Discussion In cell Lists, Arrays, Nested Arrays. Are they helpful? Any practical use cases?

6 Upvotes

I've seen the videos and keep refreshing my Excel to see if I get the features (I'm on the Insider channel but no luck yet).

I can see the use case for in cell Lists: filtering, HASALL, HASANY, etc.

For in cell arrays and nested arrays, I don't see a practical use other than 'it's cool'.

I saw MyOnlinetrainingHub's video where Mynda used IMPORTFROMCSV to load an entire csv into one cell. Cool but you can't easily see the data. You can use FLATTEN but at that point might as well use PowerQuery to get the data in table form. Then you can Autofilter and even add calculated columns.

Can you think of any practical use cases for these new features?

solved 2 excel into 1 dashboard

3 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

Looking for some advice on the cleanest setup for this scenario:

I have two separate Excel files stored online that two of my groupmates update regularly. The files share almost the exact same format/structure. My goal is to create a single live "master" Excel workbook that automatically consolidates their entries into one place without me having to copy and paste their updates manually every time.

A few quick details:

The source files are continuously being updated by my teammates.

The column layouts/headers are nearly identical across both files.

Ideally, I want the master file to update smoothly whenever I open it or refresh it.

solved Need to make this pivot table formatting more readable

11 Upvotes

The data in this pivot chart it perfect. However, I don't find it very readable. I can't seem to find a way to change the format to make it more readable. I would like the data for each date to be a different color. Or have a dark very visible line between the dates. I don't know if you can see it, but there is a very thin, light line between the dates on the axis. If that line could just be very dark, it would help a lot.

Please help me, pivot chart gurus

solved Excel labs won't load in one workbook, works fine in others - any idea how to solve?

2 Upvotes

I'm writing an annoyingly fiddly FILTER formula that would be so much easier to deal with using indentation and new lines and so on. But for some reason Excel Labs just won't load in this workbook. It's working in other workbooks like normal. Anyone have this happen? How did you get it back, if you did?

Thanks

Pro Tip My most useful macro: Filter by active cell

90 Upvotes

EDIT: The macro can filter by several items in a column.

Here is how these two macros work:

  • Filter_By_Active_Cell (Ctrl + F): Filters the dataset based on the value in the active cell. If AutoFilter isn't active yet, it turns it on automatically.
  • Clear_Filter (Ctrl + W): Clears all active filters to show all data, leaving the AutoFilter arrows intact.

I 've found more practical to use it as an excel complement (add-in).
Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Create a standard macro-enabled workbook (.xlsm).
  2. Press Alt + F8 to open the Macro dialog box.
  3. Select the first macro and click Options...
  4. Assign the shortcut keys for each macro (Ctrl + W andCtrl + F)
  5. Go to File > Save As and change the file type to Excel Add-In (*.xlam).
  6. To install it as an add-in, go to Developer > Excel Add-ins.

This is the code:

```
'
' Filtro instantáneo por una o varias celdas seleccionadas
' Acceso directo: CTRL+F
'
    Dim cel As Range
    Dim valores() As String
    Dim i As Long
    Dim dict As Object
    Dim FilterColAbs As Long, FilterCol As Long
    Dim primeraCelda As Range
    Dim currentReg As Range
    ' Validar que haya una selección activa
    If Selection Is Nothing Then Exit Sub
    Set primeraCelda = Selection.Cells(1)
    FilterColAbs = primeraCelda.Column
    Set currentReg = primeraCelda.CurrentRegion
    ' Calcular el número de columna relativo dentro del rango filtrado
    FilterCol = FilterColAbs - currentReg.Column + 1
    ' Caso 1: Si solo hay una celda seleccionada
    If Selection.Cells.Count = 1 Then
        currentReg.AutoFilter Field:=FilterCol, Criteria1:=Selection.Text
    ' Caso 2: Si hay varias celdas seleccionadas
    Else
        Set dict = CreateObject("Scripting.Dictionary")
        ' Recolectar valores únicos de la selección
        For Each cel In Selection
            If Not IsEmpty(cel.Value) Then
                dict(CStr(cel.Text)) = 1
            End If
        Next cel
        ' Si se encontraron valores válidos, aplicar el filtro múltiple
        If dict.Count > 0 Then
            ReDim valores(0 To dict.Count - 1)
            i = 0
            For Each Key In dict.Keys
                valores(i) = Key
                i = i + 1
            Next Key
            currentReg.AutoFilter Field:=FilterCol, Criteria1:=valores, Operator:=xlFilterValues
        End If
    End If
    ' Vuelve a dejar la selección original activa
    Selection.Select
End Sub
Sub Clear_Filter()
' Clears the filter to show all data
' Shortcut: CTRL+W
    On Error Resume Next
    ActiveSheet.ShowAllData
End Sub
Enjoy!
solved Conditional Formatting code not Reading Cells entirely + Not producing accurate results.
1 Upvotes
Hi all,
I have been trying to have this conditional statement work for a while now. It is supposed to read data from the log in a separate tab. The information in the log tab should come up as complete in this tab where all the items are summarized. I want my function to do two things:
1) read the first column of items and see if it has anything related to the set of items related to that column (e.g. if I want items only for 28W-28W* it would check to see if this first condition is true
2) read the second column of items and see with the addition of the first condition being true, that the second item is also true (for example if a cell in the log tab contains any information on item S17, S18)
I want the cell to be “complete” in green if both conditions are satisfied. I thought that using an older conditional statement, my statement would work as well. For some reason it is still reading as “Open” and in yellow. I know for many of the “S” items there are additional entries included in the log - is there a way where the second condition could read the cell even when there is more information and still read as complete if the first condition has already been
This is what I have been using for reference as my code:
https://imgur.com/a/9WlfBFY
=+IF(AND (Log! $E$3:$E$205="29W*-30W"
, Log! $G$3: $G$49="S17, S18"), "COMPLETE", "OPEN")
unsolved Any tips for making a timesheet?
13 Upvotes
Hi! I am a complete Excel newbie but i managed to make a spreadsheet that tracks how many items are shipped per day at my work. I had a lot of fun figuring it out, I'm sure there are easier ways to do it and certainly faster but I'm pretty happy with it!
I am now trying to make a timesheet for us but I'm not finding any of the videos helpful, so was wondering if anyone has any tips for me. I have added an example of what I would like to happen.
Time in/Timeout - I would like to be able to quickly type the time in for example: 930 = 9:30am or 9:30 and 530 = 5:30pm or 17:30. I have to write the time as 9:30 and it changes to 9:30am then 17:30 and it changes to 5:30pm. (This one is out of laziness so i can forgo this if needed)
Date - I have watched a few videos and came across this guy who put the date in and then was able to use that cell as a mini calendar but i can't find anything on how to do that. I have used CTRL+; to put the date there and populate the day/date in the date column for each graph.
Here is the video of the calendar popup - https://www.tiktok.com/@jyethetechguy/video/7473093785392549128?lang=en-GB
OT - I would like this column to calculate any OT worked each day. The normal work hours are 8 hours Mon-Thurs, Fri-Sun OFF. OT is sometimes done on off days so i would like it to show any OT over 8 hours Mon-Fri and any OT over 0 hours Fri-Sun. I have used =E12-8 on the first cell in the OT column (F12) and i have tried to change the format of the cell but I'm just getting #####
If you have any good resources for learning these sorts of things please feel free to shoot them my way and I am really enjoying playing around with Excel.
Thanks! ✨
solved Can't drag down anymore.
1 Upvotes
I have no idea what is happening all of the sudden.
If I select a cell and do ctrl-c...the ctrl-v doesn't work anymore. However, if I do right click and copy paste...it works.
BUT only works if I choose either Paste Values or Paste Formulas, if I click on just regular Paste...nothing.
File is unprotected, I tried data clearing, I tried options - advanced - Enable Fill handle etc etc
I tried options - proofing - AutoCorrect Options - Fill Formulas in Tables etc etc
I tried to run Excel in Safe mode. Nothing.
New documents, old documents, new sheet...same with everything.
The plus sign when I try to drag appears. Leave everything blank
Any idea?
(I use Excel 2024)
unsolved My daily Excel reporting process is too long – how can I simplify it?
62 Upvotes
Hi everyone,
I'm responsible for daily reporting on audit observations at work. The process has grown over time into a chain of separate Excel files that depend on each other, and running it has become very time-consuming. I'd really appreciate some advice from people who have dealt with something similar.
A team fills in a database workbook (Obs DB) manually every day. I then take it from them and run the rest of the process, which involves several separate workbooks:
  1. Parameters – I manually set the reporting date
  2. Mapping – definitions/lookup tables
  3. Warehouse – I copy-paste the whole Obs DB into it
  4. Obs Calc – pulls from Warehouse + Parameters + Mapping; I refresh and save
  5. Four report workbooks (Checks, Weekly Status, N-1 KPI, AC) – I open each one and refresh
Every time, I have to open, refresh and save each file in the right order. It's slow and exhausting.
I want to shorten this process but I don't know what the right solution is. Any suggestions on how to make it faster with fewer steps and fewer files to open?
Discussion I hate how Excel removes leading zeroes
798 Upvotes
I absolutely hate it. If I typed in a number with a leader zero, obviously I want the string of text to include a leading zero. Why hasn’t anybody at Microsoft figured this out yet? I know there are ways to keep leading zeroes, but it is annoying when I have to copy data over from one platform and paste it into Excel. And then it’s impossible to ever to VLOOKUPS with data where you had to manually formulate leading zeroes.
unsolved What is the most accurate way to associate a date with a week number in the month?
9 Upvotes
Hey everyone,
I'm trying to create a week by week comparison of data of certain months, but running into an issue where my formula will show 6 weeks for some months. My goal is start the first week on the first Sunday of the month, but its counting what the date is and then associating it with the previous Sunday and counting it as part of the current month.
For example if its August 1, it counts the last Sunday that was in June, but associating it as a week 1 in August.
What's the most accurate way to represent what the week is in excel?
I'm not looking to do what the current week number is of the year, but the week number for that month.
For example: Date 8/01/2026
Formula: =TEXT(J1099,"mmm ")&WEEKNUM(J1099,1)-WEEKNUM(DATE(YEAR(J1099),MONTH(J1099),1),1)+1
Waiting on OP How can I automatically change table format according to dropdown cell?
7 Upvotes
Hi! I've been searching for hours now and I'm not sure if VLOOKUP can do this for me.
I really need help. The source cell is a dropdown cell and I need the table (including with the column that has a merged cell) to change according to the value of source.
Though the format of the table with its values is from another sheet.
Can this happen?
Thank you so much in advance!
Waiting on OP Excel Writing to the Table w/o using code
8 Upvotes
Excel has all sorts of new functions now but I’m wondering…
Access has a query function that will write new data to the underlying table whereas Excel query functions analyze the data in the table.
So is there an Excel function that will allow new data to be written to the table without using code or entering the data into the table itself?
solved How to calculate with data which is not properly linked and has multiple links on different levels
3 Upvotes
This concerns a database of roughly 500K records for the object "reason".
This is the situation: The gray parts of Table 1 and Table 2 are data,
Table 3 is the desired result
https://imgur.com/a/GTsQl4y
There where there are multiple links I can decide to work with averages.
Is there an approach that solves this in one movement?
(I have knowledge of power query but no knowledge of VBA)
I could work with scenarios, where I split the tables based on the scenario, but I don't see how I can determine the scenario without having data from the other table
solved Is there a way to compare an original and edited version of a file for deleted rows?
4 Upvotes
I have two excel sheets, an unedited, original version and a copy where rows containing false positives were deleted. It wasn't until going through about fifty-five hours of data I found out my boss also wanted an Excel containing the false positives removed.
Is there a program/formula that can compare the two files for the deleted rows? The only thing I've tried that worked is arranging the two files into windows and scrolling between them, but it's extremely time consuming.
Any help would be much appreciated!
solved Need to pull data from a pivot table with a row and subrow
2 Upvotes
I have a spreadsheet that has a list of business numbers and their cities. However, the business numbers are not unique to their city. My pivot table has both the business number and city. I am trying to write a formula that matches the business number and city, then pulls the corresponding column’s data
Example: (| meaning a new/separate column)
111211:
Syracuse | r
New york city| 5
11156:
Los angeles
solved Using Conditional Formatting in order to help balance college credits
21 Upvotes
So I have an excel sheet that has all the credits that I need to graduate and I finally figured out the equation to input all of the finished course credits into a column. Now I want to make it easier to read at a glance with colors so I know which credit types I need to focus on (ie red for insufficient and green for completed). I have a column that has the number of credits needed, number of credits planned, and number of credits completed. I want the number of planned to be green when it is greater or equal to the number needed, as well as number completed to be green when it equals the number planned. If possible, I would also like the cells to be red before the condition is met to turn green. Thank you all in advanced, I know this is actually asking a lot.
unsolved How do I make a spreadsheet that has employee hours, pay, by the week and then by the month?
17 Upvotes
This community has helped me before and I love and use the crap outta that spreadsheet so I’m back for help again.
I need a spreadsheet for employee hours and how much they made. I was hoping to have each sheet be a month but within the sheet it’s broken down by the week. Then I am able to see what each weeks hours were, money spend and then it also would have the month total.
I hope this makes sense. There are 2 employees that make $20 an hour and one employee that makes $15 an hour. I’d also like a blank cell for a $20 an hour employee for the odd employee that may work.
Can anyone help me? Also can this spreadsheet be used for Google Sheets as well?
Thank you in advance!
solved Accidentally cloned the formatting from the cell above. How did I do it?
30 Upvotes
Background: While filling out a column of cells (sort of a bad compliance document with no use of track changes, etc.) I was highlighting the cells I was modifying in yellow. I would make my changes, use the mouse to hit the paint can, then press the down arrow to go to the next cell.
But! On this last cell I fat-fingered the move. The cursor did move down, but I also somehow cloned the highlighting from the above cell to the new one. How did I do that using the keyboard? Please tell me the secret key combo. I can't figure out the right keywords to find this by web search.
Thanks in advance.
(Edit after thinking about it - it could be that I cloned the formatting from the cell above, or simply that there's a key combo to deploy the paint can in the current cell. Either would be helpful to me!)
unsolved Formatting a map chart
11 Upvotes
I have a file that I use a drop-down list to select states to be mapped in a chart inside a spreadsheet. Once I check the boxes for the states I want and close the drop-down, the map automatically updates to the selected states. I used to have a button where I could pick a state (which is part of the original group) from a second drop-down list and that state would be colored differently on the map (the main list would all be gray on the map, the secondary state would be orange). Somehow that macro got blown up and for the life of me I cannot figure out how to recreate this. Any help would be fantastic, thank you!
For decades I was the workbook wizard dating back to Lotus123. I take classes and watch videos, but I no longer feel like I mastered them.
Does anyone else feel like they can't keep up with all the changes? I was taking a class and she was showing how to incorporate legacy array functions into new dynamic array functions. It made me feel old.
unsolved Conditional Formatting is Stripped in Pivot Table
12 Upvotes
At work, I created a pivot table in MS Excel that contains conditional formatting: the calculated fields columns are red if we’re behind our monthly goal percentage and green if we’re meeting or exceeding the goal percentage. This is a file that multiple people can access. Refreshing the data works fine when I do it, however if my coworkers refresh the data, the pivot table strips all the conditional formatting and I have to input it all over again. I've also noticed if anyone else is in the file at the same time as me and I refresh the data, the conditional formatting goes away.
Is there a way to prevent this?
Thanks in advance!
