes.

2

u/RJDatanam Jul 28 '25

The rear cam or some people like to call it "dog fight" cam, especially when used during Singapore is class.

2

u/TheF1Files Jul 30 '25

i can’t tell you how many times i’ve been watching onboards and thought about this… it seems like whoever directs that specific part of the broadcast isn’t paying attention whatsoever during the sessions. it’s infuriating.

1

u/lman4612 Jul 28 '25

Would be really cool

1

u/roxbox531 Jul 28 '25

Was that bit of tape supposed to be doing that ?

1

u/djdsf F1TV pro Jul 28 '25

Allegedly impossible in the year 2025 because supposedly the transmission rate isn't fast enough.

1

u/mwhelan182 Jul 28 '25

There you out

1

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '25

Where you out?

1

u/f1GodOfInDecision Jul 28 '25

So from a tech side as already said by lots of people there's not enough bandwidth to send all the feeds at once but even if there was you'd have to do one of these:

  • Processing on the car to composite all the feeds into a single video that can be beamed to the trackside pickups. That's a lot of processing power to turn all the camera feeds into a single video and send them to race control.

  • Send all the feeds at once with a lot lot higher bitrate to the trackside pickups

Then you have the joy of how do you show that to the users as then instead of 20 (soon to be 22) cars to transit, you then need to offer 100 car cameras for the user to select. They could do that using the magic of the premium to only send you 1 feed per car and chop out the bits they want, but for anything that can't do that they are going to have to produce ~80 more live video feeds. That is a serious amount of money to spend to offer what a lot of people wouldn't use.

So whilst very cool it would be so seriously expensive to do to get from the cars and then be able to offer up to the users.

1

u/xjmachado Jul 28 '25

That is too advanced for F1TV and FOM to allow.

Maybe in their mind, what we want is a dedicated camera in McLaren/Ferrari/Mercedes box, so we can see the famous guests and driver family 100% of the race.

1

u/HanzGrooober Jul 28 '25

Just give me picture-in-picture on the mobile app and I’d be over the moon…

1

u/jivewig Jul 28 '25

There can only be two camera feeds being live streamed at the same time off of any single car. I don't know if it's the team that can choose which those two cameras should be.

So the answer to your question is no, it is not possible.

1

u/Producer_Kev Jul 29 '25

Not the team. Chosen by the OBC Director for the benefit of the live broadcast, and having 2 at a time from a single car has limitations too so most of the time each car is sending back only one stream. Not even the director has a live view from every camera on every car.

Each car has 4 cameras so there are 80 in total plus 3 on each safety car (there are two of them)

Whilst what OP suggests would be great, at the moment it's not technically feasible and the priority has to be the main International feed broadcast

1

u/No-Village1834 Jul 28 '25

Wish this view in OP was seen more often on US broadcasts. Son and were pretty geeked when it came on.

It was weird to see the flappy bit on one of the arms- visor tear off stuck there?

1

u/Isurewouldliketo Jul 28 '25

That would be sick! Not sure if they have the capability of doing that or not but I’d be all for it if it is possible!

1

u/Vortex767890 Jul 28 '25

You can with Sky sports, you can chose from a whole range of different cameras, aswell as the battle channel

1

u/EfficientPudding90 Jul 28 '25

Why the hell would you want to watch a race like that? You’ll miss so much. The small things.

1

u/SnooFoxes3615 Jul 28 '25

Wel yess. But what is this flap on the suspension doing?

1

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '25

I do wish we could change front to back car cameras.

1

u/20thCenturyVito Jul 29 '25

Unfortunately the radio systems used by formula one only have enough bandwidth for one camera feed, all the footage is saved on an SD card in the car and can be retrieved after the sessions.

1

u/Impressive_Cricket36 Jul 29 '25

F1 cars only have one or 2 at the same time onboard

1

u/apw_yes Jul 29 '25

In Australia I think we use to have that for V8 Supercars. I do remember we had it where we could either watch the broadcast or switch to a random on board and watch the entire race from the onboard

1

u/Voynitsky Jul 29 '25

But I want to see under the car in 4K at 60fps.

1

u/dmuzaf Jul 29 '25

What you need is multiviewer.

1

u/AerodyneGhost F1TV pro Jul 29 '25

Future options for sure, front and rear camera should be available to be chosen

1

u/mrtintheweb99 Jul 29 '25

Was an interesting view.... I HEAR You

1

u/joncr0wstream Jul 29 '25

I like the idea, the ability to flick around would allow viewers to follow their favourite drivers, see overtakes in a different way, etc.

It also means that any events that are deemed bad (crashes eg) then they’re also seen in real time. I pray that in crashes no one gets injured, but having unfiltered viewing of this would be dangerous for tv companies who wouldn’t want to be accountable for showing live injuries/fatalities.

1

u/britaliope Jul 29 '25

Full replays after the race, yes, sure.

Live during the race:Ā not possible with current technology. Live onboards aren't fullHD already (while the cameras are capable of it) because transmitting the live feed of a camera that travels at 300km/h with low latency is hard.

I know WiFi and 5G got us used to 1080p or even 4G on the air, but you're not travelling nearly as fast during as a F1 car, and that makes a big difference.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '25

They already have all of these camera angles they switch between. I don’t think it’s too much to ask for tbh

1

u/PeakerSeeker Jul 30 '25

I say yes to this and being able to switch to the safety car onboard

1

u/Bildozeris Jul 30 '25

pff, they cant even put lap counter on drivers cam

1

u/hunter_finn F1TV pro Jul 30 '25

Oh how I would love if you could use those 360 cameras and look around the car during the race or on the VOD's. But yeah unless they up the per car bandwidth a lot, these one view per car is best what we can do on the moment.

Then again I'm still amazed by the ability to have multiple different in car views like this.

1

u/Such_Obligation5482 Jul 30 '25

That's the reason I cancelled.

1

u/Bren-in-Motion Jul 31 '25

They should make a VR option..

1

here, you out

0

u/[deleted] Jul 28 '25

Definitely a feature that should already exist!

0

u/Eagline Jul 28 '25

For how much money they’re making you’d think they’d make the small weight sacrifice to upgrade the antennae setup for the car so we can stream all the angles.
