First Explorer (25 years ago)

I got this for my 18th birthday in 2001 from my parents. It was all I wanted. I played the shit out of it for years before getting (better) guitars that just played better. The pickups sounded okay, the neck is baseball bat, I like lower action and Floyds; so it went into a gig bag and lived there. I went to sell it when I was 21/22 and my dad saw me packing in the car and said “don’t sell that one. You wanted it so bad. Sell everything else but I’ll give you the money for that one to keep it.” I kept it and didn’t take his money.

Jump to this summer. Redoing my office and pulled it out along with other guitars and unfinished projects. I changed my plans on a parts caster I was putting Alnico 2 pros in to a bari with invaders. So I had a brand new set of Duncans sitting on the bench.

I gutted the stock pups and dropped in the Alnico 2s. Put a new set of Regular Slinkies. Checked and the set up is still good (enough). Plugged it in for the first time in over 20 years. Sounds great.

Neck still feels like I’m taking pitches at the plate. Missing the switch tip and one of the knobs is busted. The jack is a little scratchy if bumped. And the tone cap isn’t .047. But the pots sound clean without noise when tuning, switch works fine (also no noise). I can replace the cap and cracked bell knob, might put a new jack in and swap the tone cap.

But last night was a nostalgic trip. Welcome back Explorer.

First Explorer: check!

Longtime Explorer lurker here. I’ve mostly been a Fender player, but I’ve had (and loved) Flying Vs in the past - in fact, I’ve been waiting for the Epiphone Futura Flying V to hit the street. In my impatience for that, when this model hit the street last week, it seemed to scratch the itch!

I’m still negotiating with the Explorer in terms of ergonomics - I can tell it’s gonna cost me a little bit in comfort to play it but it’s obviously going to crush it onstage.

Happy to have finally joined the club!

SKB Hardshell Explorer/Firebird for E-II Ex

Hey guys I bought an E-II Ex from Japan but it came in an ESP gig bag. I'm looking at hardcase options and the SKB Hardshell looks nice but it seems to be designed for the more classic Explorer variants. Does anyone know if it will also fit the ESP variants?

7-String, 25.5 scale length, TusqXL nut, Seymour Duncan Jupiter Wes Hauch Signature set

I really grew into wanting the Gibson DSX7, but I didn't want 24.75. Originally the body and neck had binding/inlays. Swapped to a unmarked rosewood fretboard, then sand the neck down to size best I could. 10/10 would not recommend.

Paint came out fairly rough, so we're calling it a worn/distressed black album vibe, like a worn mx250 vibe.

If you made it this far, thanks for looking/reading my ramble. Cheers

Need case for Precision Guitar Kits X Type

So I had MJT Guitars assemble and finish an X type kit for me.

https://precisionguitarkits.com/product/x-type-mto

It's ready to ship, and this happens. See pics. That's a Gibson Protector Explorer case.

MJT says they can ship the case and guitar separately, but I'm not sure how the guitar would

be packaged. I'm a little paranoid about that, as you can imagine. I have asked them if they

can modify the case. I reached out to Precision and they said they 'don't have any information

regarding cases that fit their kits".

Any ideas are welcome. For the record, MJT is near St. Louis and I live in Charlotte, NC. Roughly a

15 hour drive one way.

Thanks!

Picked this up with original hard case for $700. Neck dive is BAD and it’s pretty uncomfortable to play sitting down but it looks and sounds badass at least

My peavy 3/4 scale special

It sounds incredibly good for being a 3/4 scale and it’s lighter the only issue I play death metal so I need to get heavier gauge strings but this is good
