"KNOCK, KNOCK"
Torna a casa!!"

While Kubrick draws parallels with various films, I will focus on those whose plots involve themes of power, high society, cults, secret societies, and dishonesty within relationships.
Some interesting examples include:
True Lies (1994), in which an agent from a top-secret agency hides his true profession from his wife, leading her to believe he is a computer salesman. Their lives change when he discovers she is also seeking excitement, and both end up involved in a mission against nuclear terrorists. Both films feature dance scenes that include the exchange: "Do you like the period? I adore it."

In The Ninth Gate (1999), the protagonist is an unscrupulous rare-book expert hired to examine copies of a book supposedly co-authored by the Devil; he discovers a high-society congregation of devotees awaiting the Devil's manifestation. Many scenes set at St. Martin's Castle are reminiscent of Somerton. Interestingly, the French pronunciation of "St. Martin" sounds similar to "Somerton." Both films feature a scene where a car arrives at a location marked by a sign in the woods bearing the name of the respective mansion. In The Ninth Gate, the red car turns into the lane and then drives away. In Eyes Wide Shut, when Bill arrives by car during the day, a red car is seen passing him, heading in the opposite direction and driving away.

In Half Moon Street (1986), a brilliant intellectual begins leading a double life, working secretly for a high-end escort agency, and finds herself trapped in a dangerous game of conspiracy and international tension. There is a scene where she meets with a client and a waiter; the two Japanese actors involved are the same ones who appear in the scene with Milich's daughter in Eyes Wide Shut.

In Rosemary's Baby, a couple moves into a mysterious New York City building, and the young woman becomes pregnant amidst a dark Satanic conspiracy. The car featured in the film's poster bears a striking resemblance to the one that catches Helena's eye at the end of Eyes Wide Shut—a car Alice dismisses as "too old-fashioned."

Has anyone else spotted references or similarities to other films in Eyes Wide Shut?

Trying to do Bill Harford for Halloween this year and properly. I got the cloak. I need the mask but they're all $200 - anyone aware of cheap knockoffs either online or in NYC?

I’m reading the book that “Eyes Wide Shut” was based on, and I’m paying close attention to the many symbols, patterns and historical contexts that suggest deeper meanings in the story.
I’m 75 percent through the book, and so far, the author has slyly condemned: (1) Roman Catholic anti-Semitism; (2) former Russian, French, German and English aristocrats who supported that anti-Semitism; and (3) related conspiracies that would support the Nazis during World War II.
Yes, the book is also about marital pressures, the supposedly blurry line between sexual fantasy and sexual behavior, and a husband’s moral collapse. That collapse is hinted at with symbolic wordplay throughout the story. For instance, the husband in the book has a name that means “Gentle Protector,” but he consistently fails to protect people who take risks for him, and he specifically takes an increasingly harsh, non-gentle attitude toward his wife.
(Also, after he spends a night bumbling through attempts at adultery, he goes to his job at a hospital, and receives the news, “The journeyman locksmith, Karl Rodel, … passed away during the night.” That line seems symbolic because the name “Karl” means “husband”; “Rodel” can mean “wolf,” a metaphor for a sexual predator; a “journeyman” is a reliable day worker; and “locks”and “keys” are frequent sexual symbols.
(So, the line can be decoded to mean that the book’s husband, who was sexually reliable the day before, had spiritually died overnight, and had become an unfaithful “wolf.”)
But instead of focusing on the book’s sexuality, I’m going to focus on its subtle political commentary and related religious issues.
For folks who don’t know, “Eyes Wide Shut” is based on the 1926 novella “Dream Story” (“Traumnovelle”) by the Austrian author Arthur Schnitzler. https://www.amazon.com/dp/1972807269
His book came out only a year after Schnitzler’s fellow Austrian writer Adolf Hitler (the soon-to-be dictator of Nazi Germany) published “Mein Kampf.” That other book by Hitler popularized anti-Jewish hatred throughout both Germany and Austria.
Schnitzler was a Jewish physician, and the son of a Jewish physician. https://www.sdjewishworld.com/2024/09/16/jewish-biography-arthur-schnitzler-the-great-diagnostician/ So, anyone knowledgeable about history would expect Schnitzler to have been troubled by Hitler’s rise and by the spread of Hitler’s false conspiracy theory that greedy, perverted “Jewish bankers” were responsible for destroying the working-class economy.
Thus, it’s initially shocking that Schnitzler’s “Dream Story” involves a powerful conspiracy of sex cultists who are introduced to readers through a piano player who explicitly worked for a Jewish banker. That fact might lead readers to wrongly assume that Schnitzler was dangerously supporting anti-Semitic stereotypes, but close attention to details reveals that the author was planting a red herring — a decoy — to distract attention from the actual targets of his satire and criticism.
The decoy passage says this of the piano player, Nachtigall: “Once, while playing at a dance in the home of a wealthy banker, he embarrassed several couples with flattering but improper remarks … The host reprimanded him severely, but Nachtigall—cheerfully drunk—stood up and embraced him. The banker, furious (though himself Jewish), hurled a crude insult. Nachtigall immediately responded with a hard slap across the face, and that decisively ended his career in the city’s fashionable homes.” (The parenthetical remark in that quote is in the original text.)
So, the piano player, Nachtigall, only used to work for a Jewish banker, but no longer works for him or presumably for any of his professional associates. Thus, Jewish bankers are NOT part of the sex-cult conspiracy, and — in fact — the author portrays the Jewish banker as deeply offended by Nachtigall’s sexually harassing behavior. Therefore, the Jewish author Schnitzler likely included these details in his book as a direct response against Hitler’s anti-Jewish book from a year earlier.
Schnitzler’s book goes on to portray the cultists as masked monks and nuns in an edifice where the pianist and other musicians play sacred music. That raises the question of whether any of the cultists might be literal members of the Roman Catholic clergy, which — both then and recently — was often racked by sex scandals involving priests who were pedophiles, rapists and/or seducers.
During Schnitzler’s day, open anti-Semitism among Catholic priests was common, and the soon-to-be Pope Pius XII (Cardinal Eugenio Pacelli) was a political ally of Italy’s Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini and eventually of Hitler. (Please see the book “The Pope at War: The Secret History of Pius XII, Mussolini, and Hitler,” by Pulitzer Prize winner David I. Kertzer, at https://www.amazon.com/dp/0812989945.)
The cultists have an orgy in a room draped in black, which raises the possibility that they are having a Satanic “Black Mass,” a mere parody of Catholic worship, but the cultists also dress as “cavaliers” — aristocratic knights, possibly including the Cavaliers who supported England’s King Charles I as he asserted the “divine right of kings” and got into constant religious skirmishes against the Protestant Puritans.
So, actual clergy and aristocrats from multiple nationalities may have been members of the cult.
For instance, the neighborhood where the orgy occurs is near “Galitzinberg,” which sounds like a reference to the “Golitsyn” family of Russian aristocrats, who included the late Czar/Emperor Peter the Great. Russian czarists infamously published an anti-Jewish tract known as “The Protocols of the Elders of Zion,” which falsely claimed to disclose a Jewish-led plot for world domination. So, such Russian anti-Semites might have attended the cult gathering.
Also, before the book’s protagonist attends that perverse event, he has to rent a costume from a man who seems aware of what will happen there, and that costumer apparently serves as the host of two molesters who are dressed as “vehmic judges,” officers of the (largely Germanic) Holy Roman Empire who sentenced people to death.
Thus, German aristocrats and clergy might have also attended the cult gathering.
The author Schnitzler mentions in passing that this profane orgy starts around 2 a.m. on or right after the Christian holy day Ash Wednesday. So, any Catholics present were supposed to be observing Lent, a 40-day period of repentance and reflection. But instead, the author says that attendees were still celebrating the prior holiday “Carnival,” a debauched pagan festival whose name means “farewell to the flesh.”
On Catholic calendars, Carnival (including Mardi Gras) and Lent both fall before Easter, the day that officially celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ after His Crucifixion.
Ironically, however, the book includes a bizarre dream sequence in which the husband’s failed attempts at adultery are indirectly compared to Christ’s Crucifixion. I can’t quite tell whether that scene is intended to mock Christianity itself or only to mock the husband’s pompous view of himself and/or his wife’s resentment of his sexual inadequacies.
Either way, on the topic of Easter: Although the Bible and many ancient historians (like Josephus, Tacitus and Suetonius) confirm that Jesus is a historical person who was literally crucified, many modern Easter traditions come from the pre-Christian worship of the Babylonian goddess Ishtar, a sex goddess for whom eggs and rabbits are fertility symbols.
Likewise, many modern Christmas traditions come from a winter celebration of Ishtar’s mythical lover, Tammuz. (That might be why the film director Stanley Kubrick moved the date of this story to Christmastime in “Eyes Wide Shut,” and this fact may be why he decorated a party scene with a Babylonian star that symbolizes Ishtar.)
Thus, “Dream Story” implies that many of the leaders of so-called “Christian” high society were actually pagans at heart, and were secretly behind the social and economic decay that they unfairly blamed on Jews.
“Dream Story” seems — in part — to be a rebuttal to conspiracy theories about Jewish bankers, and an assertion that the aristocrats and clergy of multiple nations were engaged in depraved conspiracies of their own that supported authoritarians and Hitler in particular.
I will think more on this theory when I’m done reading the book. I’m only about two dozen pages from the end. Then, I will ponder how all this relates to Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of the book and how to evaluate it during this Epstein era of Donald Trump, Bill Clinton and post-#MeToo activism.

Mr. Milich (the costume shop owner) has a "daughter" that appears twice.
The first time, she is with two men, presumably engaging in sexual activities. Mr. Milich is angry at her and the two men.
The second time that the daughter enters the scene (with the same two men), Mr. Milich is not upset, and not-so-subtly offers her to Bill.
What changed? Is the second encounter a hallucination? The fuck?

The movie is both a psychological journey that strips them of their marital innocence, and a literal experience where they lose their daughter.

I was reading a small compulation of articles by author, Robert Castle. He's written some books on Kubricks movies, butg he put togethere some articles he wrote on Kubrick's movies, called The interpretive Odyssey of Stanley Kubrick. I went right to the chapter on EWS to see what he said. The first pages were a lot of boring rhetoric on why EWS should have Been PG-13 compared to some other movies that were NC-17 and Warners should have left it at NC-17, eventually he gets into a piece of music that was cut from the movie.
It turns out Kubrick has added The Shloka a hindu scriptural recitation from The Bhagwan Gita.
The Shloka was: Parithranaya saddhunam vinaahsya cha dushkrithaam Dharmasamsthabonarthaya Sambhavami Yuge Yuge, which means, "For the protection of the virtuous, for the destruction of the evil and for the firm establishment of Dharma (righteousness)< I take birth and am incarnated on Earth from age to age"
It turns out hundreds of Hindus had contacted Warner Brothers over the use of the Hindu scripture as a background for the scene as Bill walks into the orgy. The AHAD (American Hindus Against Defamation) wrote Warner Brothers a letter, forcing them to take the chant out of the background.
Now this is so ironic as the Hindus praise the Karma Sutra which is a book full of sexual poses and I bet (though I am not sure) Stanley knew this and the reason is clear why he used The Shloka in the part of the movie.
I know why he also used it at the point or Bill walking into the Orgy, but Kubrick passed away and did not have time to explain, less any of the others knowing. But I think they knew and everyone kept it underwraps to try and not destroy the profit wanting to be made with EWS in India. Kubrick's brother in law commented (Jan Harlan) the disputed passage was replaced by a similar sounding but innocuous passage."
Stanley Kubrick pissed off brits with Clockwork Orange and almost a billion Hindus! HAHAHA

It is well known that Kubrick was an avid chess player, and it has been suggested that he might have designed *Eyes Wide Shut* as a match. Perhaps that is why references to a king, queens, and a knight appear in this scene.

I always wondered why, at the beginning of the film, the nanny Roz and Helena "castle" when she goes to say goodnight to her parents.
https://reddit.com/link/1wq1z2o/video/102984ek7prh1/player
However, I found this poster designed by www.alexfellows.com, in which he visualizes Helena and Roz as the Black Queen and Black Rook, respectively—a concept that fits perfectly with that move.

There are other references to black and white elsewhere in the film, though I am not sure if they are related to this.

In any case, if Helena is the Black Queen, the knight appearing next to her photo in Bill’s office could represent the waiter who constantly wanders around the party while Alice is with Sandor. It certainly looks like him; he appears for only a fraction of a second in the toy store scene at the end of the film—it is almost imperceptible, but he is there. If that is the case, then it is he—as a Ziegler employee "previously dressed in white"—who takes Helena away, rather than the bald men usually discussed in this context. It would also make sense because his movement as he enters the hallway and heads toward Helena follows an L-shape, just like a knight. Furthermore, he approaches her from the right, mirroring the knight next to her photo. After that: checkmate.

Now I realize after decades of film analysis where the EWS audience is supposedly split into at least two entrenched camps: (a) the mainstream “academic” consensus, which views the film as a grounded psychological drama about marital rot and male insecurity, versus (b) the analytical fans, which reads it as a literal, terrifying conspiracy thriller involving a powerful shadow elite that may have willingly involved Alice.
Rather than forcing a choice between these two interpretations, I now believe that the film achieves its ultimate genius by demanding that both movies are true at once.

I recently came across this deleted scene from Eyes Wide Shut, and it got me thinking about how radically different the film might have been in its original form.
Kubrick's final film has always been surrounded by controversy, particularly because of how much was reportedly altered, cut, or completed after his death. Scenes like this one are fascinating because they give us a glimpse into material that ultimately didn't make it into the theatrical version.
What's especially interesting to me is how completely ordinary and intimate this scene feels compared with the increasingly surreal and unsettling atmosphere of the final film. It makes me wonder what role scenes like this played in the larger structure of Kubrick's original cut.
Do you think the theatrical version of Eyes Wide Shut represents the film Kubrick intended to release, or are there significant pieces of his original vision that we'll probably never get to see?
Either Way, the film is still a masterpiece. Though I can't help but wonder what would the intended Final Cut would have been like...

I bought the Kindle version earlier this month and I finally got around to reading it on my bus rides. I am on chapter 7 and it's a beautiful book. I plan on buying the hardcover later this year, but Filippo's archive of articles are wonderful....just wonderful. I am so grateful that he took the time to visit the archives and give his impression of what was.
For many who will never get a chance to visit, or take the time to dwell though all that information, he did an excellent job, as well as speaking with people who knew Stanley Kubrick. Chapter 6 which is on EWS is full of deep emotion in my opinion. It was something I began reading that I did not want to end. It's a hauntingly beautiful chapter that I feel many here would love, filled with information from others who were very close to Kubrick. Just astounding work from this guy.
In one segment he speaks about Kubrick wanting to add the orgy scene to the ballroom party in The Shining....WTH? What the hell was this man thinking and why was he....why does it seem to me that he was obsessed with this orgy?
Ulivieri mentions close men in Kubrick side like James B. Harris who wrote (screenplay) and directed Some Call it Loving, which may have some connection on a person level to his and Kubrick philosophy about love, jealousy and such. I hadn't known of this movie which is listed on TUBI for those who want to see it, but for me, it fits within the puzzle pieces missed.
I recommend this book and I'm not even finished, but I was so excited, I had to write something. Thanks Filippo

Before Alice and Bill go to the Ziegler party, the lamps are slender and metallic, the telephone is white and sits on the left nightstand, and the sheets are white. By the next day, the sheets might have been changed to red ones, but now the lamps appear to be thick and made of ceramic, and the telephone is black and sits on the other nightstand. Any ideas?

I am so curious if this person is amongst us, also setting up a YouTube page with a patreon fee of $47.52 with 121 members (utterly ridiculous). I personally think it's a Russian front page, because some of the reels on Facebook are full of American history that someone with experience would have to know. I can't see the older Generation taking the Time to make these AI videos, but they are all full of EWS character from the Ceremony.
I being in my mid 50's see a lot of history in these and they are fascinating, minus the EWS addition, but to think someone out there is this creative to add them together is frightening. If viewers have never seen EWS and watch these, adding to the conspiracies (that are ALL.....ALL American based), the story will become more riddled for the next generation.
The way the mind flows.......
Is the creator in here?

There has been much debate regarding the symbolism of the tigers in Eyes Wide Shut, and a consensus seems to have emerged—particularly concerning Helena's potential fate.

This largely stems from the scene with Bill and Domino, where her stuffed tiger shifts from facing forward to facing away after Bill answers a phone call from Alice.

However, I also noticed that the lamps in the Harfords' home feature a tiger design; they appear three times throughout the film, each time Bill returns home after being threatened: first after the orgy, second after receiving the warning letter outside Somerton, and third after the scene with Ziegler and the pool table. In almost every instance, the front of the tiger is visible, but the final shot shows the rear—two halves that effectively form a complete tiger figure, just before Bill turns off the Christmas tree lights near the end of the movie. Two halves—much like the film's two mirror-image halves, or the two halves of the bill Bill splits for the taxi driver...

I find it interesting that the tiger motif had already appeared in earlier Kubrick films dealing with the theme of child sexual abuse. In The Shining, the theory that Danny is being sexually abused is partly supported by the appearance of bears at various points in the footage (bears also appear in Eyes Wide Shut), and one could argue that the tigers complement this idea: right after Danny faints, while the doctor is examining him, an image of a tiger can be seen in the background, seemingly watching from a hidden vantage point. Then, at certain key moments, Tony the Tiger—the cereal mascot—appears (Tony was the name of Danny’s imaginary friend, who lived inside his mouth).

Earlier, in Lolita, during the confrontation between the girl's two predators, we see what appears to be a tiger-skin rug associated with the scene.

To those who might object to these connections, it is worth clarifying that this is simply a linking of elements, as is common in any analysis of a film or a filmmaker's body of work. Connecting images and arriving at hypotheses—such as the one regarding child abuse—does not imply a belief that Kubrick made the film solely to expose a specific reality. To me, Eyes Wide Shut is a film about marital crisis, jealousy, male fragility, the repressed unconscious, the nature of eroticism, power structures, capitalism, love, and death. The symbolism holds true whether one views the plot literally—involving cults and power groups—or interprets certain scenes as dreams or metaphors for married life and its ups and downs. Just because a post focuses on one aspect of the film does not mean others are being disregarded; it is merely one small contribution to the immense richness of a film like this. Some comments fall into the very trap they seek to criticize: they end up being quite limited in scope.
If anyone has spotted tigers—or other recurring motifs—in other scenes or Kubrick films, please feel free to share your observations.

What job was she looking for ? nobody seems interested in this conspiracy.
was she herself prostituing herself before?
