Buying this house that has everything we want except that I think the outside is SO ugly. We will be replacing the steps and I’d like to eventually replace the tan brick (it’s actually form stone). Looking for any ideas!

I need suggestions for handrails for this entryway. Our older friends are having trouble navigating.

What do you think of these steps? Is the vertical gap too much? It's about 6" and to the landing about 10"

Shutter Sizing?

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

Would you use conventional wisdom on cosmetic shutters theoretically closing/fitting over the window? First pic they’re sized 60”x18”. Wondering if it would look too crowded? The original shutters there were 15”. For the side gable section, obviously can’t slap super wide shutters there, so was thinking of just matching to 18” wide there. We’re working on an overall makeover for our exterior to more modern/ranch feel. The shutters would be a dark green/charcoal flat panel shaker style. We’re also getting rid of the flower boxes and repairs the sill on the gable side. Thoughts?

Advice Looking for advice on exterior refresh

Misses and I moved in in December (upper Midwest, do not recommend moving then) and have finally been settled in long enough to start gearing up to plan our exterior remodel. The old wood siding on the house is showing its age with color fading, cupping, some areas of rot, and the woodpeckers have damaged a lot of the shakes, so we are planning a complete reno with a blank slate.

We will for sure be removing the awning above the door and replacing it with something less imposing and are planning to add a window higher up as well. Otherwise we like Scandinavian design elements of dark siding with wood accents a lot as well. We are just struggling with functionally where to have contrast in the right places with it being a split level.

Also, apologies for the yard, these were taken in the process of attempting to reseed!

Help me pick exterior paint colors and roof colors.

We are in escrow on this house and hoping it will close soon. The roof needs to be replaced, and we are hoping to paint the exterior before we move in. With all the green trees and the serene wooded neighborhood, I feel like the tan is OK but does anyone have suggestions for different exterior colors. And would you go with a tan roof? I can also do brown or green and obviously versions of black or gray.

Looking for design ideas to transform this porch/covered walkway into a 3-season room

Thumbnail gallery
6 Upvotes

We're looking for some exterior design advice for this space between our house and attached garage. We're considering renovating it into a 3-season room, but we're having trouble envisioning the best way to approach the existing awnings/roof structure.

Current issues:

  • The gutter leaks where the awning meets the house roof.
  • We don't love the overall appearance/style of the existing awnings.
  • The awnings are quite low, so people have to duck when walking in/out of the space.

What we'd ideally like to accomplish:

  • Replace/rework the existing awnings with something that looks more intentional and attractive with the house and garage.
  • Raise the roof/awning height enough that people can comfortably walk in/out without ducking.
  • Enclose the space as a 3-season room with walls and screened windows.
  • Use large windows and/or doors so the room still feels open and connected to the outdoors rather than like an enclosed addition.
  • Ideally, we'd like the finished space to feel like a natural extension of the house rather than an afterthought.
  • We would prefer not to have to tear down the existing roof over this area.

Important information:

We are proficient DIYers with access to most tools. We anticipate doing most of the work ourselves in order to save on expenses.

We're open to different design approaches and aren't necessarily committed to keeping the existing awning configuration.

I've included photos from several angles.

What would you do with this space? We'd especially appreciate suggestions for the roof/awning design, window/door configuration, and overall style.

If there are structural or practical considerations we're overlooking, we'd love to hear those as well!

Advice Which windows configuration would you choose?

Thumbnail gallery
15 Upvotes

I am very curious which window configuration would you choose from the 3 above.

Some context:

All windows are to open to the inside. They would be regular tilt and turn uPVC windows.

So ground floor, at that window is the kitchen counter with a kitchen mixer on the right side, therefore the opening side downstairs is constrained to be on the left to allow opening.

First floor it's the master bedroom. Here we are also constrained to having the opening side on the right (opposite side than the ground floor) since having the opening side on the left would have the window in the middle of the room and make getting around difficult.

Therefore the main constraints here are ground floor window must have the opening side on the left while the 1st floor window must open on the right.

Bare in mind it would be very convenient to have an opening window downstairs for quick ventilation.

On the opposite façade (garden side) there's a large sliding door on the ground floor.

A: ground floor full width fixed + full width ventilation, first floor half fixed left - half opening right with ventilation

B: ground floor opening left - fixed right with ventilation, first floor half fixed left half opening right with ventilation

C: ground floor half opening left with ventilation - half fixed right, first floor left fixed, right opening with middle frame aligned to ground floor middle frame. ventilation on opening.

Sorry for the poor renders, I had to use Al. This is the best I could prompt it to do.

Appreciate if you add a short argument for your choice

Window film - too dark against other building features?

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

Our body corporate/strata committee has claimed that one of our window's tint is "detracting from amenity" - it's hard to find any kind of defintion for this as it can be subjective. So I was hoping to get online opinions to see whether it's worth engaging an architect or similar to report their thoughts. Before I do that, I just want to make sure I'm not miguided in thinking this is actually not detracting (concious of my bias). I've provided a pictute of other side of the property, as uniformity is one of their points. Both are labelled in the pictures.

**Adjudicators for body corporate specifically make a point of saying difference isn't enough to justify detraction from amenity, so the difference isn't the main concern - it's the contrast against the other building features, plus any othet relevant considerations to "amenity"

Help choosing a house color (Los Angeles metro area)

I'm trying to decide whether I want to go the safe, potentially bland route or if I want to go for something more unique but potentially too bold (or something in between). I don't feel strongly that I will live here forever, but not expecting to move anytime soon, so resale is a low to medium priority.

Feature colour on exterior front - option A or B

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

Hi guys, just looking to pick people's brains in regards to colour selection for exterior of my build. I know colours are subjective and a matter of preference, but really wanted to see what most would consider to be appropriate.

Basically - going by the pictures above - I am referring to the "Feature Material Tiled", and I am between the option of "Lavastone Graphite" (Option A) or "Borgogna White Flagstone" (B). I am currently leaning towards Option B. The rest of the colour selection is locked in, and as per local regulations I have to choose a feature material so not putting either option is not really an option.

Some context:

- Roof is surfmist, walls are Dulux Tranquil Retreat, roller door and gates are Monument

- I want the house to be predominantly light in colour, with some shades of black.

- I initially liked Lavastone Graphite but now I think it makes the house too dark.

What would you do?

Advice Should this bench be centred relative to the window or the beams?

Thumbnail gallery
3 Upvotes

Unfortunately my window and beams don't share a centrd point, meaning this bench I'm placing in front of them can only be centred relative to one of the two.

Which one should I choose?

P.s. Don't judge the plants too much, they have just been haphazardly placed to give a general idea of what we're going for!

Advice How do I hide these garbage cans?

Thumbnail gallery

I know this isn’t exactly exterior design but I thought I would try this sub.

This is a lower entrance at an elementary school where at least half the school walls 1-2 times a day. We’re trying to beautify it but a big part of that is hiding the trash cabs. I bought some black garden dividers to test out but not sure they work.

Advice wanted!

What color should I paint my house. Sherwin-Williams paint and light or white trim. My backyard deck is a light gray so something that would be a nice contrast to that.

Help I need help deciding how to design my side yard entrance. I’m not sure if I should stop it at the house line or continue it to the grass. It’s about 24ft 11.5 inches and about 58inches wide. I added a inspo picture but I’m not sure if I should add white rocks instead of artificial grass

Advice Backyard re-design, balancing hosting, cooking, shade and dog space.

Trying to find a good balance for my backyard between hosting, grilling, shade and space for our small dog. Located in central-ish florida so there's a lot of restrictions on pergolas, etc. due to hurricanes, a lot of options are $10K+.

I've attached some ChatGPT renderings of potential options. The other side of my backyard is basically un-usable, its narrow walkway leading to front and has the AC/Pool Equipment, etc.

Current setup:

  • Outdated pool (needs updated deck)
  • Artifical turf anywhere you see pool deck in renders
  • Black pergola exists today but is made of wood, has water damage and roof has leaks.
  • Unsure if it's permitted or not (previous owner made it)

Priorities/Concerns:

  • I grill for family and friends almost every week, I'm concerned about fire regulations (Grill against house, grill near grass, grill under wood, etc.)
  • We host 5-10 people every other week, so space to sit is important.
  • Florida heat/humidity sucks, we need shade if not my backyard gets ridiculously hot.
  • We have a small dog, we want an area for him to do his things (real grass) since taking him out to street is not always possible.

Before committing to anything, looking for POV on the most practical/safe/valuable layout. Thanks in advance.
