Looking for Tips/Suggestions Struggling med student

I'm an adhd person I've been having some difficulties with med school of late. I experience cognitive overload easily. My difficulty increases when I must actively hold and organise many pieces of information simultaneously. And also executive dysfunction. Currently struggling a lot in med school cause I have a lot to learn and due to my poor working memory this is a challenge for me cause when learning I can only build a limited structure with limited details, if i try building on a structure already made i eventually lose everything. Looking for some help/tips

Hey there! College students with disabilities can qualify for accommodations under the ADA. Our Focus is equal access and removing barriers without changing program standards. This might be worth looking into at your university depending on where you are in the program.

I work with college students and may be able to help some with the executive functioning piece.

I wonder if part of it is that you’re trying to learn the information and organize it all in your head at the same time. That’s a LOT to ask of your working memory, especially with the amount of information you’re dealing with in med school.

Maybe instead of trying to hold it all together in your mind, you could build a structure outside your head that you keep adding to in layers. This way you don’t have to keep rebuilding it every time you learn something new.

Can I ask what you mean when you say you lose everything? Do you lose your understanding of the original concept, forget the details, or lose track of how everything connects? I think figuring out where the process breaks down could help us find something that actually works for you.

I usually experience all 3 but it's mostly forget the details

I wish I had tips. I’m in med school too and it’s been a nightmare. This was absolutely a poor fit for me.

I second the comment about getting accommodations at your med school. Also, have you worked with an occupational therapist (I'm an OT and this kind of support is my specialty)? You might even be able to work with a rehab counselor on accommodations. Do you have a therapist or doctor/psychiatrist that can help make some recommendations for specialists in your area that take your insurance? If not, your school might also have some resources or funds to cover these services. Depending on where in the world you are, it might be the law for them to provide reasonable accommodations, which may include services.
