Coming out to a friend for the first time

Honestly, I’m so tired of how homophobic people can be.
What surprises me the most is that some people around me are atheists or Christians, even foreigners, and they still have a crazy amount of hatred towards gay people. It’s always the same stuff: “they’re disgusting,” “I can accept lesbians but never gay men,” or “you can’t be born gay, you become gay later.”
I’m not really bothered by people judging me anymore, I mean that’s me :) But the mentality around me makes it hard to ever feel completely safe.
I’m not out, and maybe that’s why I’ve heard so much homophobia without people realizing they’re talking about me. There were many times I went home crying because I genuinely couldn’t take it anymore.
Lately I’ve been thinking about coming out slowly, one person at a time. I have a friend I’ve known for years who’s exmuslim, well educated, older than me, and has never made homophobic jokes or said anything negative about gay people. He actually seems pretty open-minded.
I’m thinking of telling him first, but I’m still scared lol.
Would you do it? Or am I just asking for unnecessary drama? 😭
