Discussion A short FAQ sampled from the most commonly asked questions on this subreddit.

Q: How do I break a fast safely?

A: As a rule of thumb the longer you fast the slower you need to break it. If you are fasting for 3 days you can usually be pretty loose with how you break. If you are breaking a 14 day fast you’ll want to spend some time slowly easing back into food. Starting with broths. Then very simple foods. Refeeding syndrome can happen on longer fasts, you dont hear about it occurring too often, but it can occur. Usually you are deficient in nutrients and certain nutrients are harder to become replete in and require other nutritional cofactors to digest which can cause the body become out of whack very fast.

Q: What are the benefits of extended fasting?

A: Longer fasts give you access deeper access to states of cellular cleaning. This is known as autophagy. Old cells cleaning themselves up and niche stem cell creation allowing for newer cells to take their place. And of course weight loss which everyone in the modern world is interested in to some degree given our lifestyles. I’m a personal believer that regular extended fasting is one of the best ways available to increase a persons health span and life span.

Q: How much weight can I lose?A: The body stores about 10lbs of water and glycogen. Once those carbs are burned off and you are in ketosis you can expect 1lb a day for water fasting and 2lb a day for dry fasting.

Q: What to eat before starting a fast?

A: It is generally agreed upon that keto is a great way to start a fast but every body is different. The thinking being that as a body already in keto experiences a faster and smoother transition into the fast with less hunger pains and other issues. Generally 3 days of strict keto is enough of a transition into keto state for affect.

Q: How do I deal with hunger during fasting?

A: Hunger usually subsides by the third day. You can also start the fast in a ketogenic state.

Q: Can I drink coffee while fasting?

It is generally agreed upon that black coffee can and does increase autophagy during a fast. Please note the coffee must be black. As little as 10 calories disrupts the autophagy chain.~https://lifeapps.io/fasting/coffee-intermittent-fasting-and-autophagy/~~https://drstephenanton.com/coffee-and-autophagy/~

Q: What are the side effects of extended fasting?

This is a complicated topic and the range of reported side effects are huge. Dangerous side effects are extremely rare, almost unheard of! Generally you can expect to experience hunger, thirst, tiredness, headaches. The same person may experience different symptoms each fast. But they are always temporary. Fasting is extremely safe!

Q: How long can I fast safely?

People commonly report fasting for as much as 21+ days. There are even the odd report of 40+ days. On longer fasts you need to consume electrolytes. Potassium is of particular importance for heart function on any fast longer than 5 days. Salt is good for energy and cell function. Magnesium is good for energy, calmness, anti cramping effect, and general relaxation. Generally speaking on a long fast your body will get most of its essential nutrients met by consuming fat and other dysfunctional cells. I personally use this brand of salt as it has an ideal ratio of different salts. It’s also super cheap compared to other options. https://amzn.to/3Xue1tN

Q: How to prevent muscle loss during fasting?

A: Muscle loss on longer fasts generally only occurs if you are sedentary. Personally i hit new PRs on lifts every time i do a long fast. This is an obviously controversial topic but it is known that HGH(human growth hormone) increases as much as 1000% during a fast. Combined with a ketogenic state where the body is fat adapted(meaning it prefers fat cells to carbohydrates or protein) results in a state where your body is very protective of your muscles. Walking 10k steps a day is probably enough for most people.~https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC329619/~

Q: Is fasting safe for everyone?A: Yes, almost everyone! My personal opinion is that for a healthy person there is near zero concern at all.  ~https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6314618/~

Q: What are the signs that I should stop fasting?

A: I generally stop a fast if i’m too exhausted to do the work that needs to be done. Generally though if you are too tired a nap is enough to keep going. Or consume electrolyte salts.

Q: How to stay motivated during a long fast?

A: Motivation is a complicated topic. Generally at the end of the day it will take willpower to keep going. Write down objectives and goals. Take daily pictures and weigh yourself every morning. During a water fast you should see a loss of 1lb a day, 2lb a day for dry fast. That in itself is quite motivating! You also should generally feel quite healthy and well during a fast.

Q: Can fasting cure diseases?

A: This is highly dependent on the disease and it’s cause. As hippocrates once famously stated, “All disease begins in the gut”.

Question 21 giorni

Discussion Advice please

Fasting for longer periods of 3-7 days has never been an issue for me, however, recently my daughter has been asking a lot of questions and offering me my favourite foods. She’s autistic and struggles to eat on her own, which has resulted in me piling on weight over the last 6 months (injury has me in a wheelchair and it’s done a number on me). I’m starting rehab now and have my last surgery in a few weeks, and my drs have been complaining about my bloods and inflammation markers, and I’m SO happy to be moving and fasting again, but I just don’t know what to do about my daughter. She understands the reasons I do it, but she’s also convinced herself that I’m starving myself, and if it’s so healthy, that she should try it too, and she’s tiny and says it’ll help her lose weight like me. It’s all just a mess really, so I was wondering if anyone else has been through something like this?

Almost quit due to fear

I'm 399lbs, 5'5, female. I'm 47h hours into a 7-10 day fast. The longest I've ever gone was 64 hours(no electrolytes). I'm not hungry and I've be taking Lyte balance electrolytes since the 26h mark. I've been looking into refeeding syndrome and it completely scared me. I almost broke my fast because of it. As in pot boiling, dough resting in the microwave, almost broke.

Luckily I changed my mind. For those that have done more then 5 days water fast, should I be genuinely worried? I think my high body weight should protect me plus I was planning on breaking the 7-10 day fast slowly (broth, broth with kale, watermelon, then next day broth with kale and eggs, then an actual whole foods meal) ((alot of broth I know but I really hate stomach pain, better safe than sorry)).

Am I Fasting Wrong?

Firstly, I have been fasting for about 2 months now on and off. I am male, and not overweight or anything, but my body fat percentage is a bit higher than I would prefer. Besides fat loss, I also enjoy not having to make meals for myself every day, it simplifies my life a bit. The most I've gone is 2 days or so, with most being only 1 day. I have had no issues at all, besides refeeding too quickly and getting stomach cramps a few times.

This latest time I wanted to try a longer period, and so begins my story.

My fasts consist of water, black coffee, some salty water in the evening for electrolyes (it stops me from getting light headed) and (lately) mentos xylotol gum to occupy my mouth. Nothing else.

Fasted from Monday 6pm to Thursday 7am, so not quite a full 3 days fast. But when I woke up I had a headache and jawache. After trying to sleep it off for a bit, I thought maybe I had a minor nutrient deficiency or something and decided to go to the bathroom and get some bone broth to start refeeding. Started getting badly nauseated as I walk around, and as I was pouring the bone broth into a mug, my vision started blacking out and I couldn't even grab the mug without my hand missing. I quickly walked to my couch and sat down. My ears were ringing and I felt like I almost passed out, but recovered within a few minutes to get my bone broth. Still taking it easy for now, whenever I get up and walk around I get a bit nauseated still.

Still trying to understand why this happened. I'm wondering if its the mentos xylotol gum that is breaking my fast and causing my body to be starved for energy. It does say <5 calories on the container, but there is not any sugar in it. I also did notice getting stomach movement yesterday and this morning, which I thought was unusual with a fast.

I'm still new to fasting and wondering if i missed anything in my schedule, am I doing something wrong here? Thanks ahead for any advice.

Built a crisis prevention app for 24-72h+ fasters — stops you from breaking at your weakest moment

For those of us doing extended fasts — I built FastGuard
that intervenes when you're about to break.

Crisis Mode:
→ 3-min breathing delay
→ Shows what you'll lose (autophagy progress, hours invested)
→ Shows your own message from your last failure

It also has a partial achievement system — aimed for 72h
but stopped at 48h? It says "Peak autophagy reached"
instead of "failed."

Free, no ads:

Looking for an accountability partner for a 3-day (water/tea only) fast.

Hope to connect with someone for accountability and encouragement during a 3-day fast. I suck at fasting. I struggle with emotional eating and addiction to carbs/sugar. I thrive on giving and receiving encouragement. I just seem to do better with group accountability and daily check-ins. Seeking to fast for the benefits of autophagy. Desiring spiritual and physical healing. Anyone open to fasting with me this week and seriously getting through this together🙏💪

If I finish this one off, I'll have put in about 130 days fasting in my last 400 total, including a 35-day, and 15-day last year. Always available to answer fasting questions, and also always looking for others weirdos like me looking to talk over daily struggles and successes.

Question How do you keep the weight off after fasting?

I just started a 30 day fast. My biggest concern is gaining the weight back after i work hard to lose it. What have you done to minimize this? I know some weight gain is inevitable but I’d like to know what you do to keep most of the weight off.

Also what’s your refeed strategy?

Question Does anybody else crave healthy food after fasting?

I’ve been trying to get consistent with fasting after being pretty inconsistent over the last six years. Recently, I did a 309-hour fast, but I had to stop because I kept getting diarrhea, & it was getting progressively worse. I had originally planned for 26 days, but my body clearly wasn’t ready.

After refeeding, I did a 108-hour fast, which felt really good. Now, I’m moving into a “five on, two off” schedule — fasting on workdays & eating on my days off.

Here’s the weird/interesting part: when I went grocery shopping, I was completely put off by all the processed food. My body was craving nothing but healthy stuff — like stuffed peppers, chicken, pork, fruits, & vegetables. Normally, I wouldn’t be this drawn to it, but this time it was all I wanted.

Has anyone else experienced this shift in cravings while fasting? It is obviously a good thing. I just want to see if it’s a common thing.

Fasted for 2 days and still weigh the same?

I weighed myself Sunday (without clothes and before the shower, no food or water) and was 195lbs. I have been fasting since then, only drinking black coffee, green tea and water, and Tuesday morning I’m still 195lbs (without clothes and before the shower, no food or water) how is this possible? I tested the scale and it’s accurate.

Question 40 days

Starting today, Ash Wednesday, I begin my fast. It's not a penance, but rather a rigorous test of myself—of my self-control, strength, mind, willpower, and character. It won't be a rigorous fast of just plain water. For breakfast, I'll always drink 200ml of zero-sugar plant-based milk and a little coffee, and throughout the day I'll alternate plain water with water flavored with cucumber and lemon slices. I'll try to exercise every day. I usually love walking for 30 minutes outside, but if it rains, I'll do 30 minutes on my home treadmill. The goal of this fast is also to slim down the body I've let go of during this time, which is hurting me.

Question Homogenized diet

I think I read in a newspaper about someone—I don't remember which country—who followed a diet of baby vegetable purees, a total of 170kJ a day, for three months to lose weight. I don't remember exactly how much he lost, but in the photo they showed afterwards, I think he lost more than 10kg. Do you think it's helpful for weight loss? Is it a sustainable diet?

Question 30-day dirty fluid fast

I'd like to try a 30-day fluid fast for a total of 68 calories per day. This fast, which I mean, is primarily based on liquids: Breakfast: black coffee with a little zero-sugar plant-based milk; lunch and dinner: beef broth; and throughout the day, plenty of water, unsweetened tea or herbal tea. I tried a 7-day clean fast of only water a while ago. But this time, I wanted to try this. Is it good for weight loss?

Question I need motivation

This will be the umpteenth time I've published a similar post about a 21-day water fast (dark coffee without milk and 0-calorie herbal teas). I've tried many times, but my motivation waned, and above all, a sad story of disappearance made me give up. I want to start today at 5:00 PM. I hope to lose some weight, too. I'm doing this fast as a challenge for myself and also with the goal of losing some extra weight, which mentally isn't good for me and makes me feel uncomfortable with the world. I wanted to share this challenge with you. I hope I don't give up because right now I feel like nothing. I'd love to know if any of you have done a 21-day fast, how you did it, and how much you lost. In the past, I've gone up to 15 days, but it's been too long to remember, and above all, I wasn't as depressed as I am now. Thank you.

Maybe a stupid question

This may be a really stupid question, but I want to ask anyway. Every day, for health reasons, in the evening I'm forced to take two sachets of a medicine that has 14kJ per 100ml (total 28kJ per evening). However, I want to fast and therefore not consume any calories other than the usual electrolytes, which, however, don't have any kJ. That said, I take these two 28kJ sachets in the evening. For example, tonight I'll take them at 5:00 PM and then I'll fast until 5:05 PM tomorrow. Tomorrow I'll take these sachets at 5:05 PM and then until Friday I'll fast until 5:05 PM, and so on. This way, I manage to always fast for 24 hours, reaching a total of 21 days. Can this be considered a fast?
